Comments about Nashbar Pro Cable Cutter:

Works ok for the annual replacement of cables. Spring is weak & the metal rusts easily (other metal tools have not rusted which are stored in the same area). Doesn't include the crimper feature like Park Tool, so use some pliers instead. Cuts are not as clean as I would like. Housing definitely gets crushed, so use a dremel for housing instead.

Back in the 80's I worked in a well known bike shop as a repairman ect. I used professional grade tools every day and this pair of cutters works as well as the best! I have only used them a couple times so I can't comment on the life of the cutting edge or the durability of the product in general. I noticed that the return spring is a little weaker than a more expensive tool, but I think for the average mechanic who doesn't do it professionally they will be just fine! Not having a crimper on this tool is no big deal since I solder my cable ends!

Partial tang, Sharp cut but not straight

Comments about Nashbar Pro Cable Cutter:

The partial tang is probably the most annoying thing about these cutters. The grip broke off where the tang ended so I've lost some leverage. If you're applying pressure at the ends of the grips, the handle ends up having two fulcrum points. 1 at the pivot (where it's supposed to be) and another where the tang ends so you lose leverage and the grip ultimately breaks off from repeated bending around that point. They do not cut perpendicular to the housing either so some filing is in order. They work fine for casual use, but as my bike collection grew these couldn't keep up.

Comments about Nashbar Pro Cable Cutter:

Has two cutters, a large outer one for housings and a small inner one that is presumably for cables. The inner one is a bit inconvenient because it requires feeding the cable in through the tool, so I use the larger cutter for both and it works okay.

This tool lacks the cable tip crimper found on some other models, which means you will need another tool for crimping (I use a standard electrical tool). This is another minor inconvenience; if you do a lot of cables you might find it worth paying the additional cost of a higher-end tool.

For the casual hobbyist it's well worth the price.

Comments about Nashbar Pro Cable Cutter:

I've held off on a practical tool like this for years (like since the 90's) and finally decided that if this tool even lasts me 5 years it was worth it to be able to trim cables cleanly.

The cutters works great and I wished I would've gotten it sooner! I'd avoid all those frayed ends of new cables because I had to use regular wire cutters that pinches the cables flat and never cuts on the first pinch; or had to flex the cables under cutting pressure to break the last few strands...by then it's all frayed so re-routing those cables is frustrating if not impossible at times...

Cutter is well built and should last me 10+ years (given that I'd probably only use it 2-3x per year); not sure about it being used in a bike shop setting; blades might need sharpening.

Save yourself the frustrations of frayed cables that can't be re-used (after say cleaning and re-lubing the cables and you wanted to re-insert through a housing or grommets)...

I used this cable cutter to um, cut a cable and a cable sleeve. I read about some other tips, but one of them was to get this.

I did not need to do anything to the cable sleeve once I cut it. The cut was clean and relatively straight. It did not collapse the cable sleeve, so I did not have to reopen the sleeve or file the end of the sleeve after I was done.

Comments about Nashbar Pro Cable Cutter:

Works well but does cut at a slight angle. That might be an issue with all cable cutters and is probably corrected by starting the cut at the opposite angle. It doesn't have a built in awl like the Park tool, but for the $10 saving it's not too hard to find a small nail or drill bit to smooth the hole.
