Comments about Nashbar Expanding Fork Plug:

I haven't built a bike or installed a suspension MTB fork in years. This is the first expansion plug I've installed and once you pre-expand for a snug fit before installing, it works very well. I don't think I'll use a star nut again, love the concept and aesthetics of the Nashbar plug.

Comments about Nashbar Expanding Fork Plug:

This expander plug was easy to install and tighten in place. It has a flange on top that prevents it from sliding all the way down into the steerer so it can't go too deep or have to be retrieved. I used it to replace an FSA expander and it was both lighter and easier to adjust. Much less expensive than all the others I considered.

Comments about Nashbar Expanding Fork Plug:

I bought this to replace the compression cap on my Felt F75, which despite being in perfect shape when I bought it, seemed to have a Felt brand compression plug, but a Bontrager top cap and screw... which resulted (in combination with me and other amateur mechanics fiddling around without a torque wrench) in a stripped compression plug, and therefore A LOT of play in the steerer tube.

I dropped this into the steerer tube, adjusted the lower screw a few times, then slid it down gently with some carbon assembly compound, and tightened the top screw to 5nm. I live in Oklahoma, where I've dislodged bearings going over some of the terrible bumps that are often unavoidable here, and this compression plug has stayed in place and kept my fork from cracking. I've only had it for a week, but I say that it does the job well for the money.

You may find a lighter weight product elsewhere, and if your bike is new enough, it may be worth it to invest in replacement parts from the bike's manufacturer, but for the age of my ride, this works perfectly!

Comments about Nashbar Expanding Fork Plug:

I was converting an early 80's all aluminum race bike to a much more useful commuter bike. Went with new carbon forks (Nashbar) and threadless. This made finishing off the conversion look clean and professional besides functioning exactly like a normal cap with a star nut.

This product has sufficiently replaced the former star nut configuration, which I believe is awesome. Sure it does require a bit of tinkering to get it started, but once you got it, its easy, and super strong. I am so glad I gave this a try with my recent fork replacement.

This thing is awsome! Star nuts can go away.
I think this thing holds tighter than a star nut. It is so easy to install, no special tools. If you are looking to replace a fork, this is the way to go.

Comments about Nashbar Expanding Fork Plug:

To the reviewer who had rattling from this, a mistake in installing was made I am sure. You tighten the expander with a 6 mm allen and you tighten the top cap with a 5 mm allen. This is one of the alluring aspects of the ingenious design. This person likely used a 5 mm to tighten the expander and never got it tight enough, easy to do. You can easily tighten this fork plug so that loosening is not an issue. If you don't plan to ever change the steerer tube length, a star nut still works well but I like the elegance of this design.

Comments about Nashbar Expanding Fork Plug:

I prefer using this over the cheap star nut on the alloy tubes as well as carbon tubes that require it because you can easily remove it later if you want to re-cut the steerer tube. It lets you cut the steerer tube long and if you find that is too much, you remove the expander plug easily and re-cut. For the time you spend playing with the forks, this is a reasonable way to not commit to a certain length steerer tube and make a change as needed. It is easier to install and does not require special tools either. Star nuts are OK but
this is the way to go for its ability to change out.
