Ascent Mag 3-L Trainer
Achieve new heights in fitness with the Ascent Mag 3-L Trainer. The beauty of its magnetic resistance unit is the ability to select the level of resistance you want to utilize - in this case three levels, in the realms of Peaceful Sunday Cruise to Hill Repeat Delirium. The level of resistance is set right on the unit itself and of course you've got the full run of gears on your bike to further fine-tune the exertion level. The amount of noise generated is rather low as well so there'll be no need to crank the volume to high decibels as you enjoy your favorite tunes, DVDs, or TV shows for the duration of your workouts. This magnetic resistance trainer is perfect for indoor training at home when weather or lack of daylight puts a damper on riding outdoors and it's also portable enough to be the ideal means for getting warmed-up and ready to rock at a race.

Comments about Ascent Mag 3-L Trainer:

After being scheduled for knee replacement, I ordered this because surgeon wanted cycling exercise in the weeks before and after surgery. It arrived in half the promised time, set up in less time than it took to read instructions, and has been in use since. It does just what I hoped it would do, and I am quite pleased. So pleased, in fact, that I have recommended it to several friends.

Comments about Ascent Mag 3-L Trainer:

It took about 5 minutes to set up. That's not counting the fact that I had to put on a street tire on the mountain bike. I also got a cycle computer and a block to hold the front wheel.

If the tightening knob is hard to turn, loosen the locking clamp (the inner black plastic nut.) The only little bit of difficulty I had was holding the bike steady while I clamped it in.

If you are bending your wheel, lower the mag unit so that it is the right distance for your wheel and tire. You are supposed to adjust it until it barely make contact and then 1.5 more turns. I found that less than one more turn was adequate. Too much pressure on the mag unit wears down the tire. If you are bending a wheel, you must have it waaaaay to tight. The knob to tighten the bike in place and the knob to move the mag unit should be easy to turn. If they are not, you either habe the locking clamp engaged, of the mag unit adjusted way too close to the wheel.

The mag unit adjustment is from light drag to moderate drag. There is about a factor of 2 adjustment in the drag. You probably want to ride in high gear on your bike to get a good work out. In highest gear, at highest mag setting, it was similar to riding my road bike on rollers.

The noise level was lower than I thought it would be. I set it up on a loft with a hardwood floor. There is some rumble on the floor in use. I can imagine with the knobby mountain bike tire there would be a racket.

I don't have to hold any cables or anything to clamp the bike in place, but you probably don't want to put it in and take it out several times a week. I look at it as staying there for the winter, since I had to change the tire.

It seems to me that this is going to give a good workout, and with a more natural feeling bike than the stationary stand alone trainers in this price class. My wife especially wanted to use her favorite bike seat, which wasn't an option on her stand alone stationary bike.

I would recommend this to a friend, with the qualification that it is not a heavy-duty workout for a pro, and it does require a little adjustment now and then ast the bike "settles."

              Too hard to mount

Comments about Ascent Mag 3-L Trainer:

Works well once you get it mounted, but mounting takes about 30 minutes even once you know what you're doing. Tightening knob is extraordinarily difficult to turn; I need gloves to turn it even after lubricating it. It's quite difficult to line up the quick release lever, the axle on both sides, and the shifter cable while holding the bike and attempting to turn the knob with Herculean force.

I had hoped to switch my bike back and forth from the trainer to the road depending on the weather. That is not going to happen because of the time, effort, and aggravation of mounting the bike in this trainer.

I only recommend this trainer if you plan on leaving your bike on it over the winter, or if you have two bikes and can leave one on the trainer permanently.

I found the noise and resistance level of this trainer to be well within acceptable. The trainer is stable. It will mess up your shifting a bit because of how the shifter cable is bent.

Comments about Ascent Mag 3-L Trainer:

Good basic trainer. The clamping bolt very hard to turn. Beware when using with SCOTT newer frames, frame can be damaged if not careful, will have to use modified skewer. The resistance adjustment makes hardly any difference; going through gears will provide more varied resistance than the trainer's adjustment.
