Comments about Garmin Edge 500 GPS Bike Computer:

Awesome computer. I upgraded from the 705 and "upgrade" doesn't feel like a good enough word. The data is basically the same but the smaller size doesn't take anything away from the ease of reading the screen. It makes the cockpit look cleaner too.

Honestly, I do not have the item yet, after almost 3 weeks of waiting I was told to wait for another week and a half. As soon as O get it, I will place new review on it. Btw, I live in Guam si I guess this is the shipping timeframe for us here in our island.

Comments about Garmin Edge 500 GPS Bike Computer:

Garmin claimed in the compatible charts that unit could be with ANT+ sensors such as Cateye, Vetta, Sportex. It was not. So, I ordered the HRM and Cadance/Speed sensors later, wasted time and money. Now , the Edge works accurately with the HRM, and SPD/CAD sensors. It is slow in finding the sat signals. Temp reads high about 10 to 5 degs, depending on how warm or cold the air is. Also, inaccurate with grade ( about 4-6%), also I wonder about the calories because my standard HRM monitors all give a higher calorie count than the Edge. I use Garmin connect and that works fine. The Training Center software not so good, information too condensed. As a HRM, SP/CAD, and training data it is good. GPS is slow and iffy.

Comments about Garmin Edge 500 GPS Bike Computer:

Display can become crowded and info too small to read. However, Garmin has done a great job with allowing one to program pages so they have as little or as much info thatis right for you. Once I got the info that was important to me programmed on multiple pages, I knew this device was a winner.

Comments about Garmin Edge 500 GPS Bike Computer:

Purchased to step up training. Easy to install; basically rubberband it to the bar stem. Took a bit of time to get the screens configured, but not difficult. The the reasons I returned it are related mostly to the inaccurate barometric altimeter... (1) Slow to capture live data on ascent and descent. On a climb, it often takes two to four minutes until it captures the degree and altitude change. A climb of 50 to 70 feet won't show until leveled out at the top. (2) Altitude at departure and return can be off by 10 percent. (3) Auto-stop start delayed by a 100 yards or more on restart. Problems (1) and (2) could conceivably be solved by setting waypoints or if the machine was gps rather than pressure based. Retailer advised me issue was mine rather than machines for riding under power lines. Alas, none of the problems occurred on routes with tension lines, just a poor performer or perhaps a bad machine. Another techie advised that the alti problems are solved when moving up to the 800. But, little over the top for my purposes. Back to the store.

Since I did not want to wait for a month before I get a replacement (two weeks to send it back and another two weeks to get back to me(slow mail))Paid full price for second Garmin Edge. Was told that I should not have to pay the DUTY again. Surprise... cost $35.00 for duty.

Comments about Garmin Edge 500 GPS Bike Computer:

This unit was purchased in addition to the Garmin Edge 800 which I already own. The Edge 500 unit is smaller and less obtrusive when mounted on the stem during a race or when I don't really need the mapping functions on the Edge 800. This unit uses the same mount as the 800 so I can use either one.

I use the 500 with the speed/cadence sensor I received with my 800 and it works fine. Again, I can go back and forth between the units without any fuss. I also have multiple bikes set up on both units.

The Garmin software is so-so. It works okay but I usually use Strava online and rubiTrack on my Mac instead. You may need to use Garmin Training Center or Basecamp to convert your tracks to courses if that's something you want to do.

I did have a problem with the unit. The Enter key was intermittent and stopped working entirely within a week. However, Garmin took it back without question and sent me a brand new one immediately which has been fine. I'm sure Nashbar would have done the same had I returned it to them instead.

I wish that this product had a protective cover available for it like the Edge 800. I have one on the 800 and it protects it nicely from being bumped or dropped.

Comments about Garmin Edge 500 GPS Bike Computer:

This thing is the best new toy for my bike in years. No magnets, no sensor on my fork, no stupid zip ties, it works easily with my computer, more accurate than my Polar, plenty of battery life, easy to read and the multiple screens are awesome. I can easily transfer it to another bike without calibration, etc. Just a great product.
