Comments about Nashbar Flat Bar Road Bike:

Bought this for my townie/local rail trails... enjoyed it so much I added rack and pedals and traveled to Cumberland Md. Great ride... I can see a few components will get upgraded as they wear, but a great performing bike overall. Assembly was about an hour, all is well, just ordered a 2nd for wife.

Comments about Nashbar Flat Bar Road Bike:

Despite a full page about pedal installation and numerous other pamphlets w/ unimportant documentation there are no printed assembly instructions. It took several customer service interactions before anyone would admit this. Just open the box and go straight to youtube.

Comments about Nashbar Flat Bar Road Bike:

Ok, no more changing shoes, shorts, shirt... I put it together, clamped the leg of my jeans, grabbed a helmet and went for a test ride...20 miles of smiles. I think I'm going to ride this to DC next spring... 500 miles from Akron. Upgrades will occur naturally, but this is a good solid value... commute, coffee, grocery runs, simple, inexpensive, "runabout"...

I'm riding a few times a week for 30 min each ride. Replaced the seat and gears could be a little more smooth. Handlebar is comfortable. Bike is light and easy to assemble. Color is nice. Exactly what I was looking for and arrived quick. Will buy from nashbar again.

Comments about Nashbar Flat Bar Road Bike:

I was very enthusiastic about receiving, building and riding this bike.

The reviews on this site (perhaps not surprisingly) are top notch. The price is right. The value seemed unsurpassed. I was absolutely positively anticipating receiving this bike.

          Unboxing.
The bike is very well packaged and protected. The shipping box is very stiff, protected by a large number of staples AND the top of the box is glued shut as well.

There is abundant paper and foam protection for all of the frame tubes. All of the components are likewise, well protected: cranks, handlebars, stem and wheels. Protective tabs are included to protect the wheels and to keep them upright within the box instead of just rattling around.

There was very minimal damage, from what I could tell. Only the bottom of the seatpost showed any significant scratching. Otherwise the bike appears to be near perfect cosmetically after shipment.

          Frame and Esthetics:
The paint is generally very nice. It is not perfect. There are a few minor lumps and uneven spots in the paint. Keep in mind this is a sub $300 bike so, some minor imperfections are hardly a major issue.

Weld quality is generally good; the only noticeable departure from an ideal stack of dimes look is at the rear dropouts: the welds look quite sloppy there.

          Components:
The 8 speed Shimano Acera is shifting perfectly. Both the front and rear shifting are spot on. The shift quality is really quite stellar: astonishingly good for the price, and impressive at any price. This is "on the stand" shifting, but I expect shifting to be excellent on actual rides based on what I'm seeing so far. No adjustment was required here.

The V brakes and brake levers are unbranded. The stopping quality seems to be pretty darn good. Having said that, the build quality and tolerances are pretty embarrassing. The right rear lever has an internal pulley and it is rubbing on the inside of the casing.

The front left brake lever works properly, but the front v brake cannot be adjusted properly, i.e., centered.

The stem is also of sketchy quality. It required multiple attempts to get the stem adjusted properly. However, it does have a 4 bolt design--a nice touch at this price.

One very nice touch, which I did not expect at this price point, are the ergonomic grips.

          Wheels:
The rim walls are machined, and make for a nice braking surface. The tires measure at exactly 28 mm, exactly as listed. They seem pretty grippy as well.

The major problem is how out of true they are. Both wheels are both vertically and laterally out of true. I haven't gotten around to truing them yet. While I don't expect the truing to take very long (at least not laterally), the extent to which they are out of true, and the lack of vertical true, is disappointing.

Another problem: I slide the front reflector upward to adjust the position and it literally broke in half with just a bit of movement.

Overall, I expect this bike to be an excellent value. Unfortunately, there are just too many components which are of questionable quality. Adjustment is a bit of a bear, and the amount of work required to get everything working properly is far higher than I had expected.

I expect to call nashbar to see if some of I can adjust some of these components properly, but I am not optimistic about the brakes or headset.

If you are used to building up or adjusting nicer bikes with nicer components, this bike could really test your patience. If you are willing to invest significantly more time to building and adjusting a lower quality and lower priced bike and are willing to trade off time for price, then you should consider this bike.

          Overall:
If I had to do it all over again, I would have simply handed this bike over to a pro mechanic and not bothered attempting this build myself. I think I learned quite a bit about bikes in building up an inexpensive bike but it was much tougher getting this bike to perform properly than I could have anticipated.

Comments about Nashbar Flat Bar Road Bike:

I changed the stem & bars before ever riding it, had upgrades laying around.
Seat was next to be replaced, tried the stock one & it had to go, but I figured I'd give it a chance 1st. Tires & brakes will be changed out later, as will various things as wear & tear take place. Bike is still good for the price.
I got this to kinda cross train for mtb races, when the trails were too muddy to ride, I could still ride road.
I wanted something more like an mtb, both in weight & riding stance. I didn't want to spend big bucks for a roadie, just needed a part time trainer bike to put some miles in, do hill repeats, & just get a workout on.
This bike has some base components, but once dialed in they get it done.
It fits my needs just fine, especially @ the price I got it for.
Get one, just be realistic with what ya get for the money.
