    Comments about Nashbar LDT Rack:

The bars for attaching near the seat weren't long enough. This seems to be a valid criticism of most every rack sold. My solution is usually to bend a 1" x 1/8" soft aluminum (6063) bar, about 20" long, and bolt it to the rack and, also, bolt it to the frame cross-brace just behind the seat. A custom fit is usually needed, so if a 20" long aluminum bar with 3 bolts and nuts were included with the rack instead of what usually comes with the rack, I'd be much more satisfied. People who are mechanically inclined enough to install the rack themselves should have no problem bending a aluminum bar to fit. This solution is also less likely to interfere with the rear brakes.

    Comments about Nashbar LDT Rack:

As the title suggests this is an all around nice rack. Its light weight aluminum construction doesn't take away from its strength. I would be confident taking a 30 pound load any distance on this rack. I would not put a 50 pound load on it. When stressed, it seems to give more from side to side than any other direction. The only con that stands out for me is the unusual choice is fastener. During assembly, you must figure out how this fastener works, which is not immediately obvious. The instructions make no attempt to clarify how the fastener is correctly used. If not for this assembly quirk the product would be five stars out of five possible.

I've put on two of these Nashbar racks and each time it takes awhile to install them, but once on they stay tight and handle most anything you legally need to carry. Construction and manufacturing is solid.

            Comments about Nashbar LDT Rack:

I will not be keeping this item. It is smaller then I had hoped it would be. The price is ok, but if you are hanging panniers on the sides it really doesn't keep them from moving around. The bottom of the rack also has a bulky attachment system that will tear up the back side of the pannier because it is sharp metal and sticks out at least a half inch from the smooth down bars.

              Comments about Nashbar LDT Rack:

Mounting it wasn't entirely straightforward. I found it only fit inside the dropouts of my rim brake road bike. Nashbar tech support said that was fine as long as it cleared everything, which it did. My bike has no braze-ons on the seat stays so I used the clamps and my own hardware. With this set-up, if the rack isn't evenly loaded then the clamp will eventually rotate around the seat stay and the rack will twist off-center.

I've had it on the bike a couple of months and attached a pair of heavy, steel Wald 582 folding baskets, adjusting them to avoid heel strike. It is a stable setup and the weight limit is adequate for my purposes. I guess my main objection is the rack provides near zero weather protection while also preventing using clip-on fenders. Perhaps if it were longer?
