Comments about Crank Bros. Crank Brothers Mallet 3 LE Mountain Pedals:

I recently bought a fatty; got the pedals, cage, and mtb shoes from Bike Nashbar. These pedals are great as they allow me to clip in AND ride the bike with street shoes. This bike will be a low mileage toy, so I don't know how well these pedals will hold up. We'll see. But - they work nicely now.

Just rates to use them. But so far so good. I am going to the mallet from a candy model. I like them much better due to they have a platform.

Comments about Crank Bros. Crank Brothers Mallet 3 LE Mountain Pedals:

I have used Crank Bros pedals on my Mtn bikes for years. I have egg beaters & Candies. I find them very easy to clip and un-clip and pretty durable. I bought these pedals for my new Nashbar Road bike so that I wear my Mtn bike shoes in my road bike. I am a newbie road biker, so I don't have much to compare them too, I really like the Mallet 3. Easy to clip in and un-clip, sturdy and the wider platform feels more comfortable on longer rides.

Comments about Crank Bros. Crank Brothers Mallet 3 LE Mountain Pedals:

This is my first venture into clipless pedals. I like to go for longer more challenging weekend rides, but almost daily during the week I trail my 2-year-old around town and run errrands. For my needs, purely clipless pedals don't make sense.

I installed these on my Specialized Allez road bike which was easily accomplished without special tools, using only a standard open end wrench and a hex key. I probably should've had some grease or anti-seize on hand, but there was some leftover from the installed pedals.

Using these riding clipped in feels great, the extra room of the platform gives me a sense of security while I'm still learning, so if I don't clip in right away after a stop, I don't have to worry too much because I can push along fine on the platform. using Specialized Rime MTB shoes which have a fair amount of Vibram tread, clipping in is relatively easy, and once I'm clipped in it' holds me securely and has never unintentionally released. Releasing is smooth and predictable.

Ridding without clipping in, using sneakers, is the only reason I take a star off. Due to the design of the Egg Beater clip, the center of the pedal is quite raised. They try to compensate for this with little screw rivets that line the border of the pedal to meet your shoe. It's a difficult balance to design, because if the platform portion is too high and the clip isn't exposed enough, you'll have a harder time clipping in. However if the platform isn't raised enough, then you don't make much contact with it aside from the Egg Beater itself which feels like pedaling on a stick. In my case, riding with sneakers gives the distinctive feel that I'm mainly pushing on the Egg Beater, and the platform is just there for a little stability. I was hoping it would feel a bit closer to riding on an actual platform pedal, but I think given the design of the Egg Beater, this is probably not possible.

Overall these are great, they're extremely well-made, you can tell the build-quality when you see and hold them. I'm very happy with the purchase, and would be curious after I become very comfortable with clipess pedals, if the Candy pedal might provide enough platform for me to commute instead, since the Mallet feel isn't perfect in sneakers.

I use clipless and my wife does not. I use these on my mtb with kids in tow and we are able to switch turns and both ride effectively. If I just start pedaling my shoes will clip in usually. Very easy to get in and out of. I find these a great buy.

Comments about Crank Bros. Crank Brothers Mallet 3 LE Mountain Pedals:

Use it with touring cycling shoes and on occasion with sneakers. It's on my adux cycle for century rides. Works fine, plenty of float for bad knees and still easy to get in and out. Love them. Use eggbeaters on my mountain bike too. Took awhile to get use to the loose and large amount of float compared to normal spd peds, but will never go back to those again. Crank Bros all the way!
