Comments about Nashbar Argyle Single-Speed Bike:

I bought this is a knockaround vehicle for local transportation in a flat suburb, and it will be OK for that. The frame build and finish are good for the price, and the wheels are solid quality, while the other components are serviceable -- all told, certainly a cut above a department store bike. I don't think I will keep it long though, or spend another cent, but if I were planning to keep it I would add a front caliper brake ASAP. Braking performance with the coaster hub is weak so you have to plan well ahead to stop if you are going over 15mph, a particular problem going downhill. Going uphill is not too mellow either; the gearing is fine for the flat but this is not a town bike where there is real terrain.

Product very easy to assemble. Great for cruising to store, mom's house, bank but also great for a quick 20 / 30 mile ride. Might want to add lube to bottom bracket, and hubs but other than that this baby is ready 30 minutes after UPS drops it off. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a fixie at a super cost.

Comments about Nashbar Argyle Single-Speed Bike:

Had my doubts, but the bike met and in some ways even exceeded my expectations. It's become my daily go-to bike for my one-hour fitness cruise (retired, no more commuting) on rolling terrain, for which the the 42x16 (70") ratio is perfect. Chainring looks a bit cheesy, but it's steel and thus will last almost forever. Coaster brake squealed on braking for the first few miles, but works perfectly now. Replaced the handlebar with a Porteur-style bar for comfort because the knuckles-up mountain bike hand position is uncomfortable for me. Unexpected bonus: this bike is extremely stable when riding no-hands. And since I have a coaster brake, I can scrub speed if I need to while using the phone or taking off a jacket. Don't recommend this, just works for me. Still getting used to the blue tires (old dude here), but my wife likes them and says "don't you dare take them off!"

Definitely repack front and rear bearings. The bike is shipped with minimal bearing grease. Once done, no strange noises from the hubs and confidence that I will get good use out of the wheels.

Also replaced the seat. A long ride convinced me to do it. That was a personal preference but I got a good seat on sale from Nashbar, so my overall cost in the bike is still low.

I should be good to go for a long time.

          Enjoy it.

Comments about Nashbar Argyle Single-Speed Bike:

This is a decent bike for the money. I needed a single speed to knock around on.
Did a bit of research, read many reviews, even lucky enough to view similar bikes in the bike racks around town and settled on this ride. Glad I did.
The Fixie/Single speed purists will pooh pooh this bike. And they can after spending many bucks on their build ups.
So out of the box this bike is easy to DIY assemble or take to your favorite bike mechanic. I recommend a mechanic highly.
I would not DIY assemble unless you have some basic experience with bike repairs. No special tools needed. The manual is not helpful for assembly or much of anything.
---I did read on an earlier review that the wheel bearings needed more grease. I took mine apart and found this to be true. The coaster brake rear wheel is funky if you have never torn into one.
Once I did though, with some more bearing grease, it was much improved. Tell your assembly guy to do it for you. They might be a bit squeamish but only because most factory bikes are shipped with more than the barest minimum to get by.
Enjoy this low cost good value ride.

Comments about Nashbar Argyle Single-Speed Bike:

I love this bike. I looked at other budget single speeds and this was the best value. Its the wheel set that makes it. I did replace the stem, handlebar, seat post combo. But that was not at all needed, just fashion.

I would like to suggest to buyers that they take a minute to learn to repack the grease in the coaster brake hub. Hubs are nearly always shipped with to little grease. The coaster hub needs alot more than it was shipped with. If you are unhappy with the coaster brake, repack it with grease and try again. Same with the front hub. The coaster brake hub is a little tricky, but once you got it, its easy.

I like this bike so much I will likely buy another and save it for when yet another dirt bag steals yet another one of my bikes. At this price it doesn't hurt so bad.

Comments about Nashbar Argyle Single-Speed Bike:

Bought it a couple of months ago, and ridden at least 7 city miles per day. Coaster brake assembly is now scraping something when I pedal. Cute blue tire also wore out fast. Replaced it with a michelin City tire from my old junked deathtrap. Too bad - my wife liked the blue one. In short, it was cheap, and I was hoping to maximize quality by minimizing complexity. Brake still works, so maybe I succeeded? So far has cost me $100/month. If it makes a year I guess I'm sort of happy. Conversely, the Mongoose it replaced lasted 18 years.

Comments about Nashbar Argyle Single-Speed Bike:

I just got back into biking around. It's been, oh, 20 years. So my rear hurts a little bit, as do my hands, from taking this bike out on the city roads. That'll go away with time.

I find I can maneuver at speeds that keep me with the flow of traffic easily. Acceleration from red lights and stop signs is also very good. I think this is geared for maximum enjoyment and utility. The pedals have great traction so my shoes don't slip off at all. I also find that the riding position is quite comfortable. I'm 69" tall and got the 54cm frame. Kudos all around!

The only negative thus far was the instruction manual! Don't even try reading the instructions that come with this thing. They don't appear to be for this bike. I don't know what went wrong there.

Comments about Nashbar Argyle Single-Speed Bike:

As I was ordering my spring shipment of tires and tubes I kept on looking at this bike. I looked so clean and simple. Perfect for my commuting needs. It was easy to put together. If you have basic knownledge and tools. The is no water bosses or rack mounts. I took an old fashioned water cage and attachted it with hose clamps. It also does not have a kickstand. That is one reason why it is light. Taped the top bar with electricle tape as if you live without a kickstand you can lean it against things without worrying about scratches. Also taped part of the downtube so the cable lock will not scratch the frame. It also adds a low profile look to the bike. Taking away that shiny new look. As I have to leave it parked outside of my work for up to twelve hours a day. I leave a u lock at work to lock it up there. Only have a cable on the bike to park it if I have to stop along the way. The rims are true and still are. The stock tires handle pavement, grass and some mud. Getting used to the coaster brake was not that hard. You just have to leave yourself in a position to brake. Left or right. The brake is not that powerful. So you have to leave yourself some room. At this juncture this is the funnist bike in my stable. The gear ratio is also good. However if you have a headwind you cannot bail out to a lower gear. Just stand up like you used to as a kid.
