Comments about Gear Up Up & Away Bike Hoist System:

Convenient bike hoist system and works well in my tall garage. 3 boys plus the adult bikes makes storage a challenge. We have 6 of these to keep our floor space.
I've taken all of them and mounted the bike hoist pieces on 1" x 4" x 36" long pine. Then I attach the pine to the ceiling.
The cords are a little cheap; first hoists I bought had better cords.

Comments about Gear Up Up & Away Bike Hoist System:

The directions say you'll need a screwdriver and measuring tape. You'd better add a drill bit and a drill to create pilot holes for the screws. But good luck, because even if you drill pilot holes the screws are made of such cheap metal the heads strip out. Then you have to take the screws out with pliers because the heads strip out before they're tight. If you don't have some real screws stashed in your basement, you'll have to make a run to the hardware store.
The illustrations in the instructions are tiny and blurry. You'll need some more luck trying to figure out how to thread the rope through the last pulley mechanism, because the instructions and illustrations are useless.
I bought this to raise a tandem up out of the way in the garage. The pictures on Nashbar's site make you think the pulleys go up evenly, together, as you pull on the rope. No, not really. One end goes up while the other doesn't move at all. After several pulls, you have to pull the high end of the bike DOWN to get the low end UP, and keep repeating that exercise until both ends are finally fully raised.
The rope supplied with the kit is slippery and thin. That means when you raise a heavy bike like a tandem you can't get a good grip on the rope to lift the bike. So you wrap the rope around your hands. This allows you to lift the bike, but the rope is so thin it now cuts into your hands most uncomfortably from the weight of the tandem. So I recommend keeping a good set of work gloves nearby.
I've done many home projects, from simple basic repairs to complete bath and kitchen renovations starting from the bare walls. I found installing this device a trial and more effort than it deserved.

Comments about Gear Up Up & Away Bike Hoist System:

I was so excited to order on of these to try out for my bike as I just moved into a loft with 18 foot ceilings. After mounting it as the instructions indicated and watching the youtube video to make sure that I ran the rope properly I can say that this product is garbage. Only one of the pulleys has lifting power and I can raise one end of the bike while having to pull the rope around the first pulley to lift the other end of the bike. After raising the bike to the ceiling I had to get a ladder to get the bike down.

If you want a pulley system you are better off buying a few Pulleys and some rope, (both of which will be much higher quality) from your local home improvement store to make your own pulley system. After just playing around with it trying to get it to work properly the rope started to frey and I am not sure If I would try to use it to hold my bike from the ceiling.

Although its a great idea and If it worked, I would clearly order a few more of them, it does not work and I am stuck with my bikes on an upright floor stand instead of hanging them above where they should be.

system works to get bikes up and out of the way. the bracket works for the handlebars but however not the seat. nowhere for the bracket to grip. modified via visit to Lowes for carabiner clamp and straps to go under and around the seat.

You can hang the bike from the ceiling in just a few minutes without pulling out a ladder. You can raise the bike to any height you like to work on it, but you have to keep the bike from swinging since it isn't a real repair stand. The bracket seems to be designed to mount to a flat board instead of a ceiling joist.

Comments about Gear Up Up & Away Bike Hoist System:

I have 3 bikes so I wanted to be able to mount them from my garage ceiling to save space. I screwed the pulleys into 3 2x6 mounting boards and nailed them into the rafters of my garage. They work great and keep my bikes looking organized and out of the way. My only challenge was figuring out where to mount the brackettes that store the extra rope. It has to be mounted on a side wall. I wish they would put some sort of rope-winder device on the end to take up the excess. (Pay attention to the distance between the pulleys measurement. If they are too far apart or too close together the hooks won't grab the bike correctly.)
