Comments about Exustar PM215 Alloy Mountain Pedals:

OK, I admit I haven't actually rode this pedal yet, but I am a ride leader who promotes clipless pedals to new riders and was looking for a replacement for my old standard the Wellgo WM01 which has been discontinued for reasons I would like to know as it was a great value and reliable. The Exustar PM215, however, is clearly an even better pedal since it is a forged alloy body, smoother bearings, and weighs a super light 296 grams per pair (actual). The SPD claw system seems like a new design but looks rugged and has a nice chrome plate on it.The cleat is a new proprietary model but I expect it is Shimano compatible though I will let you know in a follow up review. Aesthetically they pretty much blow everything away with their smooth forged finish and a semi-gloss blue gray anodization plus the nice chrome plate on the SPD jaws. A pair of Shimano PD--M520's, which cost about the same, look like they are from the Paleozoic era and weigh about 100 grams more. And if you shell out the $145 or so for the Shimano XTR PD-M980 pedal you will still have a far less elegant design that also weighs another 20 grams more. Yes, we know the Shimano pedals are very reliable but I have no reason to believe the Exustar PM215 is not an equally rugged pedal based on how smooth the bearings are and the quality of the design. Why have a boring Shimano pedal when you can save so much and get a lighter and really elegant forged alloy design. Yes, the pedal design doesn't try to replicate the new Shimano added contact area they have in their designs but I question the effectiveness of that, not to mention debris clearing issues with it so I like the fully open SPD design myself. For those who don't think 90 grams of pedal weight (vs the PD-M520) is not significant, I don't agree,my experience indicates that every 50 grams of pedal weight is noticeable. Lighter is faster and this is rotating weight. This pedal sets a new standard for
the entry level SPD pedal that should be measured against any other pedal you consider, even if it is much more expensive.
