Comments about Nashbar Universal Fit Mountain Rack:

Having read ALL of the reviews before buying, I decided to try to put what I think is useful size/fit etc. info all in one place.
FIT: the rack is 8"ID where it mounts to the dropouts, I was concerned as my hybrid is 7"OD there so this was more than wide enough. The included allen screws are of good quality with correct thread tolerances and they drew the rack in tight with no problems. The rack is bowed a bit as a result but I don't see that as an issue unless it will interfere with whatever bags you may want to hang from it. I did not think that bending the rack at the points where the tube had already been tightly curved near the platform was a good idea, and bending that close to the welds put me off from trying to adjust it there as well. The problem of the mounting straps that go to the frame being too short has been solved, though the longer straps have several slots, not just one long one, so the short space where the each of the slots end could end up covering one of the holes in the rack. Happened to me, I lowered the rack as provided for and all was good since that "moved" the straps further back in relation to the rack and all slots/holes lined up. The breaks in the slots have to be there for strength, so the slots can't just spread wide on you when you tighten down the fasteners. At it's lowest adjustment height, the rack fit easily over 700C wheels with 700 X 32 tires. Fenders would fit as well. The one design flaw I take issue with that makes no sense to me is that the rear of the platform tilts up, meaning if you want to use a milk crate or other rigid flat container it will only contact the tail end and somewhere up toward the front of the rack. This to me was a stupid design decision as it has nothing to do with making the rack stronger and decreases it's utility. If it becomes a problem I'll mount something light as a spacer onto the platform that lets whatever flat thing I need to put there clear the tail end. Spacers are included for use with narrower frames, but I would not use them (or this rack) on such a frame since the shear force is magnified by even a short moment arm like that, meaning the rack and/or dropout holes get nuked if you're carrying max weight and hit a bad bump. Just get a rack that fits a narrower frame since using this rack on anything below a 6"OD dropout dimension is likely to get unpleasantly funky even if you bend the tabs on the adjustment part to be flat against the dropouts once drawn in. One thing you will notice from the picture is that the front part of the rack does not get as close to the frame as other racks do, where the center vertical tube is generally at the center of the platform. On this rack it's about a 2/5 front - 3/5 back split. The platform itself is trapezoidal, not rectangular and is 15 1/2" long X 5 3/4" wide at the widest point at the vertical tubes tapering to 5" at the back end. In closing, I wish mfg's and merchants would include basic size info on the stuff they sell, especially when it's going to be used on a multitude of varied products like bikes. Save us all time at the front end ya think?

Won't fit on Specialized Ariel 29'er bike

    • Doesn't fit
    • Stays Too Short

Comments about Nashbar Universal Fit Mountain Rack:

Rack fit on Specialized Ariel 29'er very easily, but the stainless steel stays, or braces as I call them, are 3 " too short. Nashbar does not offer longer stays as Topeak does. Have to remove and return rack.

Comments about Nashbar Universal Fit Mountain Rack:

The Nashbar Universal Fit Mountain Rack was easy to install with basic tools. Total time about 30 minutes with final adjustments. I installed the rack on my hydraulic disk mountain bike, its sturdy, quiet, and it looks good. I use a milk crate strapped to the rack to do most of my grocery shopping, and general running around. I've put the bike down several times and the rack hasn't moved a bit. recommend this product.

I bought this rack because I needed a rack that would be tall enough to clear the top of the fender on our Trek Cruiseliner Tandem.
Other racks weren't adjustable for height and the specs generally didn't address their height.
I inquired of Bike Nashbar re. the max height of this rack and they responded in less than 24 hours with a definitive answer.
I ordered the rack and it works perfectly and was very easy to install.

I put two Wald folding baskets on this rack and can now carry two huge canvas bags of groceries on my bike along with three children under 6. After two years of heavy use, my old rack broke in a car accident, saving my wheel from needing a true. Replaced it with the same rack, and I'm golden again. Only problem is that my bike is mostly chrome and grey. I wish they had a chrome option.

Comments about Nashbar Universal Fit Mountain Rack:

First off, the rack is very wide. It includes one inch spacers so it will fit, but it's wider than it needs to be. Second, if you have a Trek FX, it won't fit. The frame geometry just wont allow it to fit. It fit fine on my daughter's Specialized Sirrus. It also functions as a fender, keeping rain off your back.

Comments about Nashbar Universal Fit Mountain Rack:

It took my friend an I a good hour to get this thing mounted to my frame. I think part of the reason it took so long is that I have a pretty small road bike that I use for commuting, but I don't think it should have been so difficult. We actually had to warp the metal attachments so they would fit around the brakes. I wouldn't recommend this for smaller frames.
