Continental Gator Hardshell Road Tire
First there was GatorSkin, a remarkably durable tire in its own right. Then came Ultra GatorSkin. Now, Continental takes durability beyond the limits with the GatorHardshell Road Tire. Like the Ultra GatorSkin, the Gator HardShell tire balances great ride characteristics with long life--and at an affordable price. The Continental GatorHardshell road tire features the bead-to-bead protection of DuraSkin, PLUS a Hardshell casing and extra-wide PolyX breaker. The result is a super-durable road tire that's about as puncture-resistant as a tire can get.
  • A super long-wearing tire that resists punctures and sidewall cuts
  • Casing reinforced with DuraSkin and Hardshell-anti-cut sidewalls for extra protection
  • Smooth-rolling center tread with shoulders optimized for cornering traction
  • Extra-wide PolyX breaker covers tread from shoulder-to-shoulder, providing enhanced puncture-resistance

Comments about Continental Gator Hardshell Road Tire:

These were some of the tightest fitting clinchers I have ever seen. You better plan on having plenty of extra tubes to sacrifice to pinch flats. The Germans should be shot for ever engineering anything this incredibly tight....I would have rated these a five if it weren't for this but this is a huge drawback on the road. I think there are better choices out there for less $$$.

Comments about Continental Gator Hardshell Road Tire:

Just finished ride from San Diego to St. Augustine, FL ... No flats. Last time in 2011 I had 14 flats. This tire is very thorn resistant. Life is about 3000 miles on rear and over 4500 miles on front. When the tire wears out it's the side wall not the tread, so keep an eye on the side walls.

Not as light and fast as the Panaracer Pesala TourGuard but much tougher and flat resistant.

Comments about Continental Gator Hardshell Road Tire:

Ride in area where there seems to be constant construction and road shoulder debris, rocks, glass chips, broken metal and wood. These tires are the absolute best for rolling over just about anything and holding their integrity. Get them and buy an extra set to give to your best friend.

Comments about Continental Gator Hardshell Road Tire:

These tires are great. I've put thousands of miles on them and only one flat. I ran over a nail that went straight into the tire. It would have been a flat with any tire on the market. I weigh 185lb. and I ride with a coulple of fast groups. I've rode race tires before and I can't tell any difference. So, If your doing hard core racing you may need a higher performance tire on race day. Otherwise, these are my one and only tire I want to ride, especially when I'm by myself and out in the middle of nowhere.

Comments about Continental Gator Hardshell Road Tire:

I got about 7000 miles on a set (without swapping the front and rear) and only had one flat. I use these for daily training and the 4000S for events. The Hardshell rides a bit stiffer than the 4000 and can be tough to install when new. I bought a new set this spring and got a flat already, but I have no less confidence. In fact, if I accidentally ride through glass or strewn gravel, I have more confidence I'll be ok. These will remain my go-to training tire until something I feel is better comes along.
