Great bell, not so great compass

        Comments about Nashbar Compass Bell:

Bought this to replace a bell with a muted tone. This bell has a clean and sharp tone, very nice.

The compass could have been designed better. Yes, it floats freely no matter what the orientation when mounted on your handlebar .. but .. I would rather have the NESW scale reversed.

You look at the compass FROM THE REAR (as it is on the handlebars ahead of you) so what you see (facing you) is the direction BEHIND you, not the direction you are facing. You always have to mentally reverse the direction indicated.

        Comments about Nashbar Compass Bell:

This goofy little thing is just cool.

I do some extended training rides that take me on some rail/trail routs with tons of ear bud wearing strollers and just yelling "On your left!!!" scares the snot outta %84 of them. It does the same to hikers and dog walkers on multi-use trails. Scared people get grumpy.

This little bell emits a loud, pleasant chime and alerts folks to my coming approach while reducing any startling effect I'd otherwise inflict on 'em. I can warn folks at a greater distance as well, and keeping the peace is the goal when sharing the trails.

the compass actually works, and that in itself justifies the minimal cost of the bell! And its come in handy, too!

Plus... seriously a bell with a compass built in is just rad, yo.

          Comments about Nashbar Compass Bell:

Bell is simple, just a quick metallic noise/ not really a bell. I read reviews about the compass not working. I put it at the base of my Aero bars, so it's not on metal, which throws the compass off. It works great for me. At the price I wasn't really worried about trying it out.

            Comments about Nashbar Compass Bell:

Will only fit on mountain bike, hybrid, last century road bikes, etc smaller handlebars. Will not fit on oversized road bars. It does fit on aerobars... Compass looks cool, but doesn't work, only points "North" to the metal handlebars.

                Comments about Nashbar Compass Bell:

This bell works great. Only issue is that it doesn't quite fit on my handlebar, so it isn't screwed on and I just take it off if my bike is parked where parts might "walk off". You can't beat the price, and it does encourage pedestrians to make room for me on the bike path.

                  Comments about Nashbar Compass Bell:

I read the reviews and already knew the cons on this item (compass ineffective) but wanted an inexpensive bell so I could signal my approach to fellow bicyclist who may actually be riding at a slower speed than myself (older women and some younger children. Mounts easy enough and a good deal just don't expect the "GPS" function to work right.

                      Comments about Nashbar Compass Bell:

the screw that fits the bell to bicycle is not replaceable and too short for some handlebars - no hardware store, spare parts in bike shops, etc you would be very lucky to find replacement at all. Perhaps after more bike shops, hardware stores that have hard to find screws…

                            Comments about Nashbar Compass Bell:

I wanted to add a bell and thought for a few bucks how could I go wrong (my mistake). The bell works ok, it's a single ding with every flick of the thumb, i.e. one flick = 1 ding. The flicker is adjustable.

The compass will point towards metal objects like a shifter or cable, so north is always in front of me no matter what direction I go. The compass works if it is not mounted on the bike but I could not mount it were it would work.

There are better bells out there.

                              Comments about Nashbar Compass Bell:

It's a bell. Compass didn't seem to point North but I didn't get it for a GPS system. It's half the price (or less) of any other bell you can find on the market, so it's a great value. The bell is very loud and easy to use. It is not a pleasant sound- it's very metallic and harsh. But then again it's to warn pedestrians. I'm very pleased with this functional study bell- it's a metal cylinder with a metal lever that hits against it- I would imagine it would be fairly hard to break.
