Comments about Shimano PD-R540 SPD-SL Road Pedals:

Great pedal at this price point. I was replacing an old set of mountain bike pedals I was using on my road bike. These are lighter, sleeker and feel better under my feet but take some effort to get clipped into. I think it will just take time to get used to, but it's a bit frustrating. In hindsight, I would have looked for a two-sided pair which would help in getting clipped in.

Comments about Shimano PD-R540 SPD-SL Road Pedals:

I've only been out about 3 times since I replaced my pedals. This is my first set of pedals that are clipped in with the shoes. The tension adjust was easy and I was able to fine tune my pedals in a few minutes. Very smooth ride with zero issues so far.

If you are looking for some basic road pedals that work great but you arent concerned with saving every possible gram look no further. Great deal if you are getting your first pair, you can always upgrade later but if you are going to wait for them to wear out first its going to take a while.

Installed these on my Nashbar AL4 Road Bike and found them easy to adjust to and use. Light and functional. No adjustments necessary, but they can be adjusted which is a nice feature. These pedals are a good value. I ride about 75-100 miles a week and find them more than adequate.

Comments about Shimano PD-R540 SPD-SL Road Pedals:

I was looking for new shoes, and decided that I would switch from Shimano SPD pedals to road pedals at the same time. I do a combo of commuting and highway riding (for exercise and to the cottage) so road pedals seemed like a better fit.

I just had my first long-ish (~1 hr, 33km) ride on them. I noticed a difference right away from the SPDs I was using. A lot more power is going into each stroke, giving me a few extra Kms on the odo. Anyone thinking of transitioning to road pedals, I would do it, and these are a great place to start at such a reasonable price.

I didn't have to tension problem that some others have mentioned--in fact, I increased the tension on both feet, (tension is set at the lowest out of the box) about 5 clicks on the left and 3 or 4 on the right.

Only reason that I gave this 4 and not 5 stars is that I['m sure other, more expensive pedals are probably "better" in the sense of being lighter or better bearings, or whatever. But, as my first set of road pedals, I'm very happy with these so far. 10/10, will pedal again.

Comments about Shimano PD-R540 SPD-SL Road Pedals:

These pedals are just amazing value for the money. I often commute to work so having an easy clip in/out is vitally important in busy areas and these pedals really deliver. They also have great power transfer and feel solid and stable even under heavy pedaling. I was a little concerned at the price being so low, but the quality and usability is great. I really don't see any downside to these pedals.

I ride about 100 miles a week. When my look cleats needed to be replaced I decided to switch over to the shimano pedals to match the rest of my components. I love it. A lot easier to clip in and out of than my old looks. Just as secure as the look pedals when sprinting and climbing.

Why pay more for a pedal, these things do all a pedal needs to do. The weight is similar to much more expensive pedals, and the white looks sweet on my white road bike. I've been riding hard for 20 years and I just can't see any reason to go with anything else. I have them on 3 of my bikes now and need another pair of cleats for a new pair of shoes, the price for this pedal is the same as the cleats alone. Guess I'll be buying 1 more pair.

Comments about Shimano PD-R540 SPD-SL Road Pedals:

I am new to road biking, I was a pretty avid Mountain Biker years ago. My wife and I just started getting ready for our first Tri and I wanted to use clipless. These pedals fit the bill. Easy to install and they do everything I could ask. The clip-in is solid but I find it pretty easy to get out when I need to. I guess if a few grams could make a difference in my times, I could spend a bunch more money but these are great.
If you are looking for a reasonable price on a good solid pedal, these should be your pedals.
