Comments about Shimano 105 PD-5800 Carbon Road Pedals:

Since I already had three bikes with mountain style SPDs, I put the same on my road bike, and it seemed to work fine. I finally tried these 105 SPD SLs, and they are so much better for road riding. It's much easier and safer to walk in shoes with SPD SL cleats than the small metal SPD cleats (especially with road shoes that have little tread), and the platform is more stable when clipped in.

Comments about Shimano 105 PD-5800 Carbon Road Pedals:

These pedals are a little bit nicer than my old heavy looks. The biggest difference I notice is that the cleats have rubber nubs on the corners which help a lot with traction. I've slipped way too many times on gas station floors 50+ miles into a ride while stopping to buy a Gatorade, but don't feel like I'm ice skating while walking in these.

Perfect racy pedal for those looking to save a few bucks. Bought these to replace the platforms that came with my new road bike. They look great with the rest of the 105 stuff on the bike, and work great as well. No complaints.

Comments about Shimano 105 PD-5800 Carbon Road Pedals:

My review focuses on a comparison to the NB Alpe d'Huez and Shimano R550 pedals, which I have used in the past.
In brief, the quality difference is worth the extra money for 105s imo.

After years of riding with SPDs, I installed AdHs on all my road bikes. Sadly, the bearings of 3 pedals failed within 1000 miles and they were recently returned to NB. Also, replacement cleats are more pricey than a new pair of AdHs...

I recently installed a pair of Shimano R550s on my gf's bike, and was impressed by the overall higher quality of these pedals compared to the AdH's. Since Shimano tends to implement their race technology in 105 components, I wanted to check whether the extra $15 are justified.

Compared to AdHs, 105 pedals are 20ish grams/pedal heavier and nearly twice as expensive.
Nevertheless, the 105 pedals should last a few thousand miles, can be serviced, and cheap replacement cleats and bearings are available. This makes them cheaper within a few seasons.
I did not notice the extra weight in the few 100 miles I rode with them, and I am no weight weenie.
It is much, much easier to click in/out of the 105 pedals. They also are balanced much better, and the 105s tend to be positioned nearly perfectly at take-offs. AdH's were more often a hit/miss in this respect for me.
The cleat/platform of Shimano pedals is wider, which took care of the usual toe numbness/tingling I got after 45-60 min of riding with AdHs. The float is wider on the 105 pedals with the included cleats (6 degs vs 4.5 degs). The foot locks in firmly once pressure is applied to the 105's, while my feet kept sliding around in the AdHs when climbing or sprinting. I assume that the pressure distribution is more even or the 105/Shimano cleats, but it also could be my unique foot anatomy :)

The R550s and 105 come with the same cleats, and there is no real difference once clicked in. The 105s are balanced slightly better than the R550s, they are lighter (which is probably not very noticeable for non-pro's), and the click in/out is more buttery thanks to an overall higher quality of the resistance springs and mountings. While the R550 are hard plastic/composite, the 105s are carbon. Both feel very stiff and sturdy, and I am not sure whether carbon would shatter more easily in a crash or not? The overall quality of the 105s is higher (including bearings, axles).

Overall, the ~$15 more for the 105's are justified, and I will order more to equip all my bikes with them.
