    Comments about Nashbar Townie Basket:

These bags fold up very nearly Flat. They stay out of the way like that until you need them.

The attachment system is both simple and clever. Rubber coated metal hooks go on your rack, then velcro straps keep them from ever bouncing loose.

I also like the handles. They are not in the way on the bike and are very handy carrying the bag through farmer's markets.

    Comments about Nashbar Townie Basket:

This bag is perfect for short runs to grocery store (the built in side straps hold a champagne bottle perfectly!), commuting to work, and trips to the Farmers Market! Deep enough that items don't bounce out on bumpy streets/sidewalks, just big enough to hold all you need for cycling to work.
The only confusing part was how it mounts-this hangs off the side of a carrier like a small saddle bag.

    Comments about Nashbar Townie Basket:

If you have only one bike to handle everything, from casual rides to errands, these half-height Townie folding baskets are perfect for dropping in those full sized brown paper sacks still used by Braum's and a few grocery stores. Or they'll hold four filled plastic bags (or more partially filled bags). And they're fine for loose items like loaves of bread, egg cartons, even jugs or boxes of cat litter.

Unlike most metal folding baskets, I can quickly attach or detach the Townies as needed. The built-in bungee cord hooks into an eyelet on your rear rack. Lift and hook the vinyl coated metal hooks over the top rail of the rear rack. Done. Just as quick to detach if you prefer to take the bags inside the store for security or convenience. The panniers include three Velcro-type tabs to wrap around the rear rack top rail for extra security.

The material and construction offer a good compromise between utility with light weight, low bulk when not in use and quick attachment/detachment ease. The material appears to be lightweight ripstop nylon, reinforced with sheets of fairly rigid plastic on the bottom and inside wall. A simple metal hinge attached to the plastic sheets hold the baskets open or closed.

Folded up or opened, there's enough room on top of the rear rack between the Townie Baskets to accommodate a narrow trunk bag. Or carry a cargo net and you can stack a big jug of cat litter, bulky packs of toilet paper or anything similarly sized between the baskets.

There's no lid and the bags have no drains, so these are intended for fair weather use only. And the lightweight fabric probably won't hold up to tossing in a bunch of loose tools.

I rode several miles in a 15 mph headwind with gusts up to 25 mph and felt less drag from the empty, folded Townie baskets than I did with my usual large trunk bag. Only strong side gusts reminded me there was anything attached to the rear rack. So the Townies won't feel like a drag when your day includes a recreational ride before filling the bags with groceries.

Too bad it isn't sold as 2 pieces I would have given a 5 star. That would have been perfect!

I bought one basket for my son and he liked it so much he asked for a second. Now he has a Nashbar trunk for his gear and the baskets take the textbook weight off of his back. They fold down nice and flat when not in use.

            Comments about Nashbar Townie Basket:

I've only used this for three days, but I'll never go back to strapping my backpack to my rack. I used to spend 10 minutes every morning putting stuff in my backpack and trying to balance and strap the bag to my rack with bungees. Now I simply throw stuff in the basket and head off.

The basket has impressive volume. I've taken a package to USPS, grocery bags, thick jacket, clothes, etc. It's a little small for me to fit my massive backpack into it, but a smaller backpack, laptop, or messenger bag would be easy to throw in.

For my purposes (commuting, occasionally running errands, etc) this is great. I prefer it to panniers as I really don't have to pack it, I can just throw whatever bag I want to use into the basket. I got this over the Wald folding baskets as I like to ride my roadbike recreationally as well, it's nice to just pull this off in like 30 seconds without tools if I don't want the extra weight. It's also much lighter than those metal baskets.

One concern I have is that after my ride I noticed that some of the velcro straps were open, and I could have sworn I'd attached them properly.
