Nashbar CR4 Carbon Road Bike - 11 Speed Ultegra

Every time Nashbar introduces a new carbon road bike, it gets more tricked out, more weight weenie-ish, more race-ready, and more drool worthy--well, this time we're just getting plain ridiculous. The new Nashbar CR4 Carbon Road Bike has no Achilles heel, no boat anchor parts, just bliss from the bar tape to the tires.

The CR4 Carbon Monocoque frame is this-season's best industry technology with a tapered head tube and full carbon fork to make the setup so responsive to your pedal stroke that you'll be inspired from the start. And speaking of pedal strokes, not one iota of your strength will go to waste with an oversize BB-30 bottom bracket anchoring the frameset. Not only is weight saved by eliminating the cups, but the stiffness is quite simply sublime. With so much more surface area up for grabs to attach the down tube, seat tube and chainstays -- plus room for a stout 30mm bottom bracket spindle -- deflection from all those watts you're producing is just not a worry. But don't let all this talk about stiffness worry you about comfort, because the wonders of carbon are evident in the stays which are shaped to further reduce road vibration.

With so much awesomeness going on with the frame, this featherweight filly deserves -- and most assuredly receives -- a component package to match. Gram for gram, dollar for dollar, you'd be hard-pressed to find a finer choice than Shimano Ultegra 6800 11-speed and we've spec'd plenty of it: shift/brake levers, crankset, front derailleur, rear derailleur, and cassette. The shifting is just perfect while the compact 50/34T crankset ensures you can both tame any climb as well as contest rip roaring county line sprints. You'll be blown away by how well this stuff works as so much functionality, precision, and reliability has trickled down from big brother Dura-Ace that Ultegra is a tour de force in its own right. Look closely at the pro peloton and you'll see ballers on budgets winning big-time races on Ultegra 11-speed equipped rigs.

Shimano also cranks out remarkable wheels and the RS11s are a paragon of versatility. Their 24mm-deep aluminum rims strike a balance between aerodynamics and handling while stainless steel bladed spokes, 16 front and 20 rear, will slice through the wind with aplomb. But these hoops aren't just for race day as they're sturdy and reliable enough to put through the paces day-in and day-out. There's no skimping regarding rubber, too, as folding Hutchinson Equinox 2 tires are a true all-around, all-weather performer with dual compound treads and a compliant, resilient casing.

It's only appropriate that a bike begging to be pushed to the limits has a plethora of Full Speed Ahead parts throughout. The renowned manufacture of high-end aluminum goodness is the perfect choice for the handlebars, stem, brakes, bottom bracket, and seatpost. FSA's Omega compact bars are ergonomic wonders that are double butted for strength while the cold forged Gossamer brakes will handle the drop out of warp drive with the utmost confidence.

All-in-all we're talking about a built-for-speed road racing machine that can climb, spin, and attack with the best of them. This bike is one of cycling's best secrets...but it won't stay under wraps for long.

Comments about Nashbar CR4 Carbon Road Bike - 11 Speed Ultegra:

I ride about 40-50 miles a week at about 18mph. I wanted a carbon ultegra bike and this was the only way I would ever get on one. Waited for a sale and got a deal on the CR-4. The bike showed up packaged well but had a couple bent spokes on the front rim. Nashbar offered to send a new bike but I had been waiting on this one for a while so I just declined and replaced the spokes. I took the bike to a local shop to have it tuned, torqued, trued, and lubed. Also had it fitted. The shop commented that it was a large 54 and could be measured a 55+. I'm 5'8.5" and I rode a 54 giant with 105 and the geometry was a bit larger on the CR-4. Luckily the shop was willing to swap stems because the stock stem was too long, as a matter of fact after the first ride I'll have to go down another stem size. It's hard to say if the 52 would have fit better. I suspect I'd be somewhere in the middle. Now, onto the first ride. 25 mile shake down this morning. No creaks squeaks or anything. Ride is smooth but stiff. When you step on the gas the bike responds. Shifting is incredible, butter smooth. I'd like to have ultegra brakes but the FSA brakes did just fine. Didn't get a chance to weigh it yet but it's pretty close to my dad's Giant TCR with 105. I would not hesitate recommending the CR-4. It's the best way I see an average person to get on a full carbon ultegra bike. Finish is as has been previously mentioned but quality is very nice. Saddles are personal preference and I'm not sure if this one is right for me. I've been riding a cut out and may have to go back to one.

Comments about Nashbar CR4 Carbon Road Bike - 11 Speed Ultegra:

Bought the bike in February on sale with free shipping (i.e. a steal). It arrived via UPS with a big hole gouged in the box, but it was packed so well that no damage was done. I bought the Nashbar 1/4" torque wrench set to check/tighten the headset, crank, derailleur, seat post and brake caliper bolts. The brake pads needed adjustment. I bought a Shimano Hollowtech-II crank-arm/cap tool (TL-FC16) to tighten the crank cap. So I spent about $50 on tools, some time on YouTube and had the bike ready to ride in an hour or so.

I just got back from my shake-out ride and am really liking the bike. It's very quiet -- no creaking bottom bracket as others have reported. And it's much more comfortable on NH's cracked and broken pavement than the aluminum Cannondale it's replacing.

The specs say it has an 11-25 cassette but it's an 11-28 which is better for climbing. If you want to go to an 11-32, you'll need to change to the long cage derailleur.

The bike is set up for racing -- with a hard seat and slick tires. I changed both.

Others complained that the FSA brakes were not grabby enough. They looked okay to me, but I replaced them with an Ultegra set before the first ride because I wanted a complete Ultegra bike.

The frame is smooth, but it's splotchy. From a distance, it's flat black. Close up it resembles the skin on an SR-71 or stealth fighter. And it has no decals (thank you Nashbar). It's just what I wanted. However if you're looking for a flashy bike with a great paint job, you probably won't be happy with this bike.

Comments about Nashbar CR4 Carbon Road Bike - 11 Speed Ultegra:

After 13 month`s and over 3,000 miles of riding with this bike, I couldn`t be happier. Excellent machine that handles well and climbs well. My advise though if you purchase. Find a good bike mechanic at your LBS to inspect, assemble, lube adjust when putting together for the first time. I would also change the bottom bracket for a better one. After I changed my BB the bike had a much better feel in the drivetrain.

Comments about Nashbar CR4 Carbon Road Bike - 11 Speed Ultegra:

I've rode the bike long enough to hopefully write a helpful review. For perspective - avg. 16.6-16.8mph avg. ride range 12-40miles.
Out of the box, I could not get enough. With some minor adjustments for fit purposes, it was dialed in quickly. Purchased Shimano Carbon Fiber Pedals which snap, crackled, and popped. After numerous retightening, sound almost vanished. However, the crankcase is grinding fiercely. Not sure the problem and will have to visit the LBS for diagnosis. It started as a slight crackle, but has progressed to an all out, pitchy, grinding noise. Not a comfortable feeling considering it's the main torque area of the bike. I will rite the folks at Nashbar for direction. I prey it is not a serious issue......meaning serious money to correct! The bike was a bargain-I get that, but my expectations could be unmanageable with this one!
I would recommend the deal, but with caution.

Comments about Nashbar CR4 Carbon Road Bike - 11 Speed Ultegra:

I am really satisfied with this bike. It is amazing what you get for the money. (My other road bike cost 3 times as much!) This bike is light, comfortable and fairly fast. One warning is that before you ride it, you go over the entire bike and tighten up everything. I had a loose bottom bracket and rear derailleur hanger. What is cool is that it is a beautiful frame but it has no markings. People are guessing that it is a Cervelo, Orbea, Giant etc. My answer is that it is from the Skunk Works because it looks stealthy.

Comments about Nashbar CR4 Carbon Road Bike - 11 Speed Ultegra:

I have been riding for about a year (25-35mi rides average) and wanted to upgrade to a carbon frame. This bike was so affordable for the quality you get- the simple mat-black frame is very sleek as well. The Ultegra components are top-notch and the carbon-fiber frame is so lightweight. Handling is smooth and it takes corners well. The wheels could be a little lighter, but they are still great. Also, I don't like the racing seat, but that's just personal preference. I've only had better and better rides with this bike and it climbs like a cloud on the mountains- so easy. Overall, more than happy!!!

Comments about Nashbar CR4 Carbon Road Bike - 11 Speed Ultegra:

Received this bike 3 days after placing order (Expedited shipping - +$20), on Friday just before the long Labor Day weekend. Assembly was a piece of cake and I was ready to ride in less than an hour. Got in 200 miles on it in the 4 days I have had it over the holiday weekend. No disappointment here after many months of reviewing which options I had to upgrade my current bike. When they listed the CR4 discounted $300 less than what they had been selling it at, and they offered a one-day 20% off coupon, my decision was made for me. There have been NO surprises and the bike is exactly as I expected from reading the reviews and info that Nashbar has on their site. One of the two end caps for the handle bars has a little bit of the chrome finish rubbed off from shipping, otherwise, not a mark on the bike and it was packaged well. I adjusted the barrel adjuster for the rear derailleur and the rear gears are now flawless after my first couple of rides. The front needs a bit more work as it is dragging just a bit when I am out in the smallest rings on the rear.

The frame is unfinished, just as was indicated, I don't mind it and maybe in a few years, I might just freshen it up a bit with some paint, but for now I am fine with the stealth-like appearance.

Could not me more satisfied with this purchase, definitely feel like I got a deal with this group set, as compared to all of the other options I explored before deciding to buy this bike from Nashbar.

Comments about Nashbar CR4 Carbon Road Bike - 11 Speed Ultegra:

I been looking for a carbon frame for a while, to find one that was equipped with a 11 speed ultegra for under 2000 was unheard of. I did wait for the 20 percent coupon so I came out to be less then 1700 shipped. I didn't try the saddle that it came with I swapped it with the nashbar fr1, something I was already riding. The first and most important upgrade would be to get ride of the tires. The stock Hutchinson equinox tires are really bad, my first 10 rides I flatted 10 times. I switched to conti gatorskins and no more flats. I'm 5'8" and bought the 52 cm and it fits fine.

All components are excellent except for brakes which I replaced. The frame is not painted; appears to be raw carbon which is ok for me because of the overall value.
Only minor tweaking needed on derailers to fine tune shifting. I really like the Schmano shifters. Superb value.
