Nashbar Waterproof Rear Panniers
Showing up at the end of your commute or touring day only to find soggy sandwiches, cellphones, clothes, and shoes is the bummer of all bummers. Avoid this cycling fiasco with Nashbar's Waterproof Rear Panniers. They are made with rugged 400 denier nylon which is scuff, puncture, and tear resistant, and treated with EPU coating on the inside which seals the deal--literally. A roll-top closure makes it impossible for water to work its way in...you pretty much have to throw these panniers in a river to get your stuff wet. With a whopping 31 liters of capacity, you can hit the road for months with these panniers.

For the ultimate all-weather touring capacity, we recommend pairing these with Nashbar's Front Waterproof Panniers which are a smaller version of this item.

  • Durable 400 denier outer material w/EPU coating is ultra tough and totally waterproof
  • Folding "roll-top" closure keeps rain out completely
  • 31 liters of storage each carries quite a load
  • Mounts easily to racks
  • Reflective Logos on side and rear
  • Sold as a pair

Comments about Nashbar Waterproof Rear Panniers:

I waited until my 1600 mile camping trip was over to evaluate this set of panniers. All in all, they performed satisfactorily, holding a great quantity of gear, and keeping the rain out. The down side of being completely waterproof is that anything damp that is put into the bag will make the interior humid, and everything gets damp. putting such items in their own dry sacks is best. The method of attachment, using a bungee cord becomes unreliable when the bag is heavily loaded, and mine bounced off several times. Part of the problem is that the top hooks are not adjustable, and may not engage the rack well. They also need to be bent more closed, which is easy to do. The bungee cord may begin to stretch over time, but so far it only is a problem if the bag's very heavily loaded.
More reliable attachment methods are found on the big name bags, but for the price, these are a good buy. They contributed to a successful trip.

Comments about Nashbar Waterproof Rear Panniers:

I use these bags on my daily commute. Because of the way the bags attach to the rack they can fall off going over bumps.

I have only lost a bag once, but as it slid down the street it wore a hole in the bag. So next time it rains the bag wont be waterproof.

However, the bags are cheap, and there are two of them, so I will take the one without a hole if rain is expected.

Comments about Nashbar Waterproof Rear Panniers:

I purchased these for light touring and transporting groceries in town. So far they seem to be well constructed. The rack hooks and how they are attached to the bag are fairly light weight and according to other reviewers could be reinforced. They have held up well for the limited use I have given them. They are fairly long so with size 9.5 shoes have some heal strike issues My chain stays and rack are not very long so others may not have this issue.

Comments about Nashbar Waterproof Rear Panniers:

Wish there was some short of small pocket for wallet or keys or something on the inside with a zipper. These do work very well, however if you hit a good bump or drop off a curb the hook part on the top can come off your bike rack. Maybe a longer piece would help? Otherwise these have been working great for everyday commuting. Been in the pouring rain and now water has gotten in.

Comments about Nashbar Waterproof Rear Panniers:

The capacity of each pannier is over 1900 cu. in., or about 1.1 cu. ft., which is enormous. Fully loaded with groceries, I had 40 lbs stuffed into them. That spared me from pulling a bike trailer.

Each pannier is a single large compartment, so if I want to keep a few things separate, I put them in compartments in a daypack and dump the daypack in a pannier. But it might be nice to have a couple smaller compartments in these panniers.

Comments about Nashbar Waterproof Rear Panniers:

They held up a small 700 mile tour over mostly gravel roads and through some major downpours.

I had to do a lot of preventative maintenance, putting in washers on all the bolts plus using lock-tight on the threads prior to the tour their nuts all came apart exposing the bolts. After the tour it's disturbing to see how much wear the bungie cord attachments are showing. Touring accessories really need to come with some extra parts in case of failure on tour. if shirts come with extra buttons panniers should come with an extra bungie and bolts.

I hate black bags not only do they cook any food you place in them, they are hard to see down into and offer no safety for being seen by distracted drivers, bright yellow or green would be my preferred choice.

The strap going over the center was much too short. Loaded but not over stuffed it was a pain getting the strap to meet together - absolutely stupid length!

I would only recommend these if you are only occasionally going to use them. I doubt they will last with continued use. The fact that you HAVE to do all that preventive maintenance, they are black and poor roll together design it might of been better spending the extra money on a better bag(?) Again they did work fine on a short tour and for their price they are acceptable just not a product I would brag about.

Only for Rides with No Bumps

Comments about Nashbar Waterproof Rear Panniers:

Took the product on a dirt/gravel towpath and about 30 miles into a 185 mile ride things went south. The panniers kept popping off of my rack causing me to stop every 10 or 15 miles to adjust them, re-attach and correct the bent hooks. Eventually the hooks become totally unusable and I had to end the ride to get rid of the panniers. Definitely spend the extra money to get better bags that don't wear out on a relatively flat surface so quickly or ride only on smooth roads.
