Giro Prolight Road Helmet - 2014 Exclusive Colors

With the Giro Prolight Road Helmet, the operative word is "Pro." Wait...no...the operative word is "light." Well now you get to have it both ways. The culmination of an exhaustive ground-up design and engineering process - paying homage to Giro's original Prolight that set the standard for modern lightweight helmets in 1985 - Giro has once again re-defined what an ultra-lightweight helmet can be.

This helmet is a ridiculously lean 193 grams, and has pro features like Giro's Xstatic padding inserts for maximum comfort, 25 vents for maximum cooling, awesome graphics for maximum coolness, plus the Roc Loc SL elastic fitting system that keeps the helmet hugging your head comfortably all ride long. From time to time while out on the bike you may check your reflection in a window because quite simply this minimalist wonder gives the sensation of having nothing on your head at all.

  • Molded layers provide enhanced impact resistance
  • Lightweight construction weighs only 193 grams
  • 25 vents channel air in and then out for maximum cooling power
  • Roc Loc SL retention system self-adjusts to provide a comfortable, secure fit
  • Xstatic foam padded inserts keep you comfy for the long haul
  • Italian-made, featherweight webbing helps keep this helmet crazy light

Comments about Giro Prolight Road Helmet - 2014 Exclusive Colors:

I bought this to replace my aging Giro Atmos. The Prolight weights in at 80g lighter than the Atmos, and while I havent worn it for a long ride or a competitive ride yet, I find it nice and light but I dont find the lighter weight necessarily adds to overall comfort. What I do find is that the helmet fits comfortably and has the right amount of adjustment to make it work for me. I especially like the fact that the chin strap is permanently stitched to eliminate the plastic adjustment below the ear, which I always had problems adjusting.

Comments about Giro Prolight Road Helmet - 2014 Exclusive Colors:

This is my second. I was delighted to find a replacement. That should say it all. It's comfortable, durable, and safe.
I'll start with the safety issue. I recently suffered a serious crash - ran over slippery objects haphazardly left in bike lane. Fell abruptly to my left, fracturing my clavicle, scapula, and ribs. In the ambulance, the EMT asked if I hit my head. I said no, but he took off my Prolight and saw the scuff on the outside. We then saw the cracks in the liner. Without the helmet, I would have had at least a concussion. A thanks to GIro.
I had that helmet for six years and thousands of miles. Light? Yes, there is no helmet lighter. Well ventilated? Absolutely. I noted the huge difference from my previous helmet. Durability? I wondered when I first got it, since it has the wide cloth elastic strap on the back and wondered if it would degrade over time. It still looked like new.
Adjustable? Yes, There are two plastic bars that attach to the straps, which can be moved to three different spots. This will allow for a skull cap, which I did use.

Comments about Giro Prolight Road Helmet - 2014 Exclusive Colors:

Before buying the Pro Light helmet my neck would get sore and tired on longer rides. This is the lightest helmet on the market and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! The helmet fits well, is comfortable, and has proved itself TWICE in falls where my head hit the pavement at speed. I'm on my third Pro light helmet and I highly recommend.

Comments about Giro Prolight Road Helmet - 2014 Exclusive Colors:

I got this 2 days before leaving home to race an Ironman in Europe. My head measured exactly 23" (multiple measurements by several people) so i ordered the medium (up to 23.5"). It was too tight at a point on the back of my head and 2 points on the forehead. Using a razor blade, I was able to shave off a total of about 1/8" and then it fit perfectly. Felt like a custom molded fit for my head. Was so light, even after 4 hours I could barely notice it was on. Ventilation was great as well.

Comments about Giro Prolight Road Helmet - 2014 Exclusive Colors:

I've had excellent performance from several of these over the years and am sorry to hear Giro has discontinued this model. A number of reviewers point to the elastic strap in back and say the helmet is not adjustable. While it's true you can't adjust the strap itself, you can make the fit larger or smaller by moving the point where the rear band assembly attaches to the helmet. Simply pull the fitting that attaches the rear band assembly out of the hole into which it attaches and move it up or back to another hole. Admittedly, it's not as easy as turning a dial. You don't however, have that extra weight. Plus, the elastic strap is a great place to hang your sunglasses when you're riding in the shade or stopping for that latte.

Comments about Giro Prolight Road Helmet - 2014 Exclusive Colors:

I have ridden a long time and weight is normally not a primary concern, but after a bad spill a couple years ago I have problems with my neck on longer rides. This helmet does help because of the lower weight. True it is not as adjustable as most are but if you are like me then it is perfect. I own two and love them. If you are on the fence try one on first because not all helmets fit all head shapes.

The helmet is light weight but it has an elastic band instead of adjustment knob. I sent it back and bought a heavier helmet that has a way to adjust it in case you want to wear something underneath it. Weight is not everything.
