Replaced bottom bolts with longer ones added a spacer and wing nuts. Now it is a great portable stand for long trips. Works good for cleaning and lubing chain.

Does as described. I liked it so much I have one holding up my two road bikes, my fiancee's road bike, my 29er hard tail, my 26er beast of burden, my fiancee's hybrid, and my fixie. Not much else to say about it, it's a simple concept and it works great for the price, especially if you get it on sale. Some of the spokes come close to the hooks, but none actually hit so you can do maintenance on it too. bonus.

Comments about Nashbar Stand By Me:

This stand is perfect for my uses. I can easily adjust my derailleurs, albeit while I'm sitting on a low seat or kneeling. I use it everyday to park my bike after my ride. The only issue is with the hooks that hold the bike. I had to bend them inwards so that they would not hit my spokes when moving the wheels. It took about 2 minutes to bend them so well worth the money!

Comments about Nashbar Stand By Me:

First off, the thing works. It raises the back wheel off the ground and enables one to do rudimentary repairs and maintenance with ease. That being said, the tube metal is soft and you need to be careful if you need to modify it. I wasn't paying attention and overtightened a bolt right into the soft metal tube. Turned out I didn't need that setting, so not a big problem. Next the hook was pinging the spokes slightly, so I hammered it to bend it in. I neglected to take the hook out of the metal tube first, so it bent slightly and doesn't quite stand straight anymore. It still works OK, but you can now easily avoid these mistakes by being smarter than me. A low bar, so I still recommend it if you want something simple and cheap.

Comments about Nashbar Stand By Me:

Wish I had one of these years ago!!! No more holding up bike with one arm while trying to turn cranks, and adjust derailleur limit screws with the other. Great stand for cyclists like myself who have limited space (and budget) to do all basic maintenance, repairs and adjustments on modern, lightweight, road bikes in their apartment.

This isn't the stand you're going to use for high torque applications like installing bottom bracket, cranks, and pedals; but then you don't really need a stand for those anyway; it's easy enough to just lean bike against something when installing/removing those parts. For building up the rest of the bike however; tasks like installing and adjusting handlebars, brakes, cables, derailleurs and shifters and getting everything perfectly dialed this thing is a lifesaver for less than $20!

I was also pleasantly surprised at the sturdy construction and packaging, doesn't feel cheap at all. I added some $2.00 5/8" rubber leg tips from the hardware store to the support base legs, which help to stabilize the stand further; especially on hardwood floors.

As far as mounting problems other reviewers mentioned, I can confirm both of my size large, sub-19 lb. road bikes fit great and are really sturdy in stand once I initially set up placement of hook brackets.

Also works great as a display stand!
