Comparing to Speedplay X/2

Comments about Shimano PD-R550 Road Pedals:

Been using Speedplay X/2 stainless steel pedals because I can clip in from either side. In five years the spring broke 3 times and the grip on my cleat was so weak I popped out whenever I cranked hard and they had no adjustability. Switched to Shimano PD-R550 and am highly satisfied. Fully adjustable, I can tighten them up whenever, but even on the loosest setting they feel really secure and there is no threat of my popping off the pedal. It did take a bit of practice to get used to the different method of clipping in, but I now find it as easy as the Speedplays were. Also the metal Speedplays needed periodic lubrication, leaving the pedals and cleats very messy. These Shimanos are clean, dry and look like they will last a long time.

Comments about Shimano PD-R550 Road Pedals:

I have most recently been using Speedplay pedals and found that I was getting grit and dirt in the cleats a little too often, so when my most recent pair wore to the point of less efficiency, I decided to switch to the Shimanos. Thus far I have found them very reliable, easy to clip in to and very good at transferring my power to the cranks. I only wish they were 2-sided like the Speedplays, but that is not a big negative.

Comments about Shimano PD-R550 Road Pedals:

I recently transitioned from a MTB with Shimano PD-M324 SPD Dual Platform Pedals, to the R550's on a carbon road bike (Mekk 2.0). I had the pedals installed on the bike when I had it assembled, and cleats installed on the Shimano R088 at the same time. The pedals and cleats were an easy transition from the M324. I have no problems getting the cleats in and out, and with the large cleat and pedal base, its much simpler that the SPD cleats and pedals. The platform give you enough room to rest/place the front of your foot on, while also giving you enough base to push on when climbing those hills, or when the need to dig in arises.

Comments about Shimano PD-R550 Road Pedals:

Pedals work great, easy to use and comfortable, with one big problem. In the past 9 months, the pin that holds the spring-loaded rear part of the pedal has backed out on two different pedals. First time the main body of the pedal actually broke. Nashbar replaced the pedals, but now the pin is backing out on one of the replacement pedals. I was able to ride home, very carefully as I was not clipped in, and pushed the pin back in at home with the right tools. Very disappointed in the durablility of this pedal.

Comments about Shimano PD-R550 Road Pedals:

I am an old school cyclist and many years ago I had made the switch to MTB pedals for my MTB/hybrid bike and tried to use the same type for my road bikes as well. I thought they were as good as it gets, however, I was wrong. Finally I switched to proper road pedals and what a difference. Now I can pull as much as I push with confidence. This particular pedals seem to be great values as I cannot mention any weaknesses for the time being.

Comments about Shimano PD-R550 Road Pedals:

These are the best pedals I've ever had, but I've only had a pair of Nashbar brand pedals to compare them to. I've put 50 miles or so on them so far.

The main body material is plastic. I'm not sure how well they will handle a crash. It doesn't seem weak, but it is plastic.

I am very satisfied with these pedals so far. My cleats clip in with a very audible click. The pedals hold the cleat well. There is a fair amount of side to side play (that is, I can rotate my heal a bit), but this is appreciated.

                  I would definitely buy again.

I grew up Mtn. biking and used Speedplay frog clipless peddles with lots of rotation before unclipping, so that was important. These offer enough play for a road peddle to keep my knees and ankles happy!

Comments about Shimano PD-R550 Road Pedals:

This pedal definitely performs it's intended purpose. However when you clip out the pedal rests in such a way that it's more upside down than right side up and requires you to use the toe of your shoe to line it up in order to clip in. It seems they could have done a much better job balancing the pedals for easy clip in.
