I was converting an early 80's all aluminum race bike to a much more useful commuter bike. Went with new carbon forks (Nashbar) and threadless. This made finishing off the conversion look clean and professional besides functioning exactly like a normal cap with a star nut.

This product has sufficiently replaced the former star nut configuration, which I believe is awesome. Sure it does require a bit of tinkering to get it started, but once you got it, its easy, and super strong. I am so glad I gave this a try with my recent fork replacement.

I think this thing holds tighter than a star nut. It is so easy to install, no special tools. If you are looking to replace a fork, this is the way to go.

Comments about Nashbar Expanding Fork Plug:

To the reviewer who had rattling from this, a mistake in installing was made I am sure. You tighten the expander with a 6 mm allen and you tighten the top cap with a 5 mm allen. This is one of the alluring aspects of the ingenious design. This person likely used a 5 mm to tighten the expander and never got it tight enough, easy to do. You can easily tighten this fork plug so that loosening is not an issue. If you don't plan to ever change the steerer tube length, a star nut still works well but I like the elegance of this design.

Comments about Nashbar Expanding Fork Plug:

I prefer using this over the cheap star nut on the alloy tubes as well as carbon tubes that require it because you can easily remove it later if you want to re-cut the steerer tube. It lets you cut the steerer tube long and if you find that is too much, you remove the expander plug easily and re-cut. For the time you spend playing with the forks, this is a reasonable way to not commit to a certain length steerer tube and make a change as needed. It is easier to install and does not require special tools either. Star nuts are OK but
this is the way to go for its ability to change out.

Comments about Nashbar Expanding Fork Plug:

It is possible that I did not install this correctly but it seemed like there is only one way to do it. The issue I had was that as the unit expands and compresses out on the tube, it becomes difficult for it to compress the headset compression ring down, which is essential to eliminate rattling and loose fitting of the fork. This is the entire purpose of a star nut I think; to compress your headset. Maybe this unit will work well with a different type of headset that I am not familiar with, but I would not recommend it with a traditional compression style headset. After installing a standard start nut, the rattle and wiggle (albeit minor to begin with) was gone.

I use these on all my threadless forks, even the ones without carbon fiber steer tubes (where they are essential). I've got a star nut installation tool too, but this just seems like a more elegant solution to keep your headset together. I've yet to have one loosen, even on very rough terrain. NB's unit is as good as anyone's, plus they have the 1-inch size which is getting hard to find.

I was not ready to cut the steerer on my new bike because I wanted several hundred miles of touring to get the fit just right. I also did not want to have to get any special tools or techniques to install a star fangled nut. This expansion plug was perfect. It's design included a lip that prevented it from dropping too far into the steerer before it was tightened into place. Any amateur can install it correctly without a mistake.
