Comments about Nashbar Mechanical Disc Brake Set:

I bought this for a Yuba Mundo which uses a non-standard mounting bracket in back (it requires a 180mm disc, which I got from a local shop for $24). Other than that it was an easy "bolt on" replacement for the existing brakes, which were old and tired. Be sure you have a very high quality T25 Torx wrench.

Comments about Nashbar Mechanical Disc Brake Set:

I got these and the Vuelta Starlite 26 wheels on cyber Monday to put on a 2006 Gary Fisher Advance. I only did it because I've been curious about the quality of the wheels and brakes and wanted to check them out. The free overweight item shipping sealed the deal.

They were easy to install. I did have to get a rear adapter separately because the bike did not originally come setup for rear discs. They work fine with no noise at all. They aren't real powerful (yet) but I think it's because they still need more breaking in and final adjustment.

They are pretty much just what is advertised. As one reviewer stated, there is no modulation adjustment.

Comments about Nashbar Mechanical Disc Brake Set:

No more modulation adjustment! Everything was going good until I attempted to locate the modulation adjustment screw as describe in the instructions. It simply wasn't there. I called Nashbar, and the gentleman told me that the latest production run didn't have modulation adjustment. That would have been ok if the modulation on both calipers was the same, but it's way off, and there's no way to adjust it. I assume all the glowing reviews are for the previous version with modulation adjustment capabilities.

Comments about Nashbar Mechanical Disc Brake Set:

This is the second set of Nashbar Mechanical disc brakes I bought, so that serves as an endorsement alone. I built a Trek 4300 vintage 2008 for my son, who is 6'6" and 220 lbs. The bike was stolen, and I found another 4300 vintage 2003 which he insisted on disc brakes. I bought a wheelset from Nashbar also: Shimano Deore hubs and Rhino Lite Sun rims, a good set of sturdy disc-ready wheels. I noticed that the discs seemed to have an oil film on them out of the box, so clean them with soap and water or a solvent BEFORE you run them through the calipers.

Otherwise an excellent product. I should note the 2003 bike needed an adapter to mount the rear caliper to the frame, which Nashbar customer support informed me the existence of, and that the manufacturer of the bike sold them, The local dealer ordered them.

Comments about Nashbar Mechanical Disc Brake Set:

My bike had the mounts for disc brakes, but came with rim brakes. I was worried that it was going to be difficult to convert them over, but with these, it was amazingly simple and took very little adjustments. Love my new brakes, I can't wait to use them this winter in the snow.

This product was a great improvment on braking distance relative to the OEM rubber brakes. I use my bicycle to commute to school in a very hilly city, Reno,NV. Processing time and shipping was very fast process. Very satisfied with product.

Comments about Nashbar Mechanical Disc Brake Set:

This is a good kit to switch from V brakes to disc. All the parts mounted up very well. Some parts were not marked Front or Rear, so it took a little trial and error before I got it right. In the end, it is worth the time and effort. I'd recommend the kit.

Comments about Nashbar Mechanical Disc Brake Set:

I have one set on a mountain bike and another set on a commuter. They are very easy to set up, function well, and seem to be very durable. The cable housing is a name brand, and the levers are smooth and heavy duty. Avid BB7s are a little better for tweaking the pads to near perfect alignment. Also, I find it easier to stop with the BB7s. But I have never had a problem with my Nashbar brakes. They do what they are supposed to do at a very good price.

Comments about Nashbar Mechanical Disc Brake Set:

I just put these on a new 29'r frame I built into a light tourer/gravel grinder. They were apx half the price of most disc setups and are working beautifully. I don't know yet about long-term durability but suspect they will be fine. They say hydraulic systems are stronger and more responsive; however I can't imagine wanting or needing more stopping power. Personally, I did not want to deal w brake fluid (which is toxic) or the various other oils on my bike. The NB mechanicals are easy to adjust once you read the instructions and experiment a bit. The sole small criticism: the mounting brackets are supposed to be labeled "F" and "R" for front and rear. I could not find this and the photos were pretty useless. Also, the rear bracket is higher on one end than the other and the instructions don't show which end goes toward the back of the bike. This led to some trial and error in the mounting which could have been avoided. On balance, these are great brakes for a great price.
