Cavalo Corsa Ultegra Road Bike
Carbon fiber is all the rage these days for thoroughbred road machines, but how quickly one forgets the magic that is aluminum. Enter the Cavalo Corsa Ultegra Road Bike, complete with absolutely superb Shimano Ultegra 6800 11-speed components plus Mavic wheels and tires. All-in-all it's a no-nonsense aluminum steed that's good to go out of the box for racing, fondos, spirited group rides, or just fast riding whenever you feel so inclined.

A well-crafted aluminum frame is nearly as light, plenty stiff, built to last, and puts a much smaller dent on your bank account. The Cavalo Corsa road bike sports a custom-butted aluminum frame with sculpted tubes and a tapered 1 ⅛" to 1 ½" headtube that rides and performs like your very own pocket rocket. There's a carbon fork with the corresponding tapered aluminum steerer tube that inspires confidence courtesy of its rock solid and utterly predictable handling.

Gram for gram, dollar for dollar, you'd be hard-pressed to find a finer choice than Shimano Ultegra 6800 11-speed and we've spec'd them where it counts: shift/brake levers, crankset, front derailleur, and rear derailleur. You'll be blown away by how well this stuff works as so much functionality, precision, and reliability has trickled down from big brother Dura-Ace that Ultegra is a tour de force in its own right. The shifting is just perfect while the standard-sized 53/39T crankset coupled with an 11-28T Shimano 105 cassette provides a wide range of gears that still have minimal jumps from gear to gear. The crankset also features Shimano's new four-arm construction and the beauty of this design is that the bolt circle is the same for standard sized and compact chainrings. If you ever want to make the move to compact it's only a matter of swapping out the chainrings - no need to acquire a completely different crankset.

French manufacturer Mavic is synonymous with high-performance wheels and their Aksium S wheelset is a stellar all-around performer. Their 24mm-deep aluminum rims strike a balance between aerodynamics and handling while stainless steel bladed spokes, 20 front and rear, will slice through the wind with aplomb. They're strong enough to ride everyday yet light enough to inject some zip into your rides on command. Paired with these wheels are Mavic's Aksion tires which sport a supple casing for superb ride quality plus a tread compound with plenty of grip so you can carve your way through corners as if on rails.
  • Aluminum frame is stiff, light, and strong
  • Carbon fork with tapered aluminum steerer ensures superb steering response
  • 11-speed Shimano Ultegra shifters, derailleurs, and crankset are superb performers
  • Mavic Aksium S alloy wheelset is rock solid, sports 24mm deep rims, and has a UB control brake track
  • Mavic Aksion tires are light, durable, and smooth rolling
  • Alloy stem, bars, seatpost, and brakes perform at a high level and keep weight way down

Comments about Cavalo Corsa Ultegra Road Bike:

Replace the seat and this is high quality road bike. The carbon fork does a nice job of eating some of the imperfections of rougher roads. The Ultegra groupset always seems like it has an extra gear available, sort of like a Billy Mays commercial "BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE" A similar spec'ed bike from a big time brand would run you well into the $2000-3000 range. High value bike if you are looking to get into cycling.

Comments about Cavalo Corsa Ultegra Road Bike:

Ride with family, Exercise on weekends, commute 12 miles to work. Previous bike was old school GT Fury with Campy record components except Cinelli Bar and Stem and Shimano 600 drive train. Amazed that this bike is just as quick but much more comfortable. I grew up a bike snob with a custom Johnny Berry, Reynolds 531 and all Campy Record. The Cavalo is a nice riding frame.

Have taken this bike on two 70 mile rides and had no bike issues other than the seat...it is stiff and uncomfortable. Ultegra components for $850 is a steal! Great looking bike also.

Comments about Cavalo Corsa Ultegra Road Bike:

Now that I've put 50 miles on it, I can say that I agree with the other reviewers--the brakes are weak. Nashbar has this setup as a killer starting point, but I'm going to maximize my purchase by upgrading the bike. The seat is very basic, and with the stock post is very heavy. My BMX bikes have lighter seats. It's a stiff and heavy Kalloy, so once I upgrade that it'll be a marked improvement. The Ultegra drivetrain is remarkably stiff, the wheels are entry level Mavics, and setup was a breeze. Front deraileur and brakes needed adjustment out of the box, but that's expected. It's a joy to take out on the country roads and the border collies can't keep up with me. Bottom line: I paid $854 shipped for a bike with Ultegra drivetrain and couldn't be happier.

Comments about Cavalo Corsa Ultegra Road Bike:

I've been riding a Performance branded Ultegra road bike since 2006 which was aluminum with carbon stays. I'm happy that this one feels very similar after a few 20 mile rides. (and the cost was about the same 11 years later) My old bike's gearing was 3X10 and I still have reservations about giving up my granny gear. (Its just nice knowing there is something in reserve.) I may end up changing to compact cranks but first will just replace the cassette with a 10-32. The seat is a little cheap looking and somewhat heavy but its ok. A good someday upgrade would be a carbon post with a better saddle. The wheel clearance looks to accommodate a fairly large rear tire which I like but the front will be constrained by fork clearance. I've not changed tires yet but it may be limited to 700 x 25 in front but the back should take at least 700 x 28. One issue I found with mine is that the front brake pad actually rubs the fork. I shifted it as far forward as the bolt clearance would allow but still it took off the paint and interferes when opened wide for wheel removal. I may add a spacer washer to address this. Since its only 1 side I suspect a bit of a quality issue in the forming of the brake mounting hole: I think its slightly out of line causing the brakes to be tilted slightly with respect to the wheel. The pad adjustment still allows the pads to strike parallel to the rim though. The listing did not mention the crank arm length: I bought a 57cm frame and was happy that it had 175mm crank arms.

Comments about Cavalo Corsa Ultegra Road Bike:

There are what appear to be spot welds joining the smaller chain ring to the larger. These protuberances or bumps rub against the side of the chain when in the low-middle gears. This is very annoying and must be reducing the life of the chain. As the chain rubs them off while pedaling, the click will diminish and eventually disappear.
I do, however, love this bicycle and consider it a great value because of the components.

Actually my first road bike. I'm 53, 5'11", 235,healthy. Took up riding. This bike is fantastic. High quality components. Pro's: I totally waste people who underestimate me on this bike. Put 2000 flawless miles on it so far. Just finally blew the front tire. Otherwise all original. CON: I go to events where 1000s of bikers ride and never really see other Cavalos. Only uber expensive Trek, Fuji, Carbons, etc.. Oh well. I tell people my Cavalo is 'exotic'. hehe.

Comments about Cavalo Corsa Ultegra Road Bike:

I just started riding the bike, seems nice. However it's my 3rd one, the first one had a damaged frame, the second one a damaged fork/front brake. Nashbar was great about returning them but I wish they would have checked them out before sending them to me. The 3rd one was obviously reviewed by someone and everything was good. It is a hassle to pick-up/send a bike back so many times. All that said it's a beautiful bike. I wish I could recommend to a friend just because Nashbar was so good about the returns. I spent 70 dollars having the second bike checked out because I could not figure out the brake issue.
