Mongoose Argus Sport Fat Bike
It's time to discover the wonders of fat biking and the Mongoose Argus Sport is the perfect means to reap new adventures on sand, snow, or dirt. The Argus Sport features an aluminum hardtail frame as well as an aluminum rigid fork for the ultimate in strength and reliability. The 3x9-speed drivetrain sports a 40/30/22T Prowheel crankset paired with a 9-speed 11-36T cassette to ensure you've got all the gearing you need to tackle the demanding terrain where a fat bike is in its element. A mixture of Shimano Altus, Acera, and Alivio components for the shifters, derailleurs, and cassette deliver smooth gear changes and renowned Shimano reliability while the Mongoose mechanical disc brakes provide plenty of all-conditions stopping power. And what puts the "fat" in fat bike are of course the tires and the Argus Sport rolls on 26" x 4.0" Kenda Juggernauts for plenty of traction and shock absorption.

Comments about Mongoose Argus Sport Fat Bike:

The Argus is a higher-end version of the Mongoose Vinson.

The Argus has more gears, bigger disc brakes, better micro-adjust seat post, better tires, and is available in 3 frame sizes....a much better value than the Vinson, all for the same price (at least when Nashbar has them on sale).

If this is your first "real" bike, you will have a few adjustments to make BEFORE you ride it. No links are allowed here, but you can search the MTBR forum for "Argus Assembly" and follow the fully illustrated assembly instructions.

If you have never had a bike with Disc Brakes before, make sure you watch the BikeRadar video "How To Adjust Cable Disc Brakes" on Youtube. This will save you much time and headache. It's super easy once you see how it's properly done.

The saddle was actually more comfortable than any stock saddle I've ever had. That being said, the foam in a saddle only lasts a few seasons, so I'm sure I'll replace it with a Cloud Nine at some point in the near future.

All the Mongoose logos are NOT decals. They are painted on under the Clearcoat paint. So that means that if you need to peel them off to keep the bike from being stolen, you are out of luck. Some Camo Duct Tape might be an idea to disguise the bike from thieves.

The handlebar stem was too long for my tastes. I installed a shorter one in about 5 minutes; an easy $10 customization.

I bought the Argus as a backup bike, but I've been riding it more than my much more expensive main bike. Great fun.

Comments about Mongoose Argus Sport Fat Bike:

Upgrading from mountain bikes with 26x2.3 tires for daily beach patrol.

      34 inches seat-to-pedal shifts too much weight to bars on medium frame;
perhaps should have ordered large, but distance from seat to bars is OK.
Replacing 30.5 inch bar with narrower riser handlebar.
Prefer combination shifter/brake levers and ergonometric lock on grips,
but otherwise nicely equipped for this price.

Comments about Mongoose Argus Sport Fat Bike:

I have had this bike for about a week and have about 100 miles on it so far. I have ridden it on gravel roads, trails, and on tarmac. I have been giddy riding it and look forward to being able to ride it in the snow.

I would definitely recommend the bike. It

Positives: The price was great. I bought it during a 25% off sale. It was easy for me to put together on my own (except for the disc brakes). The bike looks amazing. Many have told me it looks like a tank because of the cool color and how rugged it looks. It has handled some deep gravel well, even with some higher tire pressures. There are holes to install a rear rack also. The bike was lighter than I was expecting. With a bottle rack, a heavier seat, and my garmin mount, the bike came in at 36lbs.

Neutrals: The groupset is what you would expect for the price. The shifts are not the greatest. Very hard and loud... But what you would expect for this price range. The disc brakes have taken some time to get adjusted to where they are not rubbing all the time. Still need some more adjusting (but I need excuses to work on my bikes). The seat is not too comfortable, so you may want to upgrade it before you ride it far.

Negatives: There were a few negatives for me on this bike when it arrived, none of which were a big deal to me... First, one of the spokes on my rear rim was bent. Second, there are cheap clips that hold the outer cables onto the bike. A few of them fell off the first time I took the bike onto rough terrain. I had to zip tie the outer cables up. Third, the tires on the bike I received were NOT the 26" x 4.5" Kenda Juggernauts that are advertised on the website. They are 4.0" Juggernauts... Fourth, there is only one bottle cage holder although the pictures on the website make it look like there is another place to put a cage on the seat tube (maybe this is because I bought the 'small' model?).
