Nashbar AL1 Sora Road Bike
The Nashbar AL1 Sora Road Bike is a value leader that's even better for 2017. Quite simply, you won't find a better spec'd entry into the world of road riding. There's an aluminum frame that's light, strong, and built to last while up front the carbon fiber fork ensures the bike handles like a charm out on the open road. Shimano's new Sora R3000 components at the shifters, derailleurs, and cassette provide impressively smooth, precise gear changes and the compact gearing - with 50/34T chainrings and a 12-25T cassette - means you'll be equipped to climb serious grades and still have plenty of top-end for speedy sections of tarmac. Dual pivot brakes ensure plenty of stopping power while the Schwalbe Lugano tires help keep things rolling along smoothly.
  • Lightweight aluminum frame features sculpted, ovalized top tube and down tube
  • Carbon fiber fork with tapered aluminum steerer tube ensures responsive handling
  • New Shimano Sora R3000 shift levers and derailleurs ensure smooth, precise gear changes
  • Compact 50/34T chainrings and 9-speed 12-25T cassette provides a wide range of gears
  • Sturdy alloy wheelset stands up to regular riding and rough roads
  • Dual-pivot brakes deliver reliable stopping power
  • 700x25 Schwalbe Lugano tires are smooth-rolling, reliable performers

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Sora Road Bike:

So far the bike is great! I'd say about 200 miles on it so far and I love it. The negative review is for the horrible customer service (Especially a lady named Sierra). The bike showed up with damage and looked as though it was probably that way before it was shipped (bicycle tire marks all over the damaged box). After multiple calls and different people giving me different stories I received a second bike, damaged! After more calls and more stories from multiple people they sent replacement wheels. Third times a charm right? Close, the last set of wheels i received were slightly bent but at least close enough that the bike shop could true them for me.

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Sora Road Bike:

This is overall a good bike; the value-for-money factor in particular is off the chart.

But if I'm being very harsh, these are the negatives:

    1) Average frame. This is not a heavy frame but the only modern (aluminium) technique it utilises is tapering. We're not expecting say Specialized or Canyon level engineering; but I've seen butted/double/triple frames for around this price.

    2) Toe-clip pedals. Really? No one has used these in the last 20yrs. I'd rather Nashbar reduce the price of the bike by £2.00 rather than include these. It's akin to buying a nice new laptop that comes with a floppy drive; very strange. Buy-to-throw-away.

    3) Heavy crankset. Claris cranks retail for £25; even Sora is very economical. I suspect either would be much lighter than this. Don't understand why Nashbar has to scrimp to this extent.

    4) Assembly. BB and shell amongst others are bone-dry. Very little, if any grease is used in the assembly. This causes severe problems down the line for people who are unaware / less careful with these things.

Notes: The generic BB (Pro-wheel) rides smoothly; not too different from a high level Shimano. Attractive bike; first time I rode it, some random kid yelled "cool bike"; true story.

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Sora Road Bike:

Just bought this bike. Although there were no specifications of weight, it was lighter than I expected (around 23 lbs?). For the price, I think it's vastly better than the other options out there (I just switched over from a $300 fixie). The bike is smooth at high speeds and is easy to accelerate.
As a disclaimer, have only had the bike for a few weeks, so I cannot comment on the durability. If you are serious about biking this probably isn't the bike for you, but it's a good option for a beginner road cyclist or commuter.

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Sora Road Bike:

I've put over 300 miles on the bike; mostly 10-15 mile training routes with hills, and a few 30+ mile rides. The bike is a solid performer: climbs easily with great gear choices available, descends well and handles great even on the rough pavement. The saddle will give some people grief; I find it just right for making wattage--softer saddle absorbs a lot of output energy, and won't give the feel for good handling in spirited riding. This isn't a lightweight bike, but most riders could lose a few pounds themselves and go faster. An added bonus is the Schwalbe Lugano 25C tires: these provide excellent ride quality and puncture resistance while still rolling fast. There simply isn't a better bike available anywhere for the price!

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Sora Road Bike:

The Sora 3000 groupset makes this a great buy. I was leaning back and forth between the Sora and 105. I decided on this Sora strictly on budgetary reasons, but I was not let down. I have ridden a Trek with a 105 setup for a while now, and I was waiting to feel a performance difference with the new bike, but have not been left wanting. Obviously if you race you will not be looking at Sora level components, but this is an unbelievable value for people looking to get into cycling or enjoy it as a hobby. This bike is fast, pretty light, and looks as nice as anything with higher level components. If you want good performance and value, this is perfect.

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Sora Road Bike:

Bought the Sora Al1 with a 30% off coupon which made it a great deal. The bike came well packaged and took less than an hour to assemble including adjusting the cables and brakes. Not much adjustment was needed for either of these, BTW. Going through the bike during assembly, I did not find anything misassembled and all was well. I like the matte (satin) pearl white paint and the black/white color scheme is tasteful. The white bar wrap will likely be replaced with black (at some point) just because it shows dirt.

I am 5'10" tall, 150 lbs (give or take) and the 56CM bike fits me well. The stock stem is 110mm long and I did replace it to shorten the reach. An 80mm stem with 7-degrees of rise did the trick and the bike is quite comfortable. I did also replace the seat. The seat that ships with it is good quality and looks nice but for my frame, its just too flat.

I've put about 100 miles in the 3-days of ownership and I really like the bike. The Sora components work well together, the Tektro rim brakes do a good job of stopping me and the whole thing feels high-quality.

Downsides? I'm not a fan of the grey decals on the downtube. They just feel a bit 1980's to me. But otherwise, I find no fault with the bike.

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Sora Road Bike:

This is a very nice bike for the price. Sora is a bargain. The brakes (non-Sora) are just ok, and the front one came bent on mine (no shipping damage was evident), but Nashbar quickly sent a good one. The front derailleur in particular was quite out of whack and needed to be mounted lower and have quite a few adjustments. Be prepared to fully "install" the derailleurs since they appear to be mounted with minimal adjustment. The rear wheel needed truing out of the box but Nashbar nicely will pay for that to be done locally. Overall, it took a week of waiting for parts, truing, and tuning to get it running, but I am very happy with it. If you are not prepared to do a little work, you may not should not get a mail order bike. It is nice looking to boot. Nashbar cannot be beat.

Comments about Nashbar AL1 Sora Road Bike:

I decided I'd spring for the Sora as my entry into road biking. My wife and I have been doing self-sustained tours for years on heavy, steel steeds, loaded with gear and panniers, and never getting a daily average over 11 mph.
The Sora was just what I needed. Putting it together out of the box was fairly simple, despite the fact that I broke off the front derailleur barrel adjuster in the process. (But that's nothing that an in-line barrel adjuster couldn't fix) I IMMEDIATELY changed the saddle for something a little more "quality" (a Bontrager Montrose Comp), put some Shimano SPD pedals on, indexed the shifting and off I went. I'll tell ya, after grinding around on a touring bike all these years the Sora felt like I was riding a beam of light. I know that the price point for the Sora may make some more seasoned riders scoff, but you can't beat having a Shimano Sora groupset (one step below the Tiagra) and the wheel build was surprisingly quality for what you're shelling out.
I particularly like that there is no discernible branding on the frame, so you can tell your weight-weenie roadie friends that it's a little known Italian build that costs more than a BMW.
All in all, I was very impressed with the quality of the components for the cost. You could spend around $1000 on a Trek and get almost exactly what you're getting with the Sora. Just go ride and enjoy!
