Nashbar Single-Speed 29er Mountain Bike
Gears? You don't need no stinkin' gears! There's no time like the present to join the single-speed party and the Nashbar Single-Speed 29er mountain bike will most assuredly provide your ticket to ride. Its 6061 aluminum frame is lighter than steel, impervious to weather, and provides plenty of strength to boot. The front end features a rigid chromoly fork that's also incredibly tough and delivers steel's famously smooth ride quality. Tektro Novela mechanical disc brakes handle the stopping detail with aplomb and are super-reliable no matter how sloppy the conditions get out in the woods. The bigger 29" hoops will have you rolling easy over obstacles while a set of WTB Nano Sport tires are a marvelous all-around choice -- super-speedy on hardpack but still plenty of reliable, predictable grip when you lean into turns. A 680mm wide aluminum bar means there's plenty of leverage when you have to get out of the saddle to muscle the 32x18 gear up a climb. A blast to ride, simple to maintain, and a guaranteed fun factory on every outing, you may never want to deal with shifters, derailleurs, and cassettes again.
  • 6061 aluminum frame is plenty strong and light
  • Rigid chromoly fork reduces vibrations and is built super-tough to handle spirited riding
  • Tektro Novela mechanical disc brakes deliver reliable stopping power in all conditions
  • WTB Nano Sport tires roll super-smooth on hardpack, provide plenty of traction when cornering

Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed 29er Mountain Bike:

Had a friend who encouraged me to get this bike as he commutes to work and back with the same bike. I figured why not, as I was looking for a basic bike with low maintenance. With the potholes huge here in Spokane and chipseal all over the place, this configuration was perfect for what I need to get to work and back on my 17 mile roundtrip commute. I ride a rather flat route so I will be changing out the rear cog with a 14t so I can move a bit faster. The big tires are perfect and this big is the perfect compliment for what I am using it for.

Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed 29er Mountain Bike:

I got this on a great deal when it was under $300. I immediately upgraded it to a larger crank (FSA 42tooth), some fenders (SKS 65), and Maxxis hookworm tires and larger pedals/saddle combo. My plan was to use this on bad days in NYC for my 4 mile commute. However after a few weeks of locking it up outside some stole it, ULOCK + Cable and all, so I guess it is a great looking bike worth stealing?

Overall I'm pretty impressed with how robust and stable this is. In nasty weather this handled very well. I was very happy using this as my fallback.

Be mindful the tire clearance (especially when I upgraded to the Hookworms) got very very very tight. I had a lot of difficultly setting up fenders and had to cut the fenders up a bit to get it to work. My only wish is that this came with a fork that had more clearance.

The brakes screeched a ton during the rain, but performed admirably. Skidding my tires always sounded like a batmobile. My LBS wasn't able to true them perfectly though, so I always had a little bit of rubbing on wheel rotation. But at the price Nashbar sells this it is still a deal.

FYI. I found the weight of this with my scale to be around 27lbs after assembly.

And again consider twice before locking up. (If you see one in NYC with a larger crank and cement stains on the frame... it might be mine!).

Nice easy riding bike. Great value! I am 6ft and slender, the large fits great. The brakes took me a little time to configure but that was the only difficulty. Setup was maybe 1-1.5 hours total. Very happy with the purchase, considering another for my son.

I am absolutely ecstatic with this bike. Love the frame. Components work fine out of the box. I had to true the front wheel a bit. No worries, I'm handy like that. Couldn't be happier with my first 29er Single Speed. The price just can't be beat..anywhere.

Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed 29er Mountain Bike:

So far so good! Only have about 15 miles on it so far, here are my thoughts:

        - Bike arrived well packed. I took about 90 minutes to go through everything to make sure it was put together OK. I did have to adjust a few things, including re-greasing the headset (was not well lubricated), chain was WAY too tight, cables were routed funky, needed to true the brake rotors, and brakes needed to be re-aligned.

        - I did not experience the brake mounting tab issues some have mentioned. They must have fixed this. The Tektros the bike came with are easy to work on and I had no trouble adjusting them. They stop decent enough for me.

        - The quality of the bike has surpassed my expectations. I once bought a similar bike (except urban focused) from a major brand for 3X the cost of the Nashbar bike, and I feel the quality is about the same. This is a really good value.

Have had for about a month. About two hundred miles. Great bike for flat areas. No gears, no issue for Coastal Carlolina. Bought two. Came in quick, three days and together in about an hour. I'm 5'6" bought a medium, very comfortable. If you are thinking about this bike, buy it. Great buy!

Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed 29er Mountain Bike:

Although I swapped out the stem, handlebar, grips, and tires during the assembly for fitment and other reasons, the ones that come with the bike are great quality. (I ended up using them on my son's bike.) I also added 10mm chain tugs, because I'm big and heavy, and my rear wheel always likes to creep. The bike is great... I did have to take it to my LBS to get the wheels trued and spoke tension checked (which you should always do, unless you are a bike mechanic and can do it yourself), and while they were going through it, they found the rear caliper mounts were so far off that they had to be milled to prevent one of the brake pad from rubbing. They usually charge $60 for this, but they did not charge me, so I believe this to be the case. Other than that, the bike is amazing. I ride almost everyday, either on paved trails or on singletrack when the weather and work schedule cooperate. The gearing is perfect for me, as I bought the bike to help me get back in better shape. I am 6'1", 215 lbs, 32 inch inseam, and I bought the large frame. I find the seat to be comfortable, even on my longest ride on it at 36 miles in 2.5 hrs. The gearing will limit you to about 12.5-13 mph in the flats, unless you like bouncing. If you are on the fence about purchasing this bike, I wouldn't hesitate at this price-point.

Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed 29er Mountain Bike:

the first ride I made on the bike was on a technically challenging single track that provided moderate to heavy elevation changes. It definitely handled the terrain well and provided a superb workout. The following day, I rode a less challenging mountain bike trail of rolling hills. It was a blast to ride on a simple and enjoyable single speed mountain bike. This bike is worth the price (and I caught it on an excellent sale). I would buy it again.
