Comments about Garmin Edge Touring Plus GPS Cycling Computer:

This tracker has great functions for exploring then getting home, or creating courses on computer and downloading. For occasional interval training rides I would like to look at the display without having to touch it first to turn on the backlight. The screen contrast without backlight is very poor. If backlight is left on, battery life is reduced significantly (about -20% per hour in my experience). In direct sunlight it is difficult to see small display fonts and maps even with backlight on maximum. I haven't found a way yet to see all the undisplayed data available in the middle of a ride without stopping the timer and saving. Garmin tech support was outstanding in sorting out Windows 10 browser compatibility issues for Garmin Connect. The manual is minimal and lacking in description of usage.

Comments about Garmin Edge Touring Plus GPS Cycling Computer:

Took awhile to learn to navigate the computer itself, partly because I am an old guy. Once I figured out how it worked with Garmin connect, and once I made a number of blunders, I just love the device. It downloads courses, I can make up my own, it gives me maps an plenty of statistics, like elevation , grade, speed, etc.. I am not a competitive cyclist, I just like to know where I am and I like to know my effort, so heart rate, elevation gain and average speed is all I need. I have deadly fallen in love with this computer and I know there are other uses, which I may never use. Worth the cost, as I waited and saved twenty percent and I thought about the purchase for more then one year. I do not buy things easily but this was worth it..

Comments about Garmin Edge Touring Plus GPS Cycling Computer:

My Garmin 705 stopped working. I am a 55 year old woman that used to ride pretty fast. Now I just want to enjoy bike riding and stay in shape. The Touring Plus gives you everything the higher end models do except connection to cadence and power meters. You also can't beam rides instantly to friends or auto upload to social media. I doubt that anyone really cares that I am out riding my bike and I am sure they don't need to follow me in real time! I can see beaming rides to riding partners being useful but if you plan ahead, you can still send rides via links or email and then upload the ride to the device. Maps are included, which is a big plus. I use the Touring Plus as a bike computer and also like to download rides to follow. It works perfectly for this. All of the data fields my old 705 had are available are available on the Touring Plus, with the exception of cadence and power.

As far as cons go, I wasn't a fan of the round trip routes it chose from my house. I have a plethora of lightly traveled country roads around me. The auto round trip routing took me on some more heavily traveled roads. No major highways but certainly trafficy county highways. Though there was a way to minimize elevation gains and to avoid dirt roads with auto routing, there is no way to avoid highways. Perhaps we can get that in a firmware update?

I'm also not a fan of the touch screen so far. When I have a button to push, like on the 705, it always works the same way every time. Sometimes I hit the touch screen and nothing happens. Other times it works OK with a fairly light touch.

Garmin Connect is pretty good. It lets me keep track of all my rides and see them on a map. It also lets me compare the same rides so I can see if I'm getting faster. You can use maps on the site to build courses and then upload the courses to the device. The online maps are quite detailed. Creating, uploading and following courses is one of my favorite things to do.
