Access to the main compartment is quick and easy via a zippered front panel. Inside there are mesh organizational pockets, a document sleeve, and separate laptop and tablet sleeves to keep your devices safe. Outside, you'll find zippered side pockets and a front panel slash pocket complete with a key clip to keep keys handy and secure. Comments about Osprey Radial 34 Commuter Pack:

I used a Chrome District rolltop for four seasons and it was time to retire it from commuting duty. Nashbar had the Osprey on sale and I bit. I've used it for a few weeks and can share my insights

The ethos is a place for everything and everything in its place. I initially found it overwhelming but it works very well. There's a laptop compartment, a large compartment for clothes and shoes, a smaller compartment I use for bike tools and tubes and my lunch, and yet a smaller one that I keep an eyeglass case, gloves, etc. There are zippered compartments on the side -- I can now get my keys without taking the bag off, yay! There's organizers in the two larger compartments. The tl;dr version is the bag is well-organized and has ample space.

My commute ranges between 7.5 and 8.5 miles each way depending on errands and the bag is comfortable. The ventilating back panel seems to work well.

Two neat features: a kickstand to keep the bag vertical by itself, and a retention system for the helmet.

Now, for the downside. It gets its capacity via depth. In other words, prepare to be a bull in a china shop, particularly with the helmet strapped on the back. I continually hit door jambs wheeling the bike through. The rolltop got its volume through height, arcing well above my shoulders. I'm pretty sure the Osprey won't fit under an airline seat and have saved the rolltop for that job.

I wouldn't bank on longevity. The zippers aren't robust and I expect them to fail before the fabric. I also expect to get the response "normal wear-and-tear" from the mfr if I ever inquire. Should be good for a few years and I'll feel I got my money's worth.

I'm not sure about water resistance as I haven't had a good test. I've never owned a truly waterproof bag and I'm not expecting this one to be.

Finally, I downloaded a manual from Osprey's web site. The Radial 34 manual differs slightly from what Nashbar sells. Nashbar's could be older, a special edition, etc.

Comments about Osprey Radial 34 Commuter Pack:

Note--I bought this on deep discount sale, would never have even considered it at full price.

I'm a year round all-weather commuter, and tend to go through backpacks every couple of years, mainly because I tend to use cheap ones. This is definitely not in that class. I've also got a fairly expensive one that's more general purpose, larger volume and "waterproof" that set me back about $80, and this is arguably equal to or better than that.

I've only been using it for a few weeks, so can't comment on durability, though have seen other reviews expressing some concern about this. My impression is that it's pretty darned tough, so I expect it will last unless I toss in a laptop with sharp corners or something.

The pack can hold a pretty good volume such as a laptop, tablet, papers, maybe a couple books or lunch. I doubt there's enough room for change of clothes and definitely not for shoes. When loaded with weight, it's still very comfortable, doesn't push sharply against my back, so is great for even longer commutes. I haven't had a chance to try it on a hot day so can't verify how well ventilated it is. It's got some offsets so in theory is ventilated, but it's still going to allow some sweat to penetrate into the pack.

Take the "waterproof" claim with a dose of skepticism--more like "water resistant". There's a cover stashed underneath the pack which is easy to pull out and deploy if you're caught off guard, but if it's raining long enough, the cover will get soaked and water will seep through. Also, note that while the cover is high vis, it also covers the light loop so you'd basically not be able to have a pack-mounted taillight in the rain.

Overall, though, I really like this pack for its great features. There are a gazillion different pockets and pouches for every imaginable purpose. There's a U-lock pouch with a clip. There's an elastic strap for hanging a helmet. There are small reflective stripes.

This is a solid upgrade to my commuting kit.
