Comments about VDO C3 Wired Cycle Computer:

Setup not as intuitive as the manual (a tome in 12 languages, tell you everything but what you need to know!) would like you to believe. After much searching, found the info online. NB would be nice to include a printout (or link) to the setup info with each sale.

Comments about VDO C3 Wired Cycle Computer:

A little frustrating to set up initially. the english online manual does help, But the manual isn't perfect. I bought this as an inexpesive replacement for a new bike. I didn't want to deal with two batteries of the wireless variety. This unit does more than I need.Easy to mount and utilize.

I understood from the beginning that this product would have a foreign instructional book, so that didn't frustrate me. I returned this product for the fact that it didn't work. Either I got a "bad egg" or it could be in this product generally. The functions turned on and I was able to program it, but the devices magnetic clamp did not read the odometer and avg. speed.

It replaced an el cheapo Bell device that was a piece of junk. It is head and shoulders above the old unit. It is easier to use and seem to of higher quality of manufacture.

Comments about VDO C3 Wired Cycle Computer:

I like wired because it's one less battery to deal with, although the sensor wiring is tacky looking. The instructions are on-line in English. When installing the head into the bracket, you must rotate it until a click is heard, or it will not work. The head will line up with the bracket. It's a little tight at first. The rest(programming, using) is easy once you read the directions.

While basic, it is extremely versatile and easy to install. It has a number of very nice features that makes this cyclometer one of the very best values for the money. It has a very elegant design that looks great on my vintage ride especially because of its compact package. If you're after a no-nonsense meter for your ride this is the one.

Comments about VDO C3 Wired Cycle Computer:

I have to write this review. Two weeks ago I spent a frustrating afternoon installing the VDO C3 on a Trek Madone. The mounting strap securing the head unit initially is stiff and straight, and difficult to feed into the screw drive that secures it. I also found placement of the sensor on fork to be fussy--too easy for it to hit the spokes or if not, to be too far from the magnet. But the damning frustration was that once installed, I couldn't get the computer to work. It would display time and cycle through all menus, but wouldn't show speed or distance.

I was quite ready to sit down and write a nasty review of the C3, advising all to avoid it. But then decided first to write Nashbar for their advice. Initially this too was only more frustrating. In response to a too-long email explaining the problem, Nashbar first sent the usual "thanks for contacting us; we'll get right back to you" reply, and within hours rep Casey emailed that no product specialist was available that weekend, but I should expect a reply 24 hours after Monday. Four days passed with no reply. I then included a reminder in comments on a new Nashbar order--yet still no reply. One week after my first email, I sent a second, reminding customer service of the outstanding matter. Surprisingly, this too was not responded to.

Two days ago I lost any hope of resolving the matter and began to write the product review. But then I noticed the "chat" option on Nashbar's C3 page, and decided to give it a try. Nashbar rep Josh was online and quite helpful. After discussing the installation, including my assurance that the computer was securely twisted into its receiver, Josh believed the unit defective and advised returning it for a refund. My faith in Nashbar was restored.

Today I removed the unit from the bike and intended to mail it back. But when the computer was off the bike and still in its receiver, from the underside it seemed the computer in fact hadn't been turned all the way clockwise. One solid click more was required. And of course the unit then worked fine!

So, if you buy the C3--and if you're interested in a decent, inexpensive (mine cost 12-pack beer money) cyclocomputer, there's no reason not to--be sure to turn the computer fully clockwise when installing it in its receiver. At least in my case it was easy not to, because the computer seems installed even when not fully twisted in. For me, the best way to see what was required was to have the computer in its receiver but not mounted on the bike and view it from the backside. When fully twisted in, the computer will be parallel with the mounting strap.

Other complaints--(English)documentation only available online, initial strap stiffness, sensor placement--are minor and indeed, installation was without difficulty, when I put the C3 back on the bike.

Conclusion--install it correctly and you will have a solid, inexpensive cyclocomputer.
