Great starter tool set. I will have to pick up a few older freewheel tools, but other than that, it's pretty complete. Love the grips.

This kit is not fancy and I would not expect it to hold up to regular use. Some of the wrenches are pretty cheap, but the majority of the tools are performing well. Used for the last couple weeks. The case makes it easy to take to the trailhead for minor adjustments or emergencies.

Comments about Nashbar Essential Tool Kit:

Toolkit covers 95% of what the typical rider will come across. I think I've used over 70% of the tools in the kit for the various bikes and components I have. The only gripes I have are the chain whip broke on the first use. I used the chain break tool and opened up a new link to connect the chain to the handle. Solved. Also, the crank extractor tool nearly stripped out the threads on the crank. The flat "push" piece that pushes off the cartridge bottom bracket is too wide and was catching supports on the crank arms. That piece does pop off but it is not very intuitive. I wish it also came with an 8mm allen wrench for the Shimano line of pedals, but luckily I had that in socket for in my toolbox.

Comments about Nashbar Essential Tool Kit:

I am not saying that you don't need your local bike shop.....(tuning a high end bike is something that I am willing to pay for) .but there are a lot of times when I need something fixed so I can ride it the next day or a neighbor kids department store Bike (that isn't worth bringing in to have fixed) needs something done.

I have owned this kit for about a year now and I have used far more an I thought...... I do a search on You Tube and more times than not, I can figure out how to make the repair or adjustment.

I didn't even know what half of the tools were for when I bought it, but at this point, I have used almost everything in the kit.

Hard to beat this kit for the money.....nice job with this product Nashbar.

Better than expected, better than average toolkit for what you pay. Used it to refurb a 70's Peugeot classic 10 speed that I'll eventually strip down to a single speed. Added new bottom bracket, cranks, chain, handle bars-bull horns; I detest drop-downs. No hate to the purists, just have my own preferences. Running wider tires on the 27" rims as well. Skinnies are fast but I wanted a little more meat on the wheels. Runs great. Couldn't have done it without this kit. Recommend it if your an enthusiast who likes to tinker or if your ride needs a basic tune up. If I were doing a full rebuild, I'd be sending the more technical stuff to my local bike shop. Great kit. Thanks Nashbar!

Comments about Nashbar Essential Tool Kit:

This toolkit has most of the commonly used tools for maintaining the mechanicals of your cycle. I have used the cone wrenches to rebuild wheel hubs, the bottom bracket tool for removal / installation, the crank puller, tire levers, spoke wrench, cassette removal tool with chain tool, and even rebuilt some cheap pedals with the pedal servicing tool. The non-speciality tools haven't been touched (hex wrenches, screwdriver, torx wrenches) but could be useful to those who don't already own basic tools for around the house.
I would like to see a freewheel removal tool (bought one separately), but you can't have everything, I suppose. The only tool that might need to be replaced due to wear and tear would be the cone wrenches. They are a heavy stamped steel, and would be more durable if they were cast. All in all, this is a great starter kit.
