Nashbar Waterproof Front Panniers
Discovering that the rain has infiltrated your bags is like getting smacked in the face with a wet beach towel. Avoid this cycling tragedy with Nashbar's Waterproof Front Panniers. They are made with rugged 400 denier nylon which is scuff, puncture, and tear resistant, and treated with EPU coating on the inside which seals the deal--literally. A roll-top closure makes it impossible for water to work its way in...you pretty much have to throw these panniers in a river to get your stuff wet. With 14 liters of capacity, you can certainly stow some stuff.

For serious all-weather touring capacity, we recommend pairing these with Nashbar's Rear Waterproof Panniers which are a larger version of this item.

  • Durable 400 denier outer material w/EPU coating is ultra tough and totally waterproof
  • Folding "roll-top" closure keeps rain out completely
  • 14 liters of storage each carries quite a load
  • Mounts easily to racks
  • Reflective Logos on side and front
  • Sold as a pair

Comments about Nashbar Waterproof Front Panniers:

In 1999 I used an earlier version of this pannier to go across the country. The panniers served me well for years - more than a decade with light use after my cross-country ride.) Eventually the water-proofing delaminated, which was absolutely expected with as much wear as I gave them. I ordered another pair in ~2012, and they were pretty much the same model as the one I went cross-country with and they are awesome. The roll top clips together on top of the bag, and then a cap pulls over the top and clips down with cinch straps.

Recently, I ordered another pair because my son is old enough to carry some gear. He uses these as rear panniers on his 20" IslaBike. (And at age 7 he looks like a perfectly seasoned bike-packer.)

The main reason I prefer the older model is that I could tuck my spare sandals or rain coat above the roll top and beneath the cap. My clothes and sleeping bag stayed dry in the rolled up pannier, but the wet and dirty stuff was easily accessible under the clipped down cap right where I could grab it quickly or stash it after a storm.

That said, I still recommended these panniers to a friend recently. They are just light, simple, and 100% functional, and a great value if you need waterproof.

Personally, I recommend the waterproof fronts for clothes and sleeping bags, which must stay dry, and then I use panniers that aren't waterproof in the back for food and other gear. I mean, who wants to try to clean leaked Peanut Butter or stove fuel out of a waterproof pannier - or have your tools poke a hole in them? There's just a lot of stuff for a tour that really doesn't have to stay dry.

So, for the stuff that DOES want to be dry, these little front panniers are awesome.

Really cheap feeling and very thin layer. Definitely feels like any little nag or rub is going to tear these things wide open. Save your money and buy something decent. Ortlieb or something.

Comments about Nashbar Waterproof Front Panniers:

I bought these to compliment my current Ortlieb rear panniers at 4x the price. The Nashbar panniers are smaller but have a similar build quality. The mounting hardware is quite simple with a hook on the top which hangs over your rack. Note that it doesn't clasp or fasten; it is just held by the gravitational pull downward and with a bungee cord which hooks to the bottom of your rack.
Simple and effective but probably not quite as secure as hardware which latches.

I've ridden several hundred miles on trail or road with these and I've had no problems. I look forward to longer touring trips and I have every expectations that they will work well for my needs.

If I were mountain biking or expecting to have a very rough ride, I would either look for another pannier which has a more secure locking system or I would add some additional straps.

Comments about Nashbar Waterproof Front Panniers:

I bought these because of the reviews and the fact that they were waterproof. When they arrived I went to try them out on my Surly front rack, the elastic strap that holds the hook pulled out of the retainer first time. Maybe this was just a rare defect and not indicative of the product. I returned for a refund and purchased a different brand.

Comments about Nashbar Waterproof Front Panniers:

Although smaller, these are fantastic for a short touring trip. Material seems durable, but haven't used them enough to test it. Mounting hardware is essentially a bungee with rubber coated clips - it isn't the strongest, but the hardware will be simple to replace (with something stronger) when/if it breaks.

Comments about Nashbar Waterproof Front Panniers:

I used these on a two week tour around Lake Michigan. I didn't ride through heavy rain for prolonged periods, but there were frequent showers along the way. These panniers were indeed waterproof and the attachment system was secure and fairly easy to mount and remove (I used them with a Planet Bike Eco Rack). All the buckles and straps held securely and the mounting points for rear lights are a nice touch. If not for the plastic coating on one of the rack hooks wearing through, I'd give them a perfect rating. Make no mistake; these are wonderful panniers for the price. If you know how to pack lightly, consider two sets, one each for front and back of the bike. Heartily recommended!

Comments about Nashbar Waterproof Front Panniers:

Bought these front bags for a bike tour but I couldn't find a front rack that fit my bike. While the search continues, my wife uses them on her back rack for going to the store. They hold quite a bit for small bags, quality seems equal to my more expensive name brand bags and I like how folds and buckles to keep the rain out. The price was half of what other brands are so that's a huge plus. My only complaint is the bottom hook likes to lay flat and it was too closed making it nearly impossible to connect it to the bottom part of the rack. I had to use pliers to open the hook by a few MM making it easier to work with. Nashbar needs to find a better hook that sticks out and catches the rack with ease.

Comments about Nashbar Waterproof Front Panniers:

I used these panniers in the spring of 2015 on the GAP trail from Cumberland, MD to Pittsburg, PA. They worked well keeping my gear supported and dry. I didn't worry about packing gear in plastic bags as I had to do for my rear panniers which have worn off their waterproof lining. I liked that these kept the weight of my gear low and let me evenly distribute it along the bike.

It was a little inconvenient after accessing to roll the opening closed then strap it down and clip it to create the water-tight seal. As opposed to a zipper or top flap. But I was confident the seal would keep out the water.

I then used these panniers in the summer for my ride on the C&O towpath from Cumberland,MD to Washington DC. It isn't a smooth path. These held up to the pounding without any damage and without popping off my front rack with about 12 lbs in each side. The section of the path from Harper's Ferry to DC was puddles and mud due to heavy rain the night before. The panniers kept everything dry. I ultimately didn't mind the inconvience of rolling them closed to keep out the water.
