Mongoose Ruddy Comp 27.5+ Mountain Bike
The Mongoose Ruddy Comp is a value-packed example of the 27.5+ standard that delivers a voluminous, plush ride akin to a fat bike that's much more nimble and agile since the tires and wheels are not a full-on fat bike width and weight. The Ruddy Comp sports an aluminum hardtail frame that's paired with a SR Suntour Radion 27.5+ suspension fork with 120mm of travel to smooth out the roughest of terrain. Furthermore, the suspension fork utilizes a remote lock-out so it's a simple endeavor to switch the suspension on and off as necessary to fully adapt to the terrain at hand. The 2x10-speed drivetrain features Shimano Deore components to ensure shifting is precise and reliable while Promax hydraulic brakes with 180mm rotors front and rear ensure there's superb stopping power. The wheels feature thru-axles front and rear for optimal stiffness and handling while the 27.5" x 2.8" WTB TrailBlazer tires use a fast centerline for drag-free speed and square side blocks to hang onto off camber trail and steeps. The wheels are also tubeless to properly benefit from the enhanced volume.

Comments about Mongoose Ruddy Comp 27.5+ Mountain Bike:

Two years ago I purchased the Diamondback Comp from Nashbar and I have been very happy with the bike. It is a hardtail and offers a decent groupset, but does not have the comfort of full suspension. I had been contemplating buying a full suspension bike to help out with some of the more technical riding conditions and make the ride a bit more comfortable. In the past few years I have seen the trend toward fat, mid fat / plus bikes and saw that Nashbar was offering the Mongoose Ruddy 27.5 Plus. After much research I bought it.

Upon receiving the well packaged bike one week after ordering I was amazed at the weight. It is a plus bike but weighs in at about 30 pounds without pedals. The frame is made in Taiwan, the shifters are Shimano Deore (pictures shows Altus) cranks are FSA not Shimano, but are comparable to Shimano Deore. The shifter cables are routed internally. The plus rims are generic but are though axle with cartridge bearings. Good luck finding plus bike wheelsets with tubless tires for under $400.00! Bike looks great and the graphic art is very nice especially the head tube badge.

My first ride on the Ruddy was a place that is mainly flat with some small rollers. It had rained the day before and the trails were very muddy. This bike handled the mud like a dream, no wasted pedal strokes. I was able to stand during the slippery climbs and the rear wheel had fantastic grip. A more nimble ride than I had expected and much more comfortable than a standard hardtail thanks to those plus tires and a surprisingly nice 120 mm Suntour air shock.

Sadly Mongoose has a reputation of making low end big box bikes that are cheap... because it is true! This however is not a cheap big box store bike. It is well built with components that are found on bikes at a much higher price point. The Ruddy is fun to ride, goes over everything in its path and handles mud with ease. Get one before they are gone!

Comments about Mongoose Ruddy Comp 27.5+ Mountain Bike:

I was very pleased upon opening the box. Took about 30 minutes to build the bike. You must have some basic bike building ability to finish assembly and get the bike in tip top order. The wheels are true. The derailleurs needed some adjustment. Also, the brakes being disc will require a break in period before the pads wear in and you get your optimum stopping power. The bike has very nice components for the money. The Raidon fork is smooth all the way through the travel. Shifters have a very positive feel and engagement (once adjusted properly). The bike is a little heavy but im sure it could be lightened up easily if you are a weight conscious person. Geometry is good and allows great climbing and really easy steering. The bars are very wide and allow a lot of leverage on the bars. Coming from a full suspension bike I was pleased at how much the 27.5+ tires soaked up bumps on the rear. All and all this is a great value for the money and I would not hesitate to buy another or recommend to a friend. I received the bike only 3 days after ordering. Two thumbs up to Nashbar !!

Comments about Mongoose Ruddy Comp 27.5+ Mountain Bike:

Ordered Friday and it arrived following Friday. Quick service but it felt like a year wait! Rear derailleur hanger bent in shipping but easy to fix. Headset bearing tension needed to be loosened. Normal bike setup stuff that I consider as part of bonding process. You can bypass the local bike shop, but not their function.
Awesome gold paintjob. Tires have fantastic grip. Very happy with Radion Fork. Got Strava PR's first ride. Nothing wrong with the Promax brakes. Performance and "feel" is similar to Fuse I demoed. Weight approx. 30 pounds.
Only negative is the pedal height on 27.5 is lower than 29er. Roots and rocks that were not an issue will throw you over the handlebar in a heartbeat. Good chance you'll be going faster with the new bike when you crash! I'm going to put on my big boy pants and learn to pay attention to where my feet are. Already love the bike. An extra bonus it that the sale price is better than used bikes I've been looking at. Nothing like a new bike!

Comments about Mongoose Ruddy Comp 27.5+ Mountain Bike:

I'm pretty happy with the bike, overall. It's lightweight, pedals easily, comfortable seat. I have not yet taken it on any trails, but riding on local roads, it has been pleasant.

I am not impressed with the manuals provided. They go on to explain both cantilevered and side pull brakes but don't mention anything about disk breaks!???!!! The front shock manual describes two different lock outs, but again, not the one that came installed and the online support for the shock is limited. The bike also came with the gears way out of tune and it took a while getting them in.

All that being said, the thing I am most upset with is how it was packaged! The bike was shipped in a regular cardboard box, with minimal packing and TONS of room for the bike to move and bang around during shipment. Actually, when the box was delivered, the tops box flaps were wide open for all to see. The address label was from Connecticut, not even a Nashbar warehouse? (another bike vendor?)

            I expected more

Comments about Mongoose Ruddy Comp 27.5+ Mountain Bike:

So far I have taken it out on the trail 5 times (about 2 hrs long/ride) and I absolutely love the bike. It is so much fun. I know I wanted and plus bike. Initially I looked at two bikes: the Diamondback Mason Trail plus and Mongoose Rudy Comp+ as both have nearly identical geometry. In the end, I pick Rudy Comp as it was cheaper and the wheels that came with it has a wider rim than the Mason Trail. Cornering on those wide rims with tires at low pressure (I'm light weight) is fantastic. It climbs surprisingly really well. Root and Rock garden - No problems. The only 2 things I changed out on the bike were saddle and pedals. Keep in mind I'm just an average Joe weekend warrior rider.
