Mongoose Selous Sport Gravel Bike
Gravel grinding, cyclocross, as well as commuting are all realms that the Mongoose Selous Sport is completely at home. The Selous Sport features Mongoose Gravel Grinder double-butted aluminum tubing for both strength and light weight while the aluminum fork is strong, durable, and delivers a responsive ride. Mongoose wisely equipped the frameset to clear 40c width tires plus routed all the cables along the top tube to keep them out of the way of mud and grime. The 2x9-speed drivetrain features Shimano Sora components for dependability and reliability while the FSA Vero Compact crankset features 50/34T chainrings for a broad range of gearing to handle the diverse terrain that is the Selous Sport's stomping grounds. The wheels feature Alex DP-23 tubeless ready rims that are laced to VP aluminum hubs set up for quick release front and rear. Bike is ok. I could have bought one local for what I paid for this, I thought it was going to be a better bike. It is not bad but not as good as was expected. Good thing it was on sale.

Comments about Mongoose Selous Sport Gravel Bike:

I looked high and low for an affordable Cyclocross style bike. While there are MANY well-equipped bike above the $1500 mark, there are very few in the sub-$1000 category. I was drawn to the Mongoose Selous Sport because of the price, aluminum construction, decent components group, and the fact that it new to Cyclocross/gravel riding. I'm a 51 year-old former BMXer/mountain biker. This bike fits my needs PERFECTLY. FITS GREAT (I'm 6' tall, 34" inseam, and I chose the 58cm size), rides great, fairly lightweight (compared to my mountain bikes), and looks great with the durable gloss powder-coated finish....even the Mongoose graphics are coated over. NICE. If you're an occasional rider looking for a good all-around bike, and you're on a budget, you won't be disappointed. If you're weight conscious, snooty about components, and have lots of extra $$$$ to spend, by all means, have a look at the higher end offerings. Truth told, you and I will probably being sharing the same bike path. ;)

Go for it. I bought this for riding this winter. Its inexpensive, durable, fun to ride, the 40c tires role well, who cares about wight as long as you can get out and ride in the winter.

          Good for the price

Comments about Mongoose Selous Sport Gravel Bike:

I've been looking for a gravel-grinder, all-road bike to add to the stable. When this went on sale for $450 shipped I couldn't pass it up. I haven't had a chance to ride it yet, but considering it's aluminum with a straight alum fork I expect it to be unforgiving and quick. I stripped it down to the frame to swap on parts I have and take some weights. Here are some initial thoughts:
The frame build is about what you'd expect for this price point. The welds aren't pretty but functional. The headtube is not tapered, despite the description. Fortunately it is 44mm, so you can run a tapered fork with a special headset.
The wheels are massive and heavy. I measured 23mm inside the rims, hence the "23" in the rim name. Switching out to moderately-priced 29er wheels will save considerable weight.
The front derailleur is top-pull and feeds through a pulley mounted at the bottom of the seat tube. I will replace it with a proper top-pull derailleur from Nashbar.
The crankset is square taper. I didn't know those still existed. I switched out to an old ISIS I have.
The handlebars are 40cm wide. I prefer much wider and figured I would need to replace them.
The brake housing is Jagwire compressionless. Nice to see at this price.
I'm 6' tall with a 32" inseam. I went with the 54cm frame. The dimensions match my road and commuter bikes, though I might eventually replace the 90mm stem with 100mm.
          Here are some weights:
          Front wheel: 1162 grams (2lbs 9 oz)
          Rear wheel: 1332 grams (2lbs 15oz)
          Crank: 680 grams
          BB: 234 grams
          Seatpost: 338g
          Saddle: 343g
          Fork: 793g (1lb 12oz)
          Frame: 4lb 2oz
          Bike: 24.5 lbs

Great bike for gravel grinding without the high price of titanium equivalent.
Big savings for handy riders who know how to put it together and make adjustments.

A good starter gravel bike. A titanium with better groupset would run 6x and up.
If you are comfortable with making adjustments to everything on the bike, this is the best deal.

Comments about Mongoose Selous Sport Gravel Bike:

Bike was easy to put together. I use it to ride to and from work (about 12 miles round trip) and I love it. Decided to go with a gravel grinder because New Mexico roads suck. Definitely don't regret the purchase.
