    Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed Kit:

I installed this on an old hard tail Mountain bike i have owned since 1995 with a single speed chain and 32 tooth front crank. I use the 16 tooth sprocket in the rear and 26X1.95 tires and can cruise about 15+/-mph on the street. Perfect setup for some basic hard packed trails.

***My only advice would be to adjust it almost parallel with the bottom tube on your bike frame with tension pushing down, not out as the instruction would state or else the chain will skin on hard pedaling if the rear sprocket isn't making enough contact with the chain***

      Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed Kit:

I needed to convert a CX rig for SSCX and chose this unit for its versatility. It did not disappoint.

I've done this sort of thing before so I didn't bother to read the directions. Based on the number of complaints, I've got a few suggestions:
      * The spacers are a little unusual. The thin ones aren't 1/2 the thickness of the wide ones, so there's a good chance you'll have to play around with spacers to get a good chainline. By "good", I mean "as exact as possible".
      * The chain tensioner probably needs more tension than you think. Loosen the tensioner from the dropout, then use a 15mm cone wrench to rotate the tensioner to make the chain pretty tight. Seriously, you want to feel just the slightest bit of resistance when you backpedal. Then tighten it down.
      * That 11-speed or single-speed chain won't work. Seriously, man. Stop it. Get a 9-speed chain and you're set.
      * The sprockets that come with the set will likely gouge your freehub. That's just physics. A wider aluminum one will not and is a great investment.

        Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed Kit:

The spacers work great and lined up my chain perfectly. The chain tensioner, on the other hand, simply works. I had the chain come off a few times in the beginning but after I made a few adjustments and put locktight on the bolts it has worked fine.

          Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed Kit:

The tensioner is totally crooked and useless. The wheel is not straight, so the chain jumps and grinds horribly. Impossible to set up properly. If you want to pay way too much for gears and spacers, get this, but don't expect to use the tensioner.

I put this on my son's 24 inch wheeled mtb as he doesn't do so well shifting on hills etc... Easy to install and have had no trouble with it but I can see some reviewers points on adjusting the chainline to the outer edge (fixed wheelset). It may not hold up... But for my son's bike it works as it should and I am planning on buying again for my own roadie conversion.

Installed on my old Trek racing bike built into a commuter. I have several miles on it now and am very satisfied. Will tell over time how durable it is, so it may eventually earn five stars, but so far it has been perfect for my commuter build.

                  Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed Kit:

Due to spacing, I needed to but a little tension on the chain to convert to a road frame to a single speed. I am running a track wheelset, so the cog is set in a ways. The mechanism sits out quite a ways, in part due to the spring, so the pulley arm was about maxed out. When putting any sort of torch on the drive train, the chain would slip. I tried several different things to get it to work properly, different chains and chain lengths. Finally scrapped it. I recently put it on another frame, with the same drive train, and had the same problem. So I removed the spring and put the pulley in a fixed position, and now it's working fine. It also moved the mechanism several millimeters closer to the drive train, which helps too.

the tensioner is pretty useless, pretty loose fitting. Just not really a good idea to begin with. The spacers and cogs make it worth the price though

                    Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed Kit:

The arm of singulator type part had WAY TO MUCH play allowing pully to go off axis with cogs from even light tension alone. Nor positive, looked used to me as well. Pass on this Nashbar part and get the real deal from Surly would be my advise after wasting [$] and change with shipping, and that was the sale price.Sorry to be so crass, but simply the truth from where I wrench...

                        Comments about Nashbar Single-Speed Kit:

First of all I waited 19 days to receive this order because Nashbar uses FedEx Smart Post Which is basically USPS's slowest shipping method. They use the FedEx name to fool you because a FedEx driver will physicall drive the package accross the country. Make no mistake, the item will be delivered by USPS. Had Nashbar used USPS flat rate mailing i would have received the item in 4-6 days and shipping cost on a 1.9 ld package would have been $5.95 instead on $8.99.As for the item itself. I already have it repackage and waiting to be sent back to nashbar. The pully mechanism/chain rings do not work together. THe pully cuide cage rubs the chain and make a god awful noise no matter how you try to adjust it. The single speed chain i purchased in the same order, would not work along with an Ultegra 8 and 9 speed chain. Even made a special trip to [@]for a cheapo chain to troubleshoot. I have build over 20 bikes from scratch in the last 10 years and never have i encounter such a worthless part. Save yourself time and move and avoid this part as well as Nashbar if they continue to use FedEx Smartpost.
