Comments about Northwave Extreme Tech Mountain Shoes:

This is my second pair of NW bike shoes. I purchased a pair for road bike and have enjoyed them, primarily because I could cinch them snugly around my skinny feet. I ride MTB much more frequently struggle to find proper fitting shoes, especially in the width. Velcro and ratchet enclosure systems on nearly all brands do not provide enough length to enable snug fits. NW road shoes are excellent. These NW MTB shoes provide stiff power transfer, but not excellent fit. Their ratchet system differs vastly from the velcro enclosures of my NW road shoes and that is why. SO if you suffer from skinny feet like me, do try NW shoes, but choose the velcro strap systems only, not the ratchet system closures.

fit well - easy to adjust on the fly - seem to shed the elements pretty well - cannot judge durability yet, too new, but other Northwave shoes have lasted

Comments about Northwave Extreme Tech Mountain Shoes:

shoes get a 4.5 as they are a bit small for stated size. Nashbar gets a 5.0+ for immediately exchanging for 1 size larger (46 to a 47). although a MTB shoe I use as a "walkable" road bike shoe. very comfortable, very light, best price.

Another comment from a longtime NW user. I have 8 pairs of NW shoes,... all the same size MTB and Road. I normally wear 43EU shoes with Superfeet. These were just barely tolerable with normal socks and NO insoles at all in 43. I ended up ordering a full size up at 44. Toe box is not as large either as std NW shoes are, fits more like a Sidi in terms of width.

Very good shoe with excellent closure system. True fit and comfortable right out of the box. Insert is a little light given the quality of the shoe although easily remedied.

After receiving the shoes I had to go one EU full size larger then what the sizing chart showed me. Nashbar was excellent and very helpfull with guiding me through the return process and did not charge me any extra shipping/handling fees. Other then that little blip all is good.

Comments about Northwave Extreme Tech Mountain Shoes:

I'm size US13 and size 47 was the right fit. 46 felt too tight...not snug, but tight! 47 allows the shoe to remin snug and minimize movement of the foot while pedaling.

The latching mechanism is quite nice...fast and lots of adjustments. The top strap can be shifted to allow it to sit right on top of the angle. The rotory lace allow for fine tune adjustments as well. I wear these exclusively for cycling class (I teach parttime) and they exude professionalism. I reserve my lesser quality Shimano's for outdoor riding.

The sole is unbelievable stiff and I did notice an uptick in power generation while pedaling. Not that it was 'easier' to pedal, but I felt my pedal stroke was more produtive using the same energy. The shoe breathes well but I still recommend using odor balls when not in use.

My only concern is if the laces were to tear as I don't see a way to replace them...however they are made of some super strong fabic used in sailing so I expect them to last for a while. I got 4 years out of my entry level Shimano shoes (size 49 in those)...hope to get at least 4 years out of these terrific shoes.

Comments about Northwave Extreme Tech Mountain Shoes:

These are great shoes! This my second pair of NW, at this point I'm not sure I can ever go with another brand. They're light weight, nicely designed and comfortable. I'm primarily a mountain biker, but will use these with my road bike as well. They're not overly vented to let wetness in, but vented just enough to let the hotness out. The buckle ratchet is nice and sturdy and dial tension system is smooth!

One downside is that they look so dang good, I'm going to hate myself for the first time I submerge them in mud or scratch them up riding through brush and sticks. I'm sad about that already.

Anyways, one shopping tip to anyone looking to spend good money for excellent shoes: don't shy away from carbon soles for the sake of "if you have to walk, they won't be as comfortable." I probably have to walk more than others, but there is no way that the few minutes of walking out of a few hour ride would justify NOT having carbon soles. Spend the extra money, well worth it. I have no doubt I will get 4-5 years out of these shoes at a minimum.

These are stiff, light and have good looks. Northwave, well done!
