Comments about Nashbar Shadow 2-Bike Hitch Rack:

Just bought this rack to replace an old 4-bike hitch rack. I needed something my wife could load without me being around. So far, so good. It is low enough to the ground that she can easily load and unload the bikes. Bikes are more easily protected and they don't swing or move much during transport. I can't speak to durability, as I just got it. The velcro strap design could be a bit better, but still functional.

Comments about Nashbar Shadow 2-Bike Hitch Rack:

Good bike rack that is easy to use and protects my bikes. The bikes don't move and will NOT get scratched. The adjusters tend to stick which means that you have to "jiggle" them a little bit to un-load the bikes. Rack also needs an eyelet to attach a cable to properly lock your bike. I've had one added but it should be standard. Overall - I would buy this rack again. It's a good value. If the above mentioned problems were modified this bike rack would be great not just good.

Comments about Nashbar Shadow 2-Bike Hitch Rack:

Two issues to be aware of: The pin to secure the rack to the hitch receiver is threaded so you can't use a hitch pin to lock the rack onto the vehicle unless you drill out the threads. As designed, all someone has to do is unscrew the pin from the hitch and walk away with the rack (maybe with your bikes attached to it). The threaded plate is hardened steel and it took a drill press and a couple of drill bits to get the opening wide enough to accept a standard hitch pin lock. It's a bad design but not a deal breaker. The second small issue is that the adapter to up-size to a two inch receiver is slightly undersized, so I had to add spacers (shims) to keep the rack from tipping back and forth with the bikes on it. Those two issues are not insurmountable if you have tools and time. At 1/3 the price of other racks it's a great deal. If it breaks, someone steals it, or backs into it, I'l just get a new one and still be ahead of the game. I

Comments about Nashbar Shadow 2-Bike Hitch Rack:

The rack was easy to assemble and appears to be of sound construction. A friend and I took a 2700 mile trip with our mountain bikes (Palo Dura canyon, Sedona and the Grand Canyon area).

Bikes are easy to load. There is a bit of flex/movement in the rack when traveling but the clamps remained secure throughout...even when we encountered a 40-50 mph wind storm. Quite impressive. The tilt feature is a nice touch allowing me to open the rear gate on my Subaru Outback.

One issue was that I was shipped 4 identical wheel loops. Should have 2 different pair. Nashbar shipped the replacements within a week.

All in all this is a well made rack at a very good price.

Comments about Nashbar Shadow 2-Bike Hitch Rack:

I will be using the rack to carry two diamondback mountain bikes behind a car attached to a RV. The max wt. for the carrier is 90 lbs. and the two diamondbacks come a little under 80 lbs. and seem like a lot of weight on it. I actually added a strap from the top of the carrier to the top of the car for additional support. As long as it holds up with those bikes I will be satisfied. I will up date in 6 mths.

Comments about Nashbar Shadow 2-Bike Hitch Rack:

Overall this rack is solidly constructed but a poor design. The rack is heavy and very bulky. It takes up a lot of room when off of the car and not easily stored. A simple fix would be to make the vertical mast slide into the horizontal tongue piece and secured with a quick release pin. This would make the rack capable of being mounted in two separate pieces and more easily stashed in a trunk, I ended up returning this item. Very unusual for me for Nashbar branded products.

Comments about Nashbar Shadow 2-Bike Hitch Rack:

I have been looking for a hitch-mounted 2 bike rack for a while. I wanted to stay in the $150-$175 price range. After a lot of online research I decided on this one. I believe it was the right choice. The construction is very heavy duty, including a powder-coated finish. If you are not familiar with that term it is paint that is basically baked on and very durable with a textured finish. I have not used it yet (it's below freezing here in Chicago right now) but I have no reason to believe that it won't work great. ONE TIP: DO NOT FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS WORD FOR WORD! The instructions tell you to assemble the wheel hoops and then slide them onto the bar. Good luck with that. The fit is very snug. That coupled with the fact that a small plastic cap potrudes out from the top of the bar makes it all but IMPOSSIBLE to slide them on after assembly. Fortunately there is an easy work around. Just assemble the two inner plastic halves on the bar and then slip on the u-shaped steel component, drop in the hoop and slide thru the carraige bolt. Voila! By the way, my box arrived all crushed and taped together with a hole in it the size of my open hand! I thought for sure there would be damage or missing parts, but luckily all seems to be well. Bottom line: buy this hitch! You won't be disappointed
