Nashbar Scratch Pedals
These bike pedals are perfect for cruisin' around town, hittin' the greenway or just burning a few calories on the trainer while you catch up on your TV drama. They've got the modern advantages of sealed bearings and lighter, more durable materials, but they still have that classic vintage look, so they won't kill the theme of your old-school road bike.
  • Toe-clip compatible
  • Hand polished aluminum body
  • Anodized aluminum cage
  • CNC-machined chromoly spindle for durability
  • LSL bushing and sealed bearing deliver smooth operation
  • 8mm hex fitting for installation to help prevent over-tightening
  • Platform area: 60mm x 60mm

Small but have advantages

By Abe

from Carmel, Indiana

About Me Avid Cyclist

Pros

  • Good With Toe Clips
  • Lightweight
  • Not Too Tight

Cons

  • Small

Best Uses

  • Road Biking

Comments about Nashbar Scratch Pedals:

Look closely at pictures - these clips offer very good clearance between the inside of your feet and the cranks, which is just what I needed. They install easily - use a hex key and insert through the opening in the opposite side of each crank arm and tighten, and it's as easy as pie. One reviewer noted that leather straps on insides tend to slip out of the inner tang - sadly that is true. I think it's because of the increased clearance from the platform and that inner tang and the crank arms themselves.

Better than some reviewers think

By Abe

from Carmel Indiana

About Me Avid Cyclist

Pros

  • Good Looking
  • Lightweight
  • Well-spaced

Cons

  • Mediocre Fit And Finish
  • Tight

Best Uses

  • Road Biking

Comments about Nashbar Scratch Pedals:

Some reviewers don't necessarily know how these mount properly. You do not use a pedal wrench, and you do not need a pipe wrench to remove, as one person lamented. You insert a hex key at the inner end of the axle (first sticking it through opening in the crank) and easily tighten or loosen the pedal itself. Also, people have complained that these literally come apart in time - I haven't had them long enough to suffer that indignity, but there is a separate hex key adjustment where you can tighten the fit! Lastly, someone complained that the toe clip strap can come out from the tang - that is true of lots of old school pedals, frankly; these pedals my be slightly more prone to the issue because the pedal design keeps the entire platform further away from the cranks (it's often the cranks that help keep the straps in place, intentionally or not). But the great advantage of these pedals is that the platform is indeed about 1/2 inch farther from the crank, so that while pedaling the inside of your shoe does not rub the crank! A major advantage. Fit and finish are not great on these pedals if you look closely so ... don't look closely.

Lightweight, not meant for high miles, serious road cycling

By Cyclist for Life

from Woodstock, IL

About Me Avid Cyclist

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Minimalistic

Cons

  • Lightweight Construction
  • Small Platform Area
  • Wears Out Quickly

Best Uses

  • Running Errands

Comments about Nashbar Scratch Pedals:

I am a bike commuter. I occasionally go for long rides with hill climbing, requiring me to stand on the pedals. I weigh about 210#. My bike is a steel framed road bike. After three months, 1,100 miles of use of these pedals, the left pedal was making a ratcheting noise and then slipped off of the spindle. Seems to be a recurring issue.

Excellent road pedals, a bargan

    Comments about Nashbar Scratch Pedals:

Nowadays, bike salesmen insist push clipless pedals on the consumer, but some of us like to actually use our bicycle as something other than an overpriced workout machine. EVEN WHEN I DID USE MY BIKE SOLELY FOR A DAILY WORKOUT, I STILL RODE IT TO THE POOL AND TO THE RUNNING TRACK...this is a well made, inexpensive and very light weight, sealed (Magnesium?) pedal and I can wear my running shoes when I take a ride to the grocery store. The reasoning behind needing to wear $150 shoes that don't fit and a $200 pedal better isn't a sales commission I will ever see.

      Comments about Nashbar Scratch Pedals:

needed some pedals for my trainer and for my wife's bike. these fit the bill. they are specific to a side. one side is flat and the other side is for straps. so that is a bit of a hassle. but they are lightweight and bearings appear to be good.

Barely made it through one winter. Started making a clicking noise that gradually became worse then fell right off the shaft. Bearings and everything went everywhere and there was no way to repair them at all.

Product is extremely hard to remove as there are no grips for the pedal wrench. Looks great- and functional-but almost a permanent fixture. Had to use a plumbing wrench to get them off once on.

I've had a pair of scratch pedals on my touring bike for the last 6 or 7 years. Many miles, no problems.

I've also got a pair on my road bike and after 5 years have developed a "click"

For the money you can't beat 'em.
