2013 Kestrel RT-1000 SL Road Bike
Delivering speed, comfort, plus shifting precision without peer courtesy of Shimano Ultegra Di2, with the 2013 edition of the Kestrel RT-1000 SL you really can have it all.

Every Kestrel design is proprietary and engineered from scratch in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The result is a Kestrel carbon frame that is executed with a high degree of engineering mastery. The RT-1000 SL is made from a special 800k high modulus carbon fiber. While the Kestrel 700k material is incredibly stiff, the 800k carbon is 30% more stiff, and allows Kestrel to use 20% less material in the production of the frame. The BB30 press fit bottom bracket and tapered head tube further optimize the amount of frame stiffness.

The Kestrel RT-1000 SL features an FSA SL-K Carbon 52/36T mid-compact crankset plus the renowned Shimano Ultegra Di2 electronic 2x10-speed drivetrain. Changing gears has never been so easy, effortless, and fast than with the Ultegra Di2 electronic set-up. Ultegra Di2 features an automatic trimming front derailleur, so you never have to hear the sound of chain rub again. The shifters act with digital push button shifting and are ergonomically shaped for optimal comfort and control. The rear derailleur is immune to rough circumstances and protected from impact damage by its reinforced inner cage. The battery, at the heart of the drivetrain and tucked away on the top of the down tube near the bottom bracket, uses lithium ion technology and guarantees a range of 1,250 miles, or almost half the length of the Tour de France, before it needs to be recharged, which takes just 90 minutes. The FSA SL-K Carbon mid-compact crankset is impressively stiff and its 52/36T chainrings, when combined with the Shimao 105 11-28T cassette, ensure you'll have a range of gearing to tackle any terrain.

The Oval Concepts W535 alloy wheels have a semi-wind cheating 35mm rim profile without being a burden in crosswinds. These wheels, outfitted with Vittoria Zaffiro Pro Slick tires for low rolling resistance, are perfect all-arounders suitable for training and competition. Rock solid Oval Concepts components are also spec'd at the handlebar and stem, while an aero Kestrel seatpost completes this high-performance build.

    After 20 years with my Trek 5020, it was time for a new bike. Yes, a few of those years I was barely riding while my kids were young. While bike researching, I happened on a Kestrel RT 1000 SL, with Campy Athena electric shift at another shop. I liked the bike, and wanted electric shifting, if possible. They didn't have my size. I hadn't considered a Kestrel, but did not have the budget for some of the other well known brands. I ordered my bike, hoping the size would work, after doing my own measurements. I had a custom fit, and we put a shorter stem on, and that was it. The Di2 shifting is fantastic! The bike is fairly light, at a bit under 18 lbs. I did upgrade the wheels to HED 5's, and gave my 16 year old myOval 535 wheels, as an upgrade to his new Fuji. Oh, and I transferred my Sella SMP Extra saddle too. I ride lots of 30 mile rides, in hills, flats. I was getting a creak, thought to be a bottom bracket, but it somehow went away just before having the BB taken out, and repressed with Locktite. We removed some stem spacers as well, to lower my ride position, and the fit feels great as the season progresses, and I get stronger. We did a century recently, and I had no fit problems. Not sure why there are so many 2013 bikes left, but at the discounted price, the bike became a terrific value. The mid-compact crank is better for my riding style, than a compact. As an older rider (62), the RT1000 SL is a great balance between speed and comfort. It is stiff over bad roads, like any frame without some kind of shock design, like a Specialized Roubaix, or Trek Domane. I like the 25 tires too. Overall, a great road bike at a good price point.
