Hutchinson Intensive Road Tire
High mileage, puncture resistant, and lightweight -- the Hutchinson Intensive hits the trifecta for everything you want in a high-performance road tire. The dual compound tread ensures there's minimal resistance on the center portion of the tire while the softer edges deliver plenty of grip when cornering. The kevlar Protech belt minimizes flats while the Hardskin sidewall reinforcement wards off cuts and abrasions. And with a weight of just 230 grams, the Intensive is quite the all-around performer.
  • Dual compound tread provides low rolling resistance plus awesome grip when cornering
  • Kevlar Protech belt makes tire highly resistant to flats
  • Hardskin sidewall reinforcement protects against cuts and abrasions

Comments about Hutchinson Intensive Road Tire:

I read the comments here and couldn't help to respond.

First is the difficult to install concern. What a lot of people don't realize it's actually better to have a tire that is difficult to install because then if you have a flat while riding the chances are very good the tire won't come off the rim resulting in a crash. There is also methods to installing tires that make it easier just go to You Tube and do a search on how to mount a bicycle tire, and how to fix a bicycle flat.

Sometimes what I do is put the tires in my car on a hot day with the windows rolled up for about 2 hours, this makes them softer and easier to put on, then I stretch them with them looped around my feet and I pull with hands, but you need to put them on quickly before they cool down, which means you leave the last one in the car until you're ready to install. Yes a dryer is faster but my wife would have my head if I did that to HER dryer.

100 psi in a tire will not cause a tube to explode, tubes can take twice that without issues. So the damage mentioned was done either due to a bad tube or the tube got caught between the rim and tire and went unnoticed.

You should have a set of good tire irons like the Soma Steel Core levers or the Pedros, poor quality levers can snap on you and you don't want that out on a ride.

On to the tires, I found them to be very good tires, I have about 2,000 miles on them and they still look very good with no flats, probably get at least another 2,000 miles on them. I live in Indiana and ride in the rain a lot and I find them to be very good on wet pavement, they also handle well. Whats surprising is they don't feel like other 66 tpi tires I've use, they feel very subtle and not harsh.

There are a lot of good tires on the market these days but if you can get these on sale you'll get a great deal, some tire companies have fixed pricing and you can't get a good deal even when they have a "sale", but Hutchinson and others don't do that, so you can get a very good tire for the price of a so so tire when it's on sale.

This is a great tire for commuting, century rides, and training on.

Comments about Hutchinson Intensive Road Tire:

I bought these earlier this year to keep some 25mm tires in stock. My Continental Grand Prixs both started flatting at about 1700 miles (another sore point, but I digress) so I removed them and installed these.

I don't claim to be a competent bike mechanic but I've installed a number of tubes and tires since I began riding in 2013. These were the most miserable experience I've had, needing a Crank Brothers lever to get them on after trying everything else.

The real fun started once I inflated them. The mfr recommends 100 psi at my weight, which is high for a 25mm tire. Not sure what happened but I destroyed one tube after inflating -- it split along the seam with a loud bang -- and another seemed to fail with a spoke indentation, notwithstanding the rim tape. In all I think I trashed three tubes between the two tires. I have about 3000 miles on these wheels and didn't do anything out of the ordinary. That's not true: I never use a tire lever to install tires as it risks damaging the tube.

Anyhow, I rode around inflated to mfr recommendation and I'm somewhat impressed, as it's a supple ride. I dialed the pressure down to around where I had the Continentals and it's good.

In other news, I don't have calipers but 25mm seems optimistic to me. I think 24 is more realistic.

So four stars for the ride and one for installation. These are getting the heave ho the end of this season, sooner if they flat. Replacing with Continental Four Seasons.

Comments about Hutchinson Intensive Road Tire:

I place there tires in a dryer for 3 - 4 minutes before installing, after which I try to stretch the bead in at least 4 directions.

One installed, they're great - be wary, though, on a remote ride, patching or replacing a tube can be a bear.
