Nashbar Rear Touring Panniers
When you start outfitting your bike to carry your stuff for touring, it's important to get the right panniers for the job. The Nashbar Rear Touring Pannier has it all. It has huge capacity including a 17-liter main compartment and one 1.5-liter side zip pockets. A drawstring closure on top cinches over your cargo and the large overlapping lid is lined with EDF making it totally waterproof. The entire bag is made with 600 denier nylon, so it's tough, light, and it's also EDF backed so it's highly water resistant (rain or road spray ain't getting in). The Rear Touring Pannier also features alarge side pocket for phone, tools, wallet, etc., and has a tail light hanger on the side pocket.
  • 600 denier nylon is scuff, tear, rip, and puncture resistant--in a big way
  • EDF backing keeps rain or sweat on the outside
  • EPU Backing on lid will keep out driving rain
  • Easy rack mounting takes about 1 minute
  • Drawstring/clip closure adds security and weatherproofing
  • 18.5 total liters of storage capacity each
  • Reflective Logos for added safety
  • Sold as a pair

This was for our tandem which travels on the back of the RV so it will be used more for shopping trips to the store than touring.

Comments about Nashbar Rear Touring Panniers:

The bungee cords work well but setting the hook on the bottom of the rack takes a few seconds and sometimes a second hand.

    Good value.

Extra pockets are the right size for extras.

Comments about Nashbar Rear Touring Panniers:

I have written about these panniers before but Bike Nashbar didn't publish it because I gave it a low score which it deserves. The size and light weight of the bags are great and the material is water proof and reasonilbly durable. The big down side is if you carry any weight in the pack such as a gallon jug of milk it causes the pack to flex into the spokes forcing you to stop to fix the problem. Any pot holes or road roughness will cause this. Also when riding over a rough surface with a load the pack hanging hooks unbend and come off the rack as the metal they are made of is too thin. If this pack were to go into the spoke while descending a hill at high speed it would be a dangerous situation and may result in serious injury. The only purpose I could recommend these Panniers for is a light weight voluminous load over short distances on smooth roads; not for bike touring! The last time I used this pack I had a rechargeable 18V Dewalt drill in the pack and after hitting a rough patch of road it jammed into the spokes and pulled out one of the pack hangers which has no backing washer! These packs are poorly designed and have not been thoroughly tested! I plan on returning mine as soon as I can find my reciept

Comments about Nashbar Rear Touring Panniers:

I bought these panniers before my 1,118 mile Pacific Coast tour, and they held up splendidly. I was concerned that I was perhaps cheaping out on an important part of my touring outfit, but these panniers far exceeded my expectations. They held up great in all sorts of weather, even heavy rain (though I would recommend getting a few rain covers for extra protection!) and held all of my stuff easily. The extra pockets were great to divvy up smaller items, and the side pockets even held 1-liter Nalgene bottles. I also use them for regular cycle commuting, and find the spacious interiors great for regular trips to the grocery store. I can fit 40+ lbs. of groceries within these bags!

Really enjoyed these, I've had packs/panniers before, but never this sturdy and easy to take on/off. I commute to work, so I have to bring a full change of clothes and tools, etc, and use only one of these if you need, excellent mounting design.

Comments about Nashbar Rear Touring Panniers:

I just started using these panniers after retiring a set of 20+ year-old Nashbar rear panniers. I'm finding you can pack a ton of goods into them. I like both the rear and top pockets. The light holder is very useful. And I like the attachment hardware: Very simple, easy to put on and take off. Looking forward to many miles and years of use with these guys.

Comments about Nashbar Rear Touring Panniers:

I got these on sale at an incredible price to replace my beat up and smaller commuter panniers. I first bought a set of discount Nashbar panniers in 1991 and used them to tour Indonesia, Cambodia and New Zealand. That pair was made of lightweight material that I thought would give out on me but proved remarkably resilient. This new pair seems to be made out of the same magic stuff. I don't buy waterproof panniers because they are typically heavy, use a lot of material and space for the rolled up closure system, and usually lack external pockets or any pockets. Instead if it is raining I just pack things in plastic shopping bags. These are large bags but cut and shaped to provide adequate heel clearance (size 12 shoes) on my CX/commuter. They might have clearance issues on a small mountain bike frame. I like that their horizontal width is modest relative to vertical depth = lots of room for stuff but not ridiculously un-aerodynamic. This narrow profile also means you can use just one bag without seriously messing up your balance and handling. My one complaint is that the bottom attachment is the classic hook and bungie. This is fine for a modestly loaded bag on smooth roads, but if you are ripping along and hit a bump, they can eject. This has NOT happened to me yet, but I have seen it happen to friends with that system. On the other hand, I appreciate the easy on/ easy off aspect of this method and it works for my purposes.
