Nashbar SCR with Silverback Protection Wire Bead Road Tire
Choose a tire worthy of ruling the asphalt jungle courtesy of the Nashbar SCR with Silverback Protection wire bead road tire. Flats are truly the bane of any road rider's existence, but the signature Silverback Protection helps keep punctures to an absolute minimum. Not only is there a Kevlar belt beneath the tread, there's also a tough layer of bead-to-bead nylon for cut resistance. The tread compound is perfect for stacking up high mileage and the smooth center section ensures low rolling resistance.
  • Kevlar belt beneath tread provides excellent puncture resistance
  • Bead-to-bead nylon layer protects the tire's casing from cuts
  • Long-wearing tread compound is great for training and riding every day
  • Slick center tread section rolls super-smooth
  • Siping on tread edges provides cornering traction

Comments about Nashbar SCR with Silverback Protection Wire Bead Road Tire:

I like the exterior composition of the rubber it adheres to the road very well on this kind of weather, i still have to test it in the winter. I normally commute 150 miles per week and do at least a 40 mile ride in the weekend, so far I find the tires to perform very well.

Comments about Nashbar SCR with Silverback Protection Wire Bead Road Tire:

On the plus side, these seem to be sturdy tires. While there is no way of knowing what the cross section is like without cutting one open, they seem to rigid and strong.

Now the negatives. I bought a pair of 25s to fit on some 18/23 rims, which I know can take 25s. The problem is, the bead on these is really shallow, especially compared to the Vittorias I took off. This meant that these tires were really difficult to seat correctly (they were already difficult to put on because of their rigidity). I blew out an inner tube pumping the rear tire up because the bead slipped off the rim near the valve. I rotated the tire 90 degrees and managed to keep the tire seated properly with a second inner tube by using a lower pressure. But after 5 minutes on the next ride, the tire was bulging off the rim in the same place. This wasn't a problem with the rim - I put the old tire back on and got it up to pressure without issue. The bead just isn't deep enough on the nashbar tire. There's another review that says exactly the same thing.

And it's also a bit disingenuous to use language like 'Nashbar signature' in the product description. These are Chao Yang branded tires (most likely their "Attack Pard" with none of the extra "technology" that they offer from looking at their website) that Nashbar have put their own decal on.

Overall, these are a cheap tire. It can make you wonder why other companies charge as much as they do. But for me, the savings aren't worth it until these tires improve.

Comments about Nashbar SCR with Silverback Protection Wire Bead Road Tire:

I bought a pair of these and installed it on my wheels (Ultegra hubs w/ Mavic Open Pro rims), and pumped them up to 100psi. After riding 7 miles I park my bike inside. About an hour later I hear a loud "bang", and found my front wheel was flat. The "lip" of the tire (the part that clinches onto the rim) had failed in one spot and sheared off, and the tire detached from the rim, which caused the tube inside to expand and explode. No longer trust the tire as it no longer attaches to the rim very well.

I've been running these on a beater hybrid for about 300 miles of torn-up New England back roads now. So far, they're wearing well and have been puncture free. They've got a pretty efficient tread pattern (slick at the top with very light tread on the side) and roll very well without vibration.

I installed these 9 months ago, and I have not had a flat tire. I bike commute multiple times a week in a major city. My friends insist you have to spend double this to avoid flats, but it's worked great for me.

Comments about Nashbar SCR with Silverback Protection Wire Bead Road Tire:

I don't understand the previous complaints about these tires. I have been using them both on my road bikes and on our tandem and i have no complaints at all. if i were going to nit pick i would say that the fit was a bit looser than what i would prefer, but that's a minor thing.i don't believe that one could do better for the price and indeed I'm not so sure similar and more expensive tires are so much better to justify the extra cost.
