Great commuter and brick road bomber

Cons

Comments about Continental Contact II City Tire:

I bought the 37 cm wide version and run low pressure. The ride is excellent on rough brick roads with the low pressure and the wet traction is also excellent. The rolling resistance is still very low even with the low pressure. Great choice for a tough and durable city commuter tire. Sure they are heavy but on the short ride to work or home I want a nice ride.

good tire. I expect it to be long lasting like other Conti tires I have used. Only 30 mm wide but I expected that having owned Contis before.

Comments about Continental Contact II City Tire:

So you just dropped $1,000 (or more) on a steel frame city commuter bike. Now you find out the tires from the factory aren't really worth a --- fill in word of your choice. That's what happened to me. I bought a 2015 Raleigh Clubman disc – Bicycling Magazine's "Editor's Choice" for that style of bike. They stated it was a great commuter bike, and I totally agree, except for one glaring flaw. The Kenda tires from the factory only lasted about 2,000 miles. With the amount of riding I do in a year, I needed something better than that. Enter these Continental tires.

Do they come with a folding bead? Nope. Are they light? Nope, not at 500g per tire. But they're going on a heavier steel frame bike anyway; I'm not a "weight weenie". Do they have a beefy tread area? Yes. Do they run small – as one reviewer posted? Not IMHO. In fact, they appear to be slightly thicker (wider) than the factory Kenda tires. And given Continental's record for longevity, I'm betting they last a lot longer than 2,000 miles. The Continental Gatorskins on my road bike are nearing 2,000 miles & still look practically new.

Now I can't give all 5 stars because honestly – after only a few miles it's hard to predict what's to come later on down the road; but so far, so good. They ride smooth, even on rough city streets or the occasional jaunt across compacted dirt and/or fine gravel. Just to be clear, I would NOT take them out on a 'rails-to-trails' bike path. They're just too narrow for that distance. But for city commuting, this "Old Hippie" gives them big thumbs up.

small change from a 23 to a 28 tire, but what a difference. Smooth ride without gaining rolling resistance. Great traction in Chicago rain on all surfaces.

Comments about Continental Contact II City Tire:

I converted my Motobecane road bike into a commuter for my 25-40 mile round trip ride to work(depends on the route chosen). I take some rough back streets to avoid traffic, these tires make that possible. On smooth surfaces I am able to keep up with or pass riders with racing tires. Their beauty is the versatility to do both. I'm sure I'll be getting a 4th set.

        Not true to size

        By Bob

        from Gaithersburg, MD

        About Me Commuter

        Verified Buyer

Comments about Continental Contact II City Tire:

I returned these. They're quality tires, go on easily, but not true to size. I wanted to find the widest tire possible that'd fit my road bike and use it for commuting. These 28 mm tires on my Mavic rims measured 24 mm wide. I learned that all Contis run small, and so purchased Gatorskins 32mm that fit perfectly, and measure a little bit under 30mm. I'm thinking that a better standard is needed.
