Lake MXZ 303X Wide Winter Cycling Shoes
It's no secret that Lake makes some of the best winter cycling shoes out there, but now they've seriously upped their game. The Lake MXZ 303X winter cycling shoe takes it to a whole new level with Pittards WR100 leather, Thinsulate insulation, Thermosol insoles, and a whole lot more. And speaking of more, this version of the MXZ 303 is the wide edition for those needing some extra width in their cycling shoes. If you live somewhere where snow, miserable temperatures and nasty winds are the norm November-March, then you definitely need these shoes.
  • Pittards water resistant 100 leather construction helps keep your feet dry and protected in the winter months
  • Outlast liner helps protect your feet from inclement weather
  • Airprene cuff is water repellent and keeps out the snow, spray, and cold air
  • Toe box uses Thinsulate to keep your toes nice and warm in even the harshest winds
  • Thermosol insole helps insulate your foot from the outsole to help keep warmth in while riding
  • BOA closure makes for easy one handed adjustments
  • Storm flap fastens with adjustable pinch clip for extra insulation and to ensure that the bad weather doesn't leak into your shoe
  • 2-bolt cleat compatible
  • Wide edition

Comments about Lake MXZ 303X Wide Winter Cycling Shoes:

Reviews for winter products can be difficult to write and difficult to interpret. Given the multitude of variables--personal blood flow to extremities, what you consider "cold/winter," temperatures, lengths of rides, wind, etc.--how does one know if another's experiences hit the mark?

I had hoped these "wide" boots would be wide, but my 10D feet--not really all that exceptionally wide--are a snug fit. They were better than the standard boot I initially ordered, but I can't wear the extra socks I'd hoped for. On the warmth front, they've been a bit of a disappointment.

Here's a sampling of four Minnesota rides:
    1) 0F, winds 5-10 mph, 13 miles (~1 hour) -- cold feet limited the ride
    2) 5F, winds 5-10 mph, 20 miles (~1.5 hours) -- again, feet were the limit
    3) 10F, winds 10-15 mph, 34 miles (~2.5 hours) -- cold feet but "tolerable."
    4) 32F, winds 10 mph, 38 miles (~3 hours) -- no issues, including no overheating.

I haven't experienced wet conditions yet but I'm curious how they'll perform during a spring thaw.

Overall, they're better than what I'd been using and they're better than my old layering technique. They fit a nice range of my winter riding, but not quite as low as I'd hoped.

Comments about Lake MXZ 303X Wide Winter Cycling Shoes:

Great product for the winter. Keeps the plenty warm down to 35 degrees on the road. I don't ride any colder so I would not know how the perform. With a thick pair of sox size up one. Usually in a 46 and these in a 47 fit perfect. Great for wide feet. Only negative is I can't move the cleats far enough in so the boots don't rub on the crank. May be the pedals I have.

Comments about Lake MXZ 303X Wide Winter Cycling Shoes:

So far tested in 10-30F degree weather and they worked as designed. Would get 5 stars if there was some form of insole/arch support. I used the insoles from another pair of Lakes and it worked great. My feet were warm and toasty with just a basic pair of summertime cycling socks. I could easily see these boots working at lower temps ... just haven't experienced them yet. My toes are happy now :) Oh and wait for that coupon from Nashbar in your email. Makes them well worth it.

Comments about Lake MXZ 303X Wide Winter Cycling Shoes:

I used these for the first time this past weekend. Installed some eggbeaters on my road bike to use with these boots when the roads allow. Rode 30 miles in 27 degree weather. By the end of the ride, the cold was just beginning to seep into my feet, but my feet were still fine and I could have spent another hour on the bike with no problem. These were far more effective at defeating the cold than my shoe or toe covers over my normal rode bike shoes. This definitely will allow me more riding time during the winter. I have size 9 wide feet and bought these in a 44 wide. They fit fine over a pair of ski socks.

Comments about Lake MXZ 303X Wide Winter Cycling Shoes:

I normally wear a 48 and I would have preferred a 49 but 50 is all that was available. Getting them large enough is the key and don't over tighten the laces. Your feet need a little space to stay warm. After years of freezing feet caused by winter riding in summer shoes covered with a neoprene cover, these shoes deliver me to my destination with warm feet. My coldest ride so far is 26F and I will update if I am able to ride in cooler temps and/or rainy conditions. They are big and clunky but they are warm. Another great thing about them is that they don't get too hot in the warmer temps of the afternoon; my max temperature so far has been about 48F. They have a very stiff sole and because of their bulk, cleat positioning is critical to prevent rubbing on the crank arms.

I normally wear either 44 W or 45 W (11 1/2 US) so ordered a 46 but it was very tight still. Will review fully if I reorder a 48 and have a chance to use them.

Comments about Lake MXZ 303X Wide Winter Cycling Shoes:

normally wear a 44 it was to tight width wise. exchanged for 45 width is good a little long but leaves room for thick socks and toe warmers needed to keep warm under 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Disappointing that way but toes stay warm with the additions. Very nice looking and appear very well constructed. Hit a 6in deep puddle at approx. 15 mi per hr and felt water come in, not sure how they appear as though they would shed water. Have not used in the rain. Have not tried any other winter cycling boots have nothing to compare with other than price. Feel they are a reasonable boot for the money not going to return them.
