Diamondback Overdrive Sport 29er Mountain Bike - Nashbar Exclusive
Have you been searching for a reliable 29er mountain bike you can trust to get you out on the trails (and back home, too!) - all at a remarkable price? Look no further than the Diamondback Overdrive Sport 29er, an entry-level mountain bike that in reality is anything but. It's trail-ready plus light, comfortable, and versatile enough to be your do-all bike whether you're into commuting, pedaling around the neighborhood or greenway, or just getting more fit.

The Overdrive Sport's backbone is a hand-built 6061-T6 aluminum alloy frame featuring tubing formed and butted for both strength and light weight. What this means out on the trail or on the road is that you're piloting a nimble, maneuverable machine. You'll revel in the comfort and precision steering supplied by the SR Suntour XCR-LO suspension fork featuring a plush 100mm of travel to smooth out rough terrain. The fork also sports a Lock Out feature (hence the LO in its name) that enables you to maximize power transfer in situations where suspension isn't necessary, such as climbing or rolling along on asphalt or other smooth, hard-pack surfaces.

A 3x9-speed drivetrain with Shimano Altus shifters and a Shimano Acera rear derailleur means 27 easy, smooth, and responsive shifting options for steep climbs, instant acceleration, or prolonged efforts. This makes for excellent performance when pedaling off-road on strenuous terrain as well as easy, comfortable trips across town for work, school, or weekend cruising. And rest assured you can stop at a moment's notice with a set of Shimano hydraulic disc brakes delivering plenty of power and control.

No doubt you've opted for a 29er because of their large-diameter wheels - ideal for rolling smooth and fast over rough terrain - and the Overdrive Sport certainly delivers with a splendid wheelset. There's some incredibly reliable SL7 aluminum doublewall rims, 32-hole SL7 aluminum hubs, plus tried-and-true 14g spokes laced in a 3x pattern. This all equates to a rugged set-up that can tame any terrain. Rounding out the wheelset is a set of Kenda 29x2.2" inch tires that sport an aggressive, all-around tread pattern for incredible bite.
  • Hand-built 6061-T6 aluminum 29er hardtail frame features custom formed and butted tubing for strength, stiffness, and light weight
  • SR Suntour XCR-LO suspension fork provides 100mm of travel for optimal comfort and control off-road plus a lock out feature
  • Shimano Altus and Acera 3x9 drivetrain delivers smooth shifting and gearing for any terrain
  • Shimano hydraulic disc brakes serve up plenty of stopping power
  • Aluminum, 32-hole DB SL7 wheels are strong and reliable

Comments about Diamondback Overdrive Sport 29er Mountain Bike - Nashbar Exclusive:

I ride this bike through the Sonoran Desert which is behind my house. It takes a beating... This bike is great - bought this and a Dual Recoil for my Girlfriend on this site and both were 30% off at the time - a great buy. Both bikes came in boxes and the installation was not terrible. I haven't ridden a bike in 10 years and know little about them. Took me about an hour each - but they work great. Again, I looked at others (particularly Trek bikes). The salesman went on about how the bike welds were superior to others...yada yada yada. This bike has been through hell and back and rides like a champ. If you know your correct size - stop looking and get it you will not be disappointed.

Comments about Diamondback Overdrive Sport 29er Mountain Bike - Nashbar Exclusive:

I bought this during a 25 percent off sale which made it an easy decision. Aluminum frame, hydraulic brakes 3x9 gears, and a lockout suspension for under $500. I spent an hour or two assembling, adjusting shifters, centering the brakes. I've had it out on the trails a few times now, and it sure beats my 26" MTB hands down. The Schwalbe Rapid Rob tires are not my favorite tires (though they are nice general use MTB tires) so I changed to a set of WTB MOTO tires. There are a lot of wet leaves and mud where I ride and the WTB MOTO handles better in those conditions. I look forward to many more miles on this MTB.

Great entry mtb. I made it a 1x9. By adding a narrow wide chainring. Didn't have to cut the chain. Works perfect. No need for a chain guide. Added new clip pedal. The pedals this bike comes with maybe the weakest link

Comments about Diamondback Overdrive Sport 29er Mountain Bike - Nashbar Exclusive:

My wife purchased this bike for me a couple months ago for my birthday. This is my first "real" bike. I had ridden a Kahuna and a Trek shortly before getting this bike and let me say it meets every expectation I have had. My plan was to just get a hybrid bike to be able to commute, but after riding those other bikes in the mountains I knew I needed a mountain bike. I have put around 400 miles on it already, and now the snow and mud have slowed me down.

I am have a new saddle on order, and have added a computer, water cage and a few other accessories. I plan on using this bike to commute to work down some dirt roads. The fork lockout makes this helpful. I am not bouncing up and down trying to make it up a hill.

I feel like this gift is the start of a life long love affair of biking. I am already looking at road bikes to compliment this bike.

Box arrived quickly, but had some damage. None to bike itself.

I bought this during a 25 percent off sale which Nashbar runs periodically. The bike is a tremendous value for that price. Box arrived from UPS with some minor damage, but the bike was not damaged. I spent an hour or two assembling, adjusting, and tweeking. Centered the brakes, minor derailleur barrel adjustment, and removed lots of decals. Diamondback loves their decals! I've ridden on the trails several times now. The bike has been flawless. Weight is 33 pounds. A little heavy, but that's normal for a 29er in the 5-7 hundred dollar range. I am 5'10-1/2" with a stand-over height of 32 in. The 18 inch frame is a good fit, but I would certainly not go any larger as the stand-over clearance is very close.

Comments about Diamondback Overdrive Sport 29er Mountain Bike - Nashbar Exclusive:

So far my experience with this bike has been mostly positive.

The bike was ready to go out of the box. The rear gears did need a bit of indexing, but that's an easy process once you get the hang of it.

I have ridden the bike on my local single track trails for the past 3 months. The trails I ride are extremely rooty and rough, and I generally do not take it easy. The bike was rock solid until last week when the freehub started making noise and grabbing when coasting. I found that the rear hub will only take the Dimondback specific freehub, so I couldn't just grab a replacement at my LBS. I contacted Diamondback to make a warranty claim, and to my surprise they sent out a complete rear wheel without any fuss. This may be an issue in the long run as freehubs are a wear part, and the replacement will need to be ordered directly from Diamondback.

The component level, specifically the hydraulic brakes and XCR fork are not really found on other bikes at this price point. Overall I am happy with my purchase.

Love the large wheels, gears and suspension. The brakes are awesome and the bike is incredibly solid. The only thing lacking was a way to attach a carrier rack and I had to use a seat tube version.

Comments about Diamondback Overdrive Sport 29er Mountain Bike - Nashbar Exclusive:

I just purchased the Overdrive Sport to replace a Hyper Havoc that I purchased new 2 months prior. Even though I upgraded the gears and shifters, tires, grips on the Havoc to get it running good, it still doesn't compare to the Diamondback. This bike runs 5 to 8 MPH faster and is easier to maintain the speed. I needed the lockout on the front as riding is all uphill for me, till I turn around. Right out of the box all that I had to do was put on the front tire, brake and pedals. Plus a 1/4 to 1/2 turn on the dérailleurs to get them perfect. This is my first time with disc brakes and really think they are the best. In 1988 i stopped riding bikes after I graduated and got a motorcycle. Just seeing a grown man on a bike I couldn't understand why they were doing it. I grew up on a bike and not a telephone. The last 15 years I've had tendinitis to the point of being real hard to walk sometimes. After 3 months of riding these bikes, ice and stretching, I think I'm almost better. I know I haven't had strong legs like this in such a long time. I think I'm as happy about having this Diamondback as any motorcycle, truck or car I've had. When choosing the Overdrive Sport I shopped for the Fuji Nevada, and Specialized Rockhopper. The Nashbar Exclusive was the best deal considering what I wanted as it had to be a good climber. The Nashbar Exclusive came with the 36 rear gear for the extra hard climb. I had seen the Rockhopper but not the other two. I really wanted the Nevada, but chose the Diamondback as being the best price for what you get. I'm glad I did. Did I tell you how much I like this bike?

I bought the sport on sale to replace a previous Overdrive I had stolen from me. Nashbar shipped the bike quickly and the box arrived undamaged. When putting on the front wheel I noticed it did not turn easy. I adjusted the bearings but that didnt fix it. Disassembly and adding grease solved that problem. Next it was time to fix RD shifting. The rear derailleur is MUCH cheaper than the one on my previous bike and it was bent. After straightening the bike shifted OK, but not as good as it should. Rear caliper was installed offset a bit and the disk was rubbing the caliper. Easy adjustment. Forks work well and the lockout setting does its job when needed. These forks are MUCH beefier than typical. Buy it and go have some off-road fun!
