Nashbar Single-Speed Cyclocross Bike

Finally a single-speed version of one of Nashbar's cyclocross bike that will help you dish out generous servings of your chro-mo mojo to the competition.

The Nashbar Single-Speed Cyclocross Bike has an abuse-proof chromoly frame and fork at its heart and soul. And while this steel beauty may pack more grams than its more svelte aluminum and carbon fiber brethren, what it truly inspires is confidence -- confidence in the handling, confidence in ride quality, and the confidence that when you hit the deck (and if you're doing 'cross right that fact is inevitable) your steel rig will still be in one piece and ready to rumble when you pick yourself up. The amount of punishment this frameset can withstand is simply astounding.

While some 'cross bikes take the super purist route and provide no water bottle cage braze-ons, we, on the other hand, believe differently. 'Cross bikes are the true all-arounders of the cycling world and just because it may not be de rigueur for world-class racing steads to have their thoroughbred lines blighted with braze-ons this steel stallion is intended to be ridden, and ridden a lot, in non-racing environs. And you know what? You're going to get thirsty. So we highly recommend slapping a cage on and heading out for all kinds of adventure. Come race day, just take that cage off (if you even so desire) and you're good to go.

Component-wise, feast your eyes on the slew of lightweight aluminum goodies that make this rig such an extraordinary value. Being a single-speed, though, there's not that much actually there -- these are the ultimate in simplicity after all -- but you'll find the aluminum crankset, and its 46T chainring, to be a super clean, reliable selection. The aluminum bars, stem and seatpost are all workman-like, too, in their utter reliability, simplicity, and durability.

In the vein of simplicity and reliability, nothing beats a solid pair of cantilever brakes to modulate your speed and these Tektro gems will treat you right. There's ample clearance to keep your wheels spinning freely in slime and grime and there's no annoying mushiness at all when you pull the levers -- just crisp, firm action. Swapping out pads is a snap, too, with their cartridge holders.

Alex alloy rims are nigh indestructible and the Kenda Small Block Eight 'cross tires are an awesome option for those with speed on the brain. Optimized for fast acceleration and hard-pack surfaces, they just rip it up when you apply power to the pedals as if you've got a small block V8 for legs.

Have we mentioned what a versatile all-arounder the Nashbar Single-Speed Cyclocross Bike is? As is you've got the goods to duke it out for podium honors on the 'cross course or simply head off-road for adventure and hijinks. Not one to be pigeonholed, however, this bike also makes a head-turning city or commuter bike as well--just sticker it up, maybe swap out the knobs for fatty slicks, and start assaulting the urban scape. But no matter what you do, we guarantee there'll be a mile-wide smile on your face.

  • Durable, bombproof chromoly frame and fork are ready for the nastiest of courses...or the crustiest of city streets
  • Single speed drive train is maintenance-free, just rinse it off and it will run perfectly
  • Lightweight frame, fork, and components make for easier running with the bike over your back
  • Cantilever brakes leave plenty of room for shedding mud and debris without binding
  • Knobby cyclocross tires give you plenty of bite in even the gooiest of mud

Most bike shop bike cost too much for what you get, and most department store bikes are total high tinsel steel garbage, but this chromoly beauty is right in the middle. I'm totally sold on this bike.

Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed Cyclocross Bike:

I was looking for a SS bike to throw into the mix, so did some shopping around. I kept coming back to this one because I loved the stripped down look and the gearing seemed good for flattish terrain. Plus the price could not be ignored, it truly is the best deal out there right now.

Delivery to my door in just a couple days. Assembly out of the box took less than half an hour. The wheels needed a couple slight adjustments but they were reasonably true. I swapped out the saddle since it wasn't great, and threw some SPD's on instead of the platform pedals that came with it but that was it in terms of upgrades. I'll probably change out the brake pads soon, but the rest of the set up on the bike is great.

This bike has quickly become my go to. It's a blast to ride and is so smooth and quiet no one will hear you coming! If you are at all thinking about buying this I recommend you do because it's even better than I thought it would be.

Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed Cyclocross Bike:

This bike exceeded my expectations. I've been researching affordable (for me) SS bikes for over a year and finally pulled the trigger on this bike. Durably built, utilitarian components, and really nice looking. The only con is the brakes. Other reviewers have mentioned it...and they are right....they are poor! Looks like it is a matter of making a few simple adjustments, so no big deal. Bike is relatively light. 24 pounds even (as shipped, 58cm). Some extra specs that aren't mentioned (for those considering this bike)...170mm crank, 1/2 x 1/8 chain, and the stem is a 4-bolt rather than the 2-bolt pictured. Very happy with my purchase and can see myself putting in a lot of miles on it!!

Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed Cyclocross Bike:

Bought this bike primarily as a commuter/around town beater, so my review will not include anything about its merits as a cross bike. The gearing is fine for flat ground, easily 20ish MPH at a comfortable cadence. Frame and tires are great for rough roads, soaks up bumps and potholes easily, performs well on gravel. It's about 30 pounds with fenders, which the frame leaves ample room for. My commute is 32 miles round trip and it performs admirably.

Assembly was simple, wheels were true.

Pedals and saddle are garbage, replaced them immediately. Brakes aren't great, but they get the job done alright...skeptical about how they'd perform in "oh no!" moments. Will probably replace. Wish the stem was slightly longer, doesn't give much option for a more upright position. May replace in the future.

Overall this bike is fine for commuting and around town. You will probably replace components to get it exactly as you'd like it, so the price is slightly misleading. I'd recommend picking it up on sale.

Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed Cyclocross Bike:

For the money awesome bike. I got it on sale at 20% off. I was looking for a single speed for road training and to check out cyclocross. It's perfect. I'm no bike guru but I wouldn't recommend to someone with no mechanical skills, the brakes needed adjustments, the saddle looked so uncomfortable I switched it before I even sat on it, and just today I got some noise from the BB.(150 miles on it) I feel all of that is expected from this price range bike.it's quickly becoming my favorite bike and least expensive out of 5.

Nice SSCX for the price and looks really cool. Great for commuting or dabbling in CX racing with a change in gearing. The bike is heavy but expected from steel and the price. The steel frame is a comfortable ride, especially on the road. The brakes definitely are the weakest link. It takes a lot of effort for a hard stop. May change out to mini-v brakes or try better quality pads. Really fun bike for the money.

Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed Cyclocross Bike:

Very happy with this bike. I'm in no way a bike pro, so I wasn't looking for anything competition grade, but something that I could use to get around town for work or social purposes instead of taking the car. It's worked great so far. Town is flat for the most part, so a single speed isn't a problem (and it makes for less maintenance), and it can be changed to fixed gear if desired. Roads can be rough at times so the thicker cyclocross tires are useful. You can tell the components are not top grade, but for the price, it's a great value and you can always upgrade with the money you save (I haven't needed to yet). It's not a bike you can pick up with one finger, but it's actually pretty light and mobile. I like the nondescript design that has no names or markings on it, and the dark blue is a classy look. I would prefer less chrome and more matte, but it's not a deal breaker.

Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed Cyclocross Bike:

I've had this bike for about a month now. I've been doing 10-15 mile rides around town hitting some hilly terrain. It rides great and was easy to assemble. I did buy new pedals and a new saddle. The pedals that came with the bike were too small for my feet (size 14) and I wanted a more comfortable seat (I got the Nashbar SC1 comfort saddle for 30 bucks - awesome saddle). All in all I'm very happy with this bike and I would definitely recommend to a friend.
