Proofide is a great product to condition and protect your brooks saddle. It quickly melts with just the heat of your finger, and is quickly absorbed into the underside of the saddle, softening the leather and providing a degree of splash protection.
Unfortunately, the ease with which the product melts to a readily absorbent liquid is also it's downfall when ordering online in the summer months. In the heat of summer transport, my tin melted completely and half leaked out of the container and soaked into the cardboard shipping box and the advertisement included in the shipment. Thankfully, the advertisement kept it from getting all over my new saddle, which was also in the box. For what this thing costs per container, to have half of it wasted was a huge disappointment!
The tin itself it not threaded, the top just slips snugly over the bottom, so once the contents become liquid, it will inevitably be leaking out. Nashbar really needs to place this in a bag before shipment to protect the other contents of the package from an oily mess. My advice: only order this during winter months.
Was this a gift?:
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
This is what Brooks recomends to protect and condition thier saddles with, so I thought I would give it a try. It does have a rather unplesant odor to me, although not repulsive. I'm also not sure it does any better job than the leather shoe potion I had used for the last 10 years on the others, but it does come in a nice tiddy tin!
