Nashbar Fluid Trainer
Bike trainers can get pretty elaborate and pretty pricey, but many cyclists just like to set it up and knock out a ride. Queue the Nashbar Fluid Trainer to experience the ultimate marriage of value, simplicity, and performance. Nashbar's new fluid resistance unit uses an internal flywheel system guaranteeing smooth, consistent delivery of a life-like pedal stroke. The bigger the gear and the more RPMs you generate, the harder the workout. Simple. Just as important, it's quiet enough that you can enjoy whatever media you prefer while training without having to jack up the decibels to overcome the trainer's noise. Plus, easy setup and teardown (with zero cords, cables, or power to worry about) makes it ideal not just for in-home workouts but bring it to a race, too, for the perfect means to get warmed-up and ready to rock.
  • Internal flywheel/fluid system provides excellent resistance and life-like pedal stroke
  • Super simple setup great for bringing along for race warm-ups, travelling, moving around the house
  • Rear quick release skewer included to ensure your bike attaches perfectly
  • Rubber feet on bottom of unit prevent slippage and floor scuffing

    Comments about Nashbar Fluid Trainer:

Bought for personal use, to help maintain through the winter months, and help rehab after an injury. I was a little leery about a previous review that described plastic construction...not true...the unit is sturdy steel, but with a plastic non-structural overlay. Not difficult set-up. Holds my Tri bike fine. I skipped both the front wheel riser (I use a simple 2x4 instead) and sweat bikini (really?). Low noise claims are true - TV volume does not need to be as high as with treadmill. Only downside is the variability of the resistance...it seems the fluid viscosity in the 'Made in Italy' unit actually increases with heat, and it seems to occur in a consistent 2-step fashion. No worries, though, I just drop a gear, and I'm good...or pretend I just hit a hill and make my workout tougher. Not at all a problem for users who are a little flexible, especially frugal ones.

    Comments about Nashbar Fluid Trainer:

So after opening the box I was on the fence about this trainer. In the pictures it looks like its metal and heavy IE well built. But after opening it I found out that its plastic. For some reason I must have missed that In the specs and in other reviews. So I was all about to return it thinking it was cheap. But I decided to put it together and see how it worked. At first I thought it was kind of weak and moved around too much. My old trainer is big and heavy and does not move at all when riding on it. this does have some flex when riding, but its really minimal. I have to say that after moving it around a few times the plastic body makes it easy to move and store. It only took about 10 minutes to put together and have it up and being used. I like the design and its very quiet compared to my old fluid trainer. It is also very versatile, I'm able to put my 29r MTB on it as well as my 700c road bike. I got this model because of the quick release features, and I'm not disappointed. They make it easy and fast to set up and use. over all I would give this trainer a 8 out of 10. But the real test will come in when I've used it a few years. so don't let the out of box plastic ness of it throw you off, it seems like it's a nice set up and this model is always on sale.

    Comments about Nashbar Fluid Trainer:

This is my first trainer so I have nothing to compare it with. But here is my feedback after using it for about 14 workouts. I am using a 2007 Cannondale 700R roadbike by the way. I ride between 5k to 20k per session

    1) The set up was very easy

    2) I am happy with the fluid resistance. It works well and lets you get into a nice cadence no problem. You do nothing except hit your desired cadence and if you need to shift up a gear for more resistance you can. Very smooth feel

    3) One thing that is different then riding a real bike is that you cant really stand and hammer on this. At least I can't. It feels very awkward. So i had to switch to a seat with more padding when i'm using the trainer due to crotch numbness after about 7 miles. Since you cant ever really stand the blood flow gets cut off for me personally on a typical low profile road seat (i am wearing padded bike shorts btw). After I switched it over to my mtb seat that has a bit more padding and a different design I am not experiencing this anymore (yes it looks a bit weird, but it works lol). Just keep that in mind.

Overall I am very happy with the product. It is made in Italy and seems really well made and durable. It is very competitively priced compared to some of the other fluid trainers out there. Maybe those have a better feel, or more expensive parts for an experienced rider, but I just like to keep in shape and this fits the bill perfect. By the time I am done with a ride I am sweating buckets.

            Comments about Nashbar Fluid Trainer:

I purchased this trainer a few months ago and use it 3-4 times per week. When starting each ride, the trainer takes approx. 5 minutes to warm up; before it's warm, there is barely any resistence, then the resistence randomly kickes in. It works relatively well once warm, but I would suggest spending more money on a better trainer.

I use it with the Sufferfest videos to stay in shape when it's too cold to ride. It's not too loud with my road tires and it kicks my butt three to five times a week. Can't ask for anything more.

              Fluid vs Magnetic

                  Comments about Nashbar Fluid Trainer:

I have two magnetic trainers, one with watts etc. and rollers. I wondered how the fluid trainer would be. I wanted a different "feel." At the same speed with the same cadence, the resistance varies much as encountering a small rise on the road. I cannot figure out why, but it adds an interesting challenge. I would not recommend it if you are obsessive about so many minutes at a particular level of resistance and keep records for that -- it seems too inconsistent. But, It does give a good work out. In general it is what I was looking for: a different feel and a good workout. I also got it on sale, which helped.

                    Comments about Nashbar Fluid Trainer:

I am a beginner rider, married to an avid cyclist who has been trying to get me on a road bike for years. I agreed to start by spending time this winter on a trainer - he has a high-end Cycle Ops trainer which I wasn't willing to spend the money on as a 'try it' venture.

So as a novice, here are my obersvations:
                    - this trainer is loud compared to a higher-end trainer
                    - it is a good build quality
                    - it does fold and store easily, although I have room to leave mine set-up, so I don't do this regularly.

Overall, it is a good value for someone looking for a budget-priced bike trainer.

I wanted a trainer to help get me through this winter during my triathlon training. I am a student so I don't have a lot to spend on top of the line brand name trainers, but didn't want something that I would need to replace in a year or two. So far this trainer has been great. I'm a bigger guy and it is very stable and easy to use. This is my first trainer so I don't really have much to compare it to but it does everything I hoped it would and, as a regular cyclist, I have no big complaints.
