Nashbar Shadow DLX4 4-Bike Hitch Rack
Transporting up to a quartet of bikes to the next road, mountain, or greenway adventure is a simple endeavor with the Nashbar Shadow DLX4 4-Bike Hitch Rack. The wide range of adjustability regarding wheelbase length and the height of each bike's top tube means the rack can accommodate most any bike out there. Attachment of each bike to the rack is super-simple as it requires just securing the rack arm to the top tube plus fastening the ratcheting strap to each wheel. The upright rack arms can be folded down for access to the rear of the vehicle (bikes must be removed from the rack) and when the rack isn't in use it folds upright for a more compact rear profile on your vehicle.

Comments about Nashbar Shadow DLX4 4-Bike Hitch Rack:

I use to carry 1 to 4 bikes. The rack is solid and heavy, not for cars, need SUV or truck. You cant beat the price compared to major brands. I have used this rack for a few weeks and am satisfied. If you have carbon wheels the straps will need to be modified to go around rims

Comments about Nashbar Shadow DLX4 4-Bike Hitch Rack:

So far a solid performer. Bought this for use almost exclusively as a 2-bike rack, with the potential for 4 bikes when needed. Easy bike loading/unloading. Rides with very little sway, though here I do supplement with nylon straps splayed out to each side of the bumper. It is, as others have mentioned, on the heavy side: the 2-bike setup alone weighs 45 lbs. One problematic area is security. While the hitch end locks securely to the vehicle, and each bike is separately locked to the vertical arm, there is a joint in the middle that is simply bolted. An enterprising thief with a socket wrench can unbolt the outboard section of the rack, bikes and all, and toss them in their truck bed. To counter this vulnerability I use a long cable lock to string the bikes to the truck. Were it not for the security hiccup I'd give this a 5-star rating.

Comments about Nashbar Shadow DLX4 4-Bike Hitch Rack:

We picked this up on sale after about 5-6 years of a four-bike Thule slide-on rack. The Thule was practically unbearable because of the kids' bikes...getting them on and off was like a jigsaw puzzle.

Anyway, saw this on sale, and decided to try it having seen many similar racks (different brands) up in the mountains on weekends. For 1/2 the price of a Thule, I definitely feel like I got my money's worth.

My son and I put the rack together in about 30 minutes. You just have to pay close attention to which way the labels and fittings are supposed to fit together. We had to strip it down and start over after about 10 minutes because the diagram was a little tough to read. Other than that, piece of cake.

It is quite heavy, but folded up, there's a lot of room to hold onto, and my wife and I easily attached it to the truck. The hitch pin is both a screw AND a lock, which I like a lot. Keeps the rack from swaying as much, and also adds a little peace of mind. Storage wise, it's a big rectangle about 3'x4', so be sure you have the wall space to hang it, and mount it to the wall studs (weight!). It's low profile, so it only sticks out about 6-8" from the wall.

It's a champ for carrying four different sized bikes. Easy on/off, and the braces individually lock too. Took about 2 minutes per bike to get the wheel supports spaced correctly. The zip ties for the wheels work like a snowboard binding, and release easily.

I have not taken it on any rougher roads yet, but as far as driving around the county and hitting various trails, no noticeable problems. I was surprised that it actually sticks out no further when folded than my old Thule rack. It's very low profile considering its size.

Perhaps because it is new, the bolt which secures the rack hinge is quite sticky. I'm sure as the finish wears off, it'll slide more easily. I just gave it a good kick to pop it in/out. lol Like I said, very sturdy.

Enjoy!

Comments about Nashbar Shadow DLX4 4-Bike Hitch Rack:

This is an excellent rack. Very sturdy and easy to use. It was extremely easy to assemble, I didn't even look at the instructions to assemble. It's common sense on what part goes where as well as the bolts. It is nice since you don't have to use all 4 trays and just use 2 trays. The locking feature to secure the bikes from being stolen is nice also.

Got a good deal on this rack. It is a little on the heavy side. My only complaint about this rack is the straps for the wheels is too short. If you have bigger rims and tires this won't work for you.

Comments about Nashbar Shadow DLX4 4-Bike Hitch Rack:

This bike rack is everything that I was looking for. I have a full suspension bike that requires a bike bar for my old rack, but the platform of this rack eliminates that. I also have kids bikes to lug around and this rack is adjustable to accommodate their bikes.

The added bonus, as another reviewer mentioned, is that this rack can convert from a 4 bike to a 2 bike rack which is not stated in the description. It also has built in locks that lock the height bars of each bike individually! All of that for a great price!

Comments about Nashbar Shadow DLX4 4-Bike Hitch Rack:

They aren't kidding when they say it is heavy. If you have any back problems at all, do not buy this. It weighs at least 75 pounds and is a real beast to take on and off, and I'm a pretty strong guy. You need to be strong to deal with this thing, or it's a two person job. Also make sure you have a solid trailer hitch receiver that's bolted to the frame of your auto, not just the bumper. It also doesn't seem like the best build quality, but it is inexpensive and fits nearly any size bikes so great for families (who have large muscles).
