Nashbar AL1 Road Bike
Value abounds while the price astounds with the Nashbar AL1 Road Bike. Quite simply, you won't find a better spec'd entry into the world of road riding. There's an aluminum frame that's light, strong, and built to last while up front the carbon fiber fork ensures the bike handles like a charm out on the open road. • Lightweight aluminum frame features sculpted, ovalized top tube and down tube
  • Carbon fiber fork with aluminum steerer tube ensures responsive handling
  • New Shimano Sora 3500 shift levers and derailleurs for smooth gear changes

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Road Bike:

A decent, "entry level" road bike that won't break the bank. I like all aspects of it, including the unpretentious, battleship-grey color scheme that goes well with everyday exercise/street clothing. Assembly was easy, cables had the correct length. (Some adjustment was needed after the first 100km, of course.) The 25mm tires make for a slightly less punishing ride on NYC streets and tree-root damaged bike trails than 23mm ones. The plain platform pedals that come with the bike are appropriate for city riding too. One minor complaint: downshifting the Sora front derailleur is unusually harsh; cable tension may be too high due to an excessively strong spring in the derailleur. Back derailleur is perfect.

Awesome bike for the price... most bikes with sora drivetrain will cost you about 1200 dollars. my only gripe is I'm a heavy rider 230 lbs when i bought this and the back wheel kept coming untrue no big deal bought a better wheel set plan to ride this bike for a long time!!

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Road Bike:

The AL1 is a great entry level bike. You aren't going to find a road bike with Shimano Sora components at a price this low. Entry level road bikes at the local stores I visited were using Shimano Claris components at twice the price, which is considered a level below the Sora groupsets.

Keep in mind that the pedals, chain, wheelset, crankset and brakes are not Shimano branded. (This isn't a huge deal for a bike at this price point.) Saddle is also a generic model and the build quality is low. Although all of these components are going to work perfectly fine for a casual rider, commuting or general exercise. If you're a cycling enthusiast you'll likely be upgrading these soon anyway.

Very easy to assemble. The front derailleur required adjustment out of the box. Rear derailleur was indexed perfectly. I did have to make more adjustments to both after around 50mi of riding. Watch a few youtube videos on adjusting these. If you are going to be riding frequently it's worth learning how everything works.

Make sure you check out the size charts to ensure the bike geometry fits you correctly. I'm 6ft tall and ordered a '58', which measures 57.3cm at the top tube and 57cm at the seat tube. The next size down '56' has a 54cm seat tube and a 55cm top tube.

      Dry, smooth road bike

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Road Bike:

It feels light and smooth when the road is smooth, otherwise not so much, not like a steel bike, instead vibrating over bumps in old multi use paths. Also I got this for when the road is dry and I don't need to carry much, because there are no attachments for fenders or racks.

The gearing is plenty low enough when the point is exercise. I was worried I might need to train to get used to it, because it's not a mountain size cassette, but having the bike properly sized and cranks larger for larger frame sizes (175 mm for the 58 cm frame) makes up for that. The seat seems not to be large enough, not when tending to push back on it.

Overall, it's a good weather exercise bike for feeling carefree out on a smooth road.

It required buying some tools to set it up that I didn't have because my old bike is so much older: 8 mm hex wrench for the cranks and other hex wrenches, 15 mm pedal wrench, Presta pump.

The only problem I've had with it so far is that the front derailleur seems like it either has to rub the chain in the lowest gear or else drop the chain. It seems like that requires more adjustment while riding or else compromise than the best possible bikes would have.

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Road Bike:

I replaced a road bike I had for 27 years. I needed something I could spin on because my mountain bike is not good for high cadence spinning. To me the bike is light, responsive, and smooth. I haven't ridden much but will update my review later. The bike came well packed and ws simple to put together. I did flip the stem over to raise the bars up. I used the Performance bike fit chart to get a better understanding of the fit. I have short legs, 29.5" in-seam, and the 56 fits great. The bike shifts smoothly and the breaks work well. There are no real climbs in southern Delaware but the bike seems quick and responsive. The price was dropped and a discount was offered within 10 days of my purchase. I called and they refunded me $50. For the price, I have no complaints.

Because teh bike is delivered by mail, the components need to set on delivery and won't e perfect immediately, that's to be expected. Bring it to your local bike shop,if you can't watch a few youtube videos on how to set your brakes and derailleurs.
My only complaint is regarding the rear derailleur. 11-24 feels a too small range for those who live in the mountains. Shimano makes the same derailleur in 11-30 that would probably be a much better fit, especially considering the cassettes are the same price.

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Road Bike:

I pulled the trigger on the AL 1 after reading as many reviews as possible. After some time spent with it, just to be clear this bike is what it is - an entry level road bike. There are lighter bikes out there, as well as bikes with better groupsets, but you'll be hard pressed to find a bike of this caliber for this price. The AL 1 does not feel cheap, and if you're a fan of the geometry then it provides a good platform for you to upgrade components in the future if you desire.

One recommendation I would make is to upgrade the tires when you can. I took the bike on a test ride when it was sprinkling rain, and on semi-wet asphalt I took a spill. Not even going 8mph. To me that's inexcusable, as I can tell you everything was tightened, the conditions weren't bad and I was casually riding.

I made sure to get the bike with the 25% coupon that pops up on Nashbar from time to time, so make sure to take advantage of that.

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Road Bike:

Purchased this bike for my 12 year old son so he could ride with me and my wife. Assembly was pretty easy but there were NO instructions. I had to cut 1.5" off the seat tube to make it fit him. Otherwise the size was perfect. When I rode it for testing my feet hit the front tire while turning (size 10 shoe) but he doesn't seem to have the same issue. I replaced the stock seat with a much more comfortable one I had from another bike. The bike is attractive, well made and a great buy for the price. My son loves it and we love being able to take him on rides with us. Nashbar is definitely my goto place for quality products at a reasonable price.

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Road Bike:

I can't believe that entry-level bikes start at 1000 dollars. This one is actually in almost everyone's price range and rides nice. I did take it for a 50 dollar tune up because the gears were not all aligned properly. It still has a little bit of trouble being in gear perfectly, but I'm hoping it just needs to be worn in (or I need to get used to it).

        So far, so good.

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Road Bike:

I ride 20 miles/day for exercise and bought an AL1 to replace a 1974 Raleigh Super Course that was becoming hard to maintain, and am glad I did. The box arrived early and was easy to assemble. The front brakes required adjustment otherwise it was rideable out of the box. I ordered a 60cm version which felt big because the bottom bracket distance was 1" higher than the old Raleigh. It weighs in at 23.5 lbs , where the Super Course was 25.0 lbs. My first ride was great. The seat was more comfortable than the Specialized on my old bike. The ride is agile and the carbon fork absorbs a lot of road noise. I accustomed myself to the smooth Sora/STI gear shifters, but only nine speeds because the front derailleur was stuck. I e-mailed customer service and did some minor adjustment and now it's fine. Cons are the wheels are cheap and will soon be upgraded, and the paint job resembles a flat primer and it is already hard to keep clean.
